POLICY UPDATES
| Second Part of CA DREAM Act Awaits Brown's Signature
With Governor Jerry Brown's signature by October 9th, undocumented students in California will be eligible for state financial aid. Brown signed the first portion, AB 130, into law in July 2011 allowing undocumented students access to private grants and scholarships, and Senate and Assembly approval of AB 131 in August and September meant students could potentially be able to access public education funding. Bill Simplifying CA Financial Aid (AB 91) Headed to Governor's Desk A legislative measure aimed at simplifying the financial aid process for college kids, which former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed last fall, is headed to the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown. AB 91 would reduce the number of forms students have to fill out to access finanial aid. Currently, students apply for a Board of Governors waiver or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or both. Portantino's bill creates a three-year pilot program at 10 community college campuses where FAFSA would be used as the primary financial aid application. Policy Action Alert! - Call Governor Brown Today SoCal CAN member, Campaign for College Opportunity, has put out a call to all Californians to contact Gov. Jerry Brown regarding five measures of legislation that are all promising efforts to support college opportunity and preparation in California. Click here to read their call to action, and to learn more about the five bills that have made it to the Governor's desk for signing.
