Message from the BMA President
To the BMA community, I am Jason Vogel, the newly elected President of the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. I've been involved in BMA for years, doing a little of everything: trail work, SufferFest creator, Bike Patrol director and patroller, service on the BMA Board, advocacy and public policy. More importantly, like yourselves I can't get through life without a mountain bike (or 5) and trails to ride them on.
I want to remind you why you open up and read this newsletter:
- the High Plains Trail, - the Annual Banquet, - Picture Rock, - the Bike Patrol, - Springbrook Loop, - the Wild Turkey Trail, - Valmont Bike Park, - West Magnolia, - Film Nite, - the Little Raven Trail, - SufferFest, - and the list goes on. You are part of the community that has made all of these things happen within the last five years. And there has been untold sweat, blood, and tears shed by hundreds of mountain bikers in the pursuit of this frankly stunning resume.
Which brings us to today. Where does BMA stand and what lies in our future? BMA has never had as much potential as it does today. Our current board of directors is the best I've ever seen. Other volunteers are running projects from website redevelopment, to social rides, to the bike patrol, to leading trail crews, to directing trail work projects. These people have shown more devotion, competence, and drive than any group of people I have ever met in my life. And it has not gone unnoticed. Land managers and politicians alike look at BMA and see the powerful and energetic community that we have become. And I'm happy to report that our friends far outnumber our detractors.
But I'm not yet ready to sit back and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. I have taken on the task of BMA president because I see an organization that has outgrown itself. We need to take everything we do to another level. There are little things that I want to see done during my term - like a new website and more social events. And there are big things that I want to see done during my term - like a fully functioning Valmont Bike Park and trail access for mountain bikes from Baseline Road to Eldorado Springs Drive.
There is much work yet undone. And it will take all of us to get there. I'm not talking about change overnight; I'm talking about a BMA three years from today that is as unrecognizable as the BMA of five years ago. I am putting out a personal call for idea people who are also leaders, who can take on a big or small project that inspires you and see it to completion, all in the name of making BMA the best it can be. If you've ever wondered when was the right time for you to get involved, the answer is now.
Here are some ideas:
- Enhance our relationship with local bike shops and the business community - Improve our social scene - more bikes and more beer - Develop personal relationships with the people that decide on bike access - Join the bike patrol - Become a trail crew leader - Learn enhanced trail construction techniques and help us build technical trails - Plan and manage one of our big fundraisers like FilmNite - Insert your idea here If you want to help BMA reach its potential, email me your phone number and a bit about yourself -jvogel157@gmail.com
Thanks for reading and thanks for your continuing support. |

Mountain Bike Movies!
Over the Bars - FRI 7pm at b-side loungeThe DH Productions' crew has dug deep into their archive and sifted through more than a decade's worth of footage, pulling out the sickest crash clips they could find. You will hear first-hand from the athletes involved as they take you through the details and explain why they push their limits for sake of progression. Sit back as these pros take you through the mashups blow by blow. OTB is filled with all the broken bikes, bones and blood that have made us famous. Click here for a link to view trailer. New World Disorder 10: Dust & Bones - SAT 8pm at Boulder TheaterDust & Bones is the final installment of New World Disorder, the end of an era. Shot in high definition with RED cameras, the film opens with a ridiculous throw down by Darren Berrecloth and then moves on to unbelievable back flip combinations from Greg Watts and the new school styles of Graham Agassiz. Follow the Clump, Stumps and Jumps Tour as they jam the west coast and entertain a Giants baseball game from the Hell Barge in San Francisco Bay. Watch Paul Basagoitia slay his personal playground in Nevada, Gee Atherton "keep it lit" through the forests of Italy and Aaron Chase with Adam Hauck and friends session Highland MTB park in New Hampshire. This film is the culmination of a decade of blood and sweat and represents the state of the art in freeride and slopestyle mountain biking - don't miss it! Click here for a link to view trailer.
