Increasing Access to Criminal Justice Resources
NC's Criminal Justice Resource Directory for Practitioners, Offenders & Their Families

Coming January 2010

In our role as a statewide criminal justice advocacy nonprofit and information clearinghouse, the Carolina Justice Policy Center has advocated for criminal justice reforms in North Carolina since 1975.  In our 35th year we want to increase access to the resources currently available in the communities.

In January 2010, the Carolina Justice Policy Center will publish 'North Carolina's Criminal Justice Resource Directory for Practitioners, Offenders and their Families' online at www.justicepolicycenter.org.  A limited number of printed copies will also be available by request.

The directory is intended as a compass to help navigate North Carolina's network of community-based corrections programs, alternative programs to incarceration, re-entry programs, legal assistance programs, substance abuse treatment programs and other service programs located throughout North Carolina's 100 counties.

Please take a moment to fill out an information sheet to include your organization in the directory.  Also, please forward this email to partners in your work or organizations that you know who provide these resources throughout the state.  While we intend to build upon the information in this directory each year, we want to be as accurate and inclusive as possible in the first edition.

Click here to download information sheets in Microsoft Word or Adobe pdf format.

Deadline to submit information sheets: Friday, November 20, 2009

StreetSafe Task Force
What works & what doesn't work for Offenders?

The Governor's new Streetsafe task force met for the first time on October 8.   The group was established by NC Governor Beverly Perdue and is tasked with sharing ideas about what works and what doesn't for people returning from prison.  It is expected to meet for one year and then it's expected to turn its ideas over to the Governor and appropriate state agencies.

News 14 Meeting Coverage

Send the Governor and CJPC input on their Facebook pages. List your own ideas about effective strategies for people returning to their communities after a prison sentence.

Legislative Funding Continuation Reviews
Legislators to Review some Offender Programs before Short Legislative Session Begins

The General Assembly has set five continuation reviews that will take place prior to the short session.  Each appropriations committee selected one program for review and interestingly enough, 3 of the 5 reviews have to do with offenders.  They are:

Prisoner's Eduction Program - Community College system - Education Appropriations Committee Sentencing Services - Office of Indigent Defense Services - Justice and Public Safety Appropriations Committee Young Offenders Forest Conservation Program (BRIDGE) - Department of Environment and Natural Resources

Each of these programs must present a report to the Fiscal Research Division by December 1, 2009.  After discussion with Fiscal Research, the final report must be presented to the General Assembly by March 1, 2010.  Although past Continuation Review Reports were submitted to Interim Oversight Committees, the 2010 reports are expected to be presented to the Appropriations committee listed above.
