SSV Trail Day

Help Open St. Vrain Trail to Mountain Bikes! Building is this weekend!

We've still got a few volunteer slots open for the joint BMA/WRV St. Vrain Trail Project. If we finish this weekend we'll be opening the South St Vrain Trail from Brainard Lake east to mountain bikes on the first of August. If we don't get it done, the opening may wait a year. We could use 10 more people on Saturday and Sunday, July 31 & August 1. You can sign up for either or both days. Click here to sign up: http://bma-mtb.org/events/?id=180

This is a two day project together with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) to move a portion of the South St. Vrain Trail out of the wilderness area and into a more sustainable alignment. In addition to opening the trail to mountain bikes, this work will also restore the old alignment and protect the riparian corridor from further damage.

You may volunteer for one or two days. Camping facilities and meals will also be available. There's additional project description at the WRV site (www.wlrv.org).

We need a few more BMA volunteers. Sign-up and help out!
Help Name the Trails!!!

Construction at Valmont Bike Park is going full steam. Trails, jumps, and features seem to be appearing over night...it's truly amazing out there! While we can't encourage an actual site visit (safety first, people) peek through the fence the next time you ride by. You won't be disappointed.

Now we need your help-and we're not asking for your money or your sweat this time. We just need your brainpower: Name the Trails!

Please take a few minutes to give us some inspiring ideas for trail names, keeping the integrity of Boulder Parks, VBP's spectacular setting, and our dynamic cycling community in mind. Be creative! These trail names will be emblazoned on VBP signage for years to come. And be quick! We need your feedback by Friday, August 6th.

Imagine how sweet it would be to ride YOUR trail when the gates open at Valmont Bike Park!

If you need inspiration, check out fatcyclists' blog  on trail naming. He's got some good points...

Again, thanks for all your help, enthusiasm, and support throughout the VBP process. We couldn't have come this far without you, and we can't wait to see you on the trails!

Full of great ideas? Take the survey more than once. We won't tell.

Right Time to Write - is Now

Guy Burgess, one of the neighborhood reps to the West TSA CCG, has developed a new and completely open comment site for those living west of Broadway.  You may comment on any issue including Mt. Biking.

The emphasis is on those that live West of Broadway but others can comment as well.  Please write in support of Mt. Bike access and/or express your ideas any compromise solutions.  We need fair minded folks to express their views, share their ideas, and show that our desires for reasonable, fair, and responsible access carries the same weight as the "just say NO crowd".

Here is a link to the main site: West TSA Neighborhood Comments

On the right hand column you can click on the Mountain Biking Overview link, the MTB Supporting Comments link, or the MTB Compromise Ideas link.

Please be sure to include your name and address in the comment.

Volunteers Needed for Adaptive MTB Clinic September 11th

Here's a great way to help share our love of mountain biking with a truly inspiring group. This is the 3rd year BMA has helped the City of Boulder EXPAND Program tow adaptive riders up Marshall Mesa & support them thru tricky sections on the trail.

To register a disabled athlete that would benefit from this free clinic, or to volunteer for a morning or afternoon shift, contact: Colleen Fitzgerald fitzgeraldc@bouldercolorado.gov 303-413-7216.  for more details contact Hersch: hhgoldberg@gmail.com  303.570.9177

Sufferfest!
September 18th

SufferFest is less than two months away! Ride some of Boulder's best singletrack or come help out!

So what is SufferFest you ask? Well, it is BMA's way of rewarding all its members for a great year of trail stewardship and hard work with a big, fully supported ride and campout. The ride starts in Nederland and ends down the way at Beaver Reservoir (after a loop out of Camp Dick, if you dare!). There will be plenty of miles, smiles, and beer at the finish!

If you don't want to ride it, then come out and volunteer to support and
cheer on your fellow BMA members. Contact Mic De Min at micdemin@gmail.com for more information and to volunteer your time.

Big Changes Coming to West Mag

If you've been up to West Mag this summer to beat the heat, you've no doubt noticed the negative effects of the mountain pine beetle on one of our favorite places to ride.

Well, it's going to get worse before it gets better.  The Boulder Ranger District, acknowledging the recreational value of this area and the sweat equity we have invested over the years, is taking steps to minimize the impacts to the trail system.  A fuels reduction project is already in full swing to remove the already dead trees and give the aspens, spruce, and other trees of the forest a chance to take hold and flourish.

But tell the truth, West Mag is going to look VERY different, and there will be changes to the trail alignments and campsites to adjust to those changes.  There will be clear cut areas, there will be areas that are shut down temporarily so that workers can do their job in a relatively safe environment.

Change is always unsettling, but with new trails going in like the ReRoot, we think we can make lemonade out of lemons.

As always, we'll keep you updated!
