CJPC Mourns the Loss of Board Member, Dr. Jeffrey Elliott
Dedicated Professor, Research & Author Passes

Dr ElliottNorth Carolina's social justice and academic communities will gather to mourn the loss of Carolina Justice Policy Center Board member, Dr. Jeffrey Elliott today.  A dedicated member of CJPC's Board of Directors, Dr. Elliott was the sitting chair of the North Carolina Central University Department of Political Science.

"Dr. Elliott's passing is a great loss to CJPC and to many students and alum of NC Central. His humor and his presence will be missed.  He always pushed the envelope and encouraged so many with his knowledge from his travels and writings," said Charmaine Fuller Cooper, a former student and current CJPC Director.

Dr. Elliott served for over ten years as a CJPC Board member and 28 years as a Political Science Professor at NC Central.  'He has written over 150 books and 550 articles.  He interviewed former President Bill Clinton, Cuban President Fidel Castro, Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley and Nobel Prize Winner Desmond Tutu, among others' according to the News & Observer.

Lao Rubert, CJPC Senior Director of Policy & Special Projects received the prestigious Paul Green Award in 1993 for her work in the death penalty reform movement.

The True Spirit of the Holidays
TROSA Christmas Tree Sales Give Hope & Substance Abuse Treatment

TROSA ChristmasThe vivid colors, lights and scents of the holidays are here again. While shoppers rush to retailers to pick up that must have toy or last minute gift for an office party, it's easy for some seasonal Christmas Tree stands to get lost in the rush.  But, then again, once you have a TROSA Christmas Tree experience, you'll want to buy more trees than you have room to display.

Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers provided residential substance abuse treatment to 732 clients during its last fiscal year. TROSA has been in operation for over 15 years and raises enough funds from annual Christmas Tree sales cover over $200,000 of TROSA program costs according to TROSA Development Director Michelle Kucerak.

So, when you think of buying a tree, garland or wreath this season, remember TROSA.  Long after the needles have fallen and the fresh outdoor scent fades, hope and new life begins for a client seeking to rebuild his/her life while battling addiction.  TROSA also provides treatment to clients through income from other services including catering, moving services, a framing shop and lawn care.  For more information about TROSA services or treatment, call (919) 419-1059.

Encourage members of NC's StreetSafe Task Force to fund TROSA and other alternatives to incarceration and crime prevention alternatives.

Federal 100:1 Crack-Cocaine Disparity Reduction Legislation
Carolina Justice Policy Center Signs on to Letter Asking for NC Senator Kay Hagan's support

The Carolina Justice Policy Center energetically supports the US Senate's Fairness in Sentencing Act of 2009 and recently joined the ACLU of NC amongst many others in sending a letter requesting Senator Kay Hagan's support of the legislation.  This federal legislation, if passed, will end the 100 to 1disparity between crack and powder cocaine for federal drug sentences.  Mandatory drug sentences have been historically controversial and many civil rights and social justice groups have criticized the 100 to 1 ratio for disproportionately affecting minorities, especially Black males. It currently takes one hundred times more powder cocaine than crack cocaine to face federal mandatory sentences equivalent to those currently on federal books for crack cocaine possessions.

A similar bill was introduced during the summer in the US House of Representatives.

Read & Track action on the bills:
Scheduled for Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing - Dec. 17th at 10am
