City of Boulder Residents
City Council Election Season Starts NOW!
Make sure you are an "ACTIVE VOTER"

If you live within the City limits of Boulder, an important election is coming your way this fall.  2011 has been a both a good year and a bad year for mountain biking in Boulder.  We had the incredible success of Valmont Bike Park but also the tremendous disappointment of the West TSA. What do these two events have in common? They both prove that MOUNTAIN BIKERS NEED TO GET POLITICAL!

The BMA Advocacy Team is currently vetting city council candidates and working with other outdoor recreation groups to present a unified slate of candidates that care about our issues, will be there for us when it matters, and will be good for Boulder in general. But WE NEED YOU to make a difference. We need you to make sure you are an active voter - only "active" voters will be mailed a ballot in this mail-ballot-only election.

To make sure you are an "active" voter and to make sure you can help BMA make a difference this election cycle, follow these simple steps:
  1. Go to the Secretary of State Voter Info website; click  here
  2. Select "Update Mail-in Ballot Request
  3. Enter in your name, zip code and birthday
  4. Under "Registration Information" look for "Registration Status." If it says "active" you are good to go. Just check your address and make sure it is correct.
  5. If you are not an "active" voter, click on the button that says "Click here to change your address, party affiliation or permanent mail-in ballot status."
  6. Enter your CO driver's license number and hit the "Submit" button. Update your "Mail-in Ballot Status" to make sure you get a mail in ballot and hit the "Submit Changes" button. Make sure your address is correct while you are at it. This should change your "Registration Status" to "active." Feel free to check.

Want To Do More to Make a Difference?

Get Involved Politically!

Voting is important, but it isn't enough to put a candidate over the top.  We need help with yard signs, literature drops, and campaign contributions.  They all make a difference in the overall outcome of an election.   Contact Mike Barrow , BMA Advocacy Director, if you have the time, energy, or resources to make a difference in this election.

Historically, BMA has not gotten this deeply involved in a Council election.  BMA's Advocacy team believes that this must change.  After the events of the West TSA, we have to admit to a level of naivete'.  We believed that if we played by the rules, acted like good citizens, were mature in our arguments and reasonable in our requests, that ultimately good things would happen. Now we know being good citizens is not necessarily enough. If we want to be listened to, we need to show we can make a real difference in these elections. Contact Mike Barrow to get more involved. Keep an eye out for BMA endorsements in late September.
Anemone Hill Update

On Wednesday August 17, the Open Space Board of Trustees (OSBT) voted 4-1 to allow cycling in the Anenome Hill area, which is part of the West TSA.

That's right; a loop trail minutes from downtown Boulder that could be an excellent  recreation opportunity if designed properly.

Sounds too good to be true, right?  Maybe, maybe not.

This issue was scheduled for City Council consideration today, September 6.  We were ramping up a team of BMA members to show up to endorse the OSBT plan last week when we were informed that the matter has been pushed back until October 26.  OSMP staff asked for the delay as they are working on 'options' that may affect the Anenome Hill decision.  This "could" mean they are working on the possible link to Four Mile Canyon to add to the existing plan... that's if you were an optimist.

OSMP staff has twice had the opportunity to "find a way to say yes" on Anenome Hill, both times they were unable to do so.

We don't know what this means at this time.  We suspect we won't know what to react to until the Council agenda is published less then a week before October 26.

Trails Update

Over the weekend we managed to open 3200' of fabulous new tread and reclaim around 2300' of old tread on Sugar Mag Trail.
We'd like to thank those who came out as well as WRV for their organizational work.
It looks like we'll try for at least one more day of work out there, hopefully in September.
Stay tuned!
