SOCAL CAN EVENTS | Meeting in the Middle: Engaging Parents & Families in College Access March 25, 2011, 10:00 - 1:00 PM, Magnolia Place Family Center SoCal CAN is proud to present our first professional development session of the year. During this program, participants will hear from Wendy Marshall, Ed.D. 2012 candidate at USC's Rossier School of Education who will share her new research on effective approaches to engaging parents and guardians. The program will also feature several best practices developed by SoCal CAN members as well as the voices of parents and guardians who have become involved in their student's path to and through college. | California Cuts Aid to High-Default Colleges California students won't receive Cal Grants of up to $9,703 a year to enroll at colleges with high loan default and dropout rates under new rules approved by a legislative committee. The change is expected to hit hardest at for-profit college students. More than 20,000 students at for-profit schools were awarded Cal Grants last year. Read More...
State Committee Passes New Version of DREAM Act Though former Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed the California DREAM Act three times, a state assembly committee voted on March 15th to pass a new version of the legislation, which will now be reviewed by another committee before potentially being introduced to the entire Assembly. | Report: Parent and Student Perceptions of Complexity in College Admission The College Board's recent report, Complexity in College Admission: Fact or Urban Myth, documents student and parent perceptions about the process. The findings how that students find the process particularly tasking, and gave large praise to schools that provided any type of college admissions counseling. Interesting, parents found the process less tasking than students. Full Report...
Chart: Student Data Collection Progress Across the US The Data Quality Campaign's sixth annual state analysis, Data for Action 2010, reveals that states have made unprecedented progress collecting longitudinal information that follows individual students over time. Unable to Meet Enrollment Goals, CSU May Have to Return State Funds The California State University system has sufficient funds to admit 30,000 more students this spring than it enrolled last fall - but it will be impossible for the 23-campus system to enroll that many, CSU officials say. In fact CSU may be forced to return funds from Sacramento intended to educate those students. That's because it is failing to meet the target set in the budget act approved by the state Legislature and former Gov. | National Federation of the Blind 2011 Scholarship Program To recognize achievement by blind scholars, the National Federation of the Blind annually offers blind college students in the United States the opportunity to win one of thirty national scholarships worth from $3,000 to $12,000. The deadline is March 31, 2011.
Buick Achievers Scholarship Program The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program wants to reward those who have succeeded both inside and outside of the classroom, who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance. It's a reward for what you've made of yourself, and the difference you are making for others. They're offering up to $25,000/year for 100 first-time freshman, renewable up to four years. The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in STEM fields, with a heavy emphasis on Engineering majors. The deadline is March 31, 2011.
Asian Pacific Community Fund The Asian Pacific Community Fund partners with Verizon to financially assist students in pursuit of higher education as they face the challenge of significantly rising costs of obtaining a college degree. These awards will support those who excel academically, are leaders amongst their peers and are making a positive impact in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. The scholarship awards will only be used to cover the cost of attending an accredited 4 year college/university. This may include tuition, fees, books, supplies, living expenses and meals. The deadline is March 31, 2011.
AARP Women's Scholarship Program The AARP Women's Scholarship Program is about creating chances, fostering opportunities and, ultimately, changing lives. Recipients of these scholarships are diverse and inspirational: A widow finding hope and opportunity through education; a recovering addict achieving her dream of graduating from college; a grandmother raising grandchildren with the hope of achieving a more secure future for her family. The deadline is March 31, 2011.

2011 African-American Youth Leadership Conference - Applications Open!
July 24 - 31, 2011, CSU Sacramento
The African-American Youth Leadership Program (AAYLP), a division of the Research and Policy Institute of California, is seeking applicants for its 2010 African-American Youth Leadership Conference. California high school students eligible to graduate in 2011 or 2012 are invited to apply. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to, from and during the conference site provided at NO COST to the participants! The deadline is April 1, 2011.
Smithsonian Latino Center 2011 Young Ambassadors Program
The Young Ambassadors Program is a national, interdisciplinary leadership development program for high school seniors. The mission of the program is to foster the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources. Selected students will travel to Washington, D.C., for a week-long, leadership development seminar encourages youth to explore and understand Latino identity and embrace their own cultural heritage. On completion of the five-week program, participants will receive a $2,000 program stipend toward their higher education. The deadline is April 8, 2011.
USC's SummerTIME Program - Applications Open!
The Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis at USC has opened their applications to high school seniors interested in attending their 4 week SummerTIME program which provides students with college writing skills and college life workshops. CHCI Congressional Internship
The purpose of the Congressional Internship Program (CIP) is to expose young Latinos to the legislative process and to strengthen their professional and leadership skills, ultimately promoting the presence of Latinos on Capitol Hill. It provides college students with a paid congressional work placement on Capitol Hill for a period of twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (Summer). Students gain work experience, participate in a community service project, and receive educational and professional programming provided by CHCI. Click here for more details and to apply. META Scholarship for Hispanic Youth
META is a non-profit organization providing mentorship and scholarships to Hispanic youth in Southern California. Their goal is to motivate students to pursue higher education and graduate, and to develop support systems through mentoring. META wants to increase the opportunities for Hispanics to become successful business and community leaders. The deadline is April 30, 2011.
