SOCAL CAN PROGRAMS    
CREWS Program - Deadline Extended to May 18th!
Last year, SoCal CAN's CREWS Program (College Retention Excels With Students) connected 60 students from ten member organizations in an effort to equip them with the tools, resources, and support networks needed to succeed in college. The program builds on the leadership capacities of our students to serve as peer-mentors as they chart their journey through college. Select students are chosen to serve as a "Crew Leader", an empowering role that will earn them a $500 - $1000 scholarship! Students can complete the application from our website at www.socalcollegeaccess.org.

SoCal CAN Membership Meeting

National College Access Network (NCAN) Leadership Briefing

Join NCAN in Washington, DC to add your voice to NCAN's advocacy efforts. USC Leadership Summit - Mirrors of Excellence: Windows of Opportunity

CAPE Network's Universal Encouragement Program
The Universal Encouragement Program (UEP) is a customizable online guidance assessment, reporting, communications, and evaluation system designed to help counselors and other education support professionals document and respond to students' career and education needs, interests, and experiences. ESI offers the UEP at no cost to schools and education support programs and provides low-cost data tools that enable states, districts, and other groups to view data across multiple schools or programs.

ConnectEd Studios
ConnectEd Studios is an online platform that connects students and teachers with Industry Professionals, and that supports project-based learning in the classroom. The goal is to encourage schools to "power up" and tap into the digital literacy and engagement of today's high school students.

California Assembly Approves Dream Act Bill
College students who entered the country illegally appear closer than ever to receiving financial aid in California.On a party-line vote of 51-21, the state Assembly approved a bill Thursday that allows those students to collect privately funded college scholarships.

A State-by-State Look at Obama's Big Goal for Higher Ed
In February 2009, President Barack Obama set a goal of the U.S. having the highest proportion of college graduates aged 25-34 in the world by the year 2020. Holders of both associate and baccalaureate degrees count. Last month, the U.S. Department of Education broke down how many graduates each state would need to contribute for the nation to reach Obama's goal.

SCHOLARSHIPS

HSF/ Verizon Wireless Tu Mandas Scholarship
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Verizon Wireless have partnered to provide financial resources to assist outstanding graduating high school students who have participated in Verizon Wireless' Tu Mandas workshops at their high schools. The award amount is $2,000. The deadline is May 25, 2011.

Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) Scholarship
Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) is giving away two $1,000 awards to high school seniors. Applicants must submit five copies of a video explaining what the United States flag means to them, as well as a statement of your future plans. The deadline is June 1, 2011.

Asian Pacific Community Fund - High School Seniors
The Asian Pacific Community Fund partners with Verizon to financially assist students in their pursuit of higher education as they face the challenge of significantly rising costs of obtaining a college degree. These awards support those who excel academically, are leaders amongst their peers and are making a positive impact in their communities. The deadline is June 30, 2011.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
GRADD - Making Graduate School a Reality for Undocumented Students
Graduates Reaching A Dream Deferred (GRADD) is an organization founded by undocumented graduate students which aims to address the needs of immigrant students interested in pursuing graduate education. GRADD works to establish a national network of students, faculty members, and community leaders dedicated to bringing resources and attention to this underserved student population. Through the creation of an inclusive and safe environment, GRADD intends to reassure students that their academic and professional goals are achievable.

