Trail Construction at Betasso
October 17

BMA is excited to once again be partnering with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) and Boulder County Parks and Open Space(BCPOS), this time working at the Benjamin/Betasso property.  There will be two projects going on simultaneously on October 17th.  I encourage any BMA members who would like to increase their skill set to sign up for this one - there will be both restoration work and trail building going on.  This collaboration is key for BMA because next year much of our work in the West Magnolia area will include restoring eroded trails while building cool new trails. The project may be the last project we do this season (Colorado weather - you never know).

If you are interested in learning RESTORATION, please sign up via the WRV website:  www.wlrv.org and make sure you write BMA in the comments section.  Otherwise, please do like you do and get the info on the BMA website.

Crew leaders, we may need you.  Please contact Jenn directly to sign up as crew leader.
West TSA Bike Representative

The mountain biking community turned out in force on September 15th.  During the caucus, the mountain biking community selected Mark McIntyre to represent them during the upcoming year long process.  Mark is looking forward to advocating for fair, reasonable, and responsible access for our community in the West TSA area. Jenifer Kwasniewski will be Mark's alternate in case he is unable to attend any of the CCG meetings.

One of the key tasks of all representatives to the CCG is to communicate with and inform those that they represent.  Initially, Mark has set up a blog so that he can keep all of us informed about the progress of the CCG.  We can post public comments there as well.  Here's the link:
Feel free to post comments and follow the blog.  If a different communication tool is needed, let Mark know and it will be considered.

City Council Endorsements

The Boulder Mountainbike Alliance endorses five candidates for the upcoming Boulder City Council race.

Each elected city council member will be shaping the way our city looks for years to come. At this crucial time, it is more important than ever that we have reasonable, rational people in office. The economic, growth and open space issues that define how our city has operated in the last decades are being challenged by our current economy. These issues will immediately test the new council members and how they deal with what we value in Boulder and access to our public resources.
GO VOTE!

Bikers Behaving Very Well!

The City of Boulder Open Space Department recently completed a study of "On-Trial and Dog Regulation Compliance" of the Spring Brook Loop.  The results of this study show us to be a very well behaved group. We tend to play by the rules almost all the time.

The study had OSMP rangers and staff out on the trail every day for 8 months.  Of 1,466 cycling parties (one or more in a group)OSMP observed only TWO parties were observed off trail.

It is our feeling that the efforts of the Bike Patrol have a great deal to do with this stellar performance. So, our thanks go to our responsible members and our bike patrol.  Give us a trail - and we take care of it.

Vote YES on County 1A

Ballot Issue 1A is an extension of Boulder County's 0.25% open space sales tax.  In the nearly 35 years since inception, Boulder County has purchased tens of thousands of acres of land to preserve agriculture, establish trails and combat sprawl. In 1993, Boulder County voters first approved a 0.25% open space sales tax (25 cents on a $100 purchase). The revenue from the 1993 tax, from now until its expiration in 2019, will go to pay off the bonds that have been sold to finance current acquisitions and projects. Without additional revenue, very few additional open space purchases will be possible.

A yes vote on County Question 1A will extend the existing tax through the year 2034. This is not an additional tax. It is an extension of the existing tax, which will allow the county to issue bonds today, to be paid for with the future tax revenues. This will allow the County to continue to:

* Acquire new properties - many of which are key purchases that will not be available forever.
* Preserve our remaining open lands.
* Fight sprawl by purchasing land to buffer communities.
* Improve agricultural lands to allow for more local food production.
* Build trails to enhance recreational opportunities

BMA supports this measure; we encourage you to vote for it.  We believe Boulder County and our collective lives are better for it.