4th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference
May 30, 2011, 8:00 - 5:00 PM, UCLA Ackerman Ballroom
The AB540 Project component of IDEAS at UCLA educates undocumented students in surrounding communities about the possibility of reaching higher education. The AB540 Project hosts the annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference to instill resilience in undocumented youth. The message is one of hope for undocumented youth in education: the CA Dream Act presents the opportunity to alleviate our financial struggles in light of rising tuition costs. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
100 Best Communities for Young People
The 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING is an annual competition, now in its fifth cycle, that rewards and recognizes communities making extraordinary efforts to reduce dropout rates and provide outstanding services and supports to their youth. These communities, while not without their own challenges to overcome, have demonstrated a significant and lasting commitment to their youth for which they deserve to be recognized and commended. NEFE Financial Literacy Grant
The National Endowment for Financial Education, a nonprofit, national foundation wholly dedicated to improving the financial well-being of all Americans, has announced guidelines for its 2011 grant program. The NEFE grants program seeks to fund innovative research and research- based development projects that can make a profound contribution to the field of financial literacy. Inquiries are encouraged from disciplines in fields as diverse as behavior, economics, neuroscience, sociology, psychology, marketing, finance, education, change theory, decision sciences, and others. Bank of America's Neighborhood Excellence Initiative
The Neighborhood Excellence Initiative is Bank of America's signature philanthropic program which recognizes, nurtures, and rewards community-based organizations, local heroes and student leaders working to improve their communities. They focus on areas such as: education, community development/neighborhood preservation, arts and culture, and health and human services. Click here for more details. The deadline is June 1, 2011.

Nonprofit Innovation Award
The Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation is given each fall to three U.S.-based nonprofit organizations in recognition of existing programs that have made a difference in the lives of the people they serve. GEAR UP West Conference - Call for Proposals
The Call for Proposals for the fifth annual GEAR UP West conference is now available. GEAR UP West is a collaborative event for college access program staff, teachers, counselors, administrators, and TRiO & GEAR UP program staff from the west. This year's event will be October 16 - 18, 2011 in Portland, OR. Click here for more information.

To help NCAN better serve their members, they've created a 5-10 minute survey about their Member Services. Click here to begin. Likewise, FSA is conducting an online survey to determine the effectiveness of their our current communications and student outreach efforts. Development Associate (Part-Time)
Foundation for a College Education - Palo Alto, CA
FCE's mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and surrounding communities who graduate from a four-year college or university. The Development Associate reports to the Director of Development and works with both the Director of Development and the Executive Director on fundraising and outreach activities that support the students, mission, and staff of Foundation for a College Education. The Development Associate works on a variety of activities related to fund development, communications, and special events. The deadline is May 16, 2011.

Summer Teaching Associate
Citizen Schools - Oakland, CA
Citizen Schools seeks talented, enthusiastic, and diverse candidates to serve as part-time Teaching Associates with middle school students in California. Teaching Associates (TA) are essential to the success of the Citizen Schools' program. These engaging, dedicated, and caring adults work closely with urban middle-school students and their families to help transform lives. Each TA leads a group of approximately 12-16 students, supporting their academic achievement through academic support and by facilitating hands-on, learning activities led by community volunteers.

College Access Coordinator
Urban Dove - New York City, NY
Urban Dove seeks a candidate to provide college access services as program model outlines including; counseling, workshops, exam registration, portfolio management, career exploration and tours. He/she will be responsible for student benchmarks, college awareness workshop facilitation, database management, attendance reporting, and more.

Executive Director
EdSource - Mountain View, CA
The Executive Director will be responsible for crafting the appropriate policy strategy as EdSource continues to provide impartial analysis of state educational policy. The Executive Director will work closely with other local, state and national leaders, foundation representatives, policymakers, researchers, educators, and EdSource staff to ensure that the organization produces work that is both intellectually and methodologically rigorous; impartial, honest and transparent; timely, solution-oriented; and effectively communicated. The deadline is May 31, 2011.

College Advisor
KIPP Through College - Oakland, CA
KIPP Bay Area Schools (KBAS) is the nonprofit with a total of 200 employees and annual revenue of $20M that manages the seven KIPP schools serving 2,300 students in 2010 - 2011 in the Bay Area. Their mission is to ensure students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. The College Advisor is a full-time position (1.0 FTE) on the KIPP Through College (KTC) team. The KTC department supports alumni of KBAS middle and high schools to and through college. The College Advisor provides support and counseling to KIPPsters in high school (focusing on high school completion and college matriculation). The deadline is June 1, 2011.
