St. Patrick's Party to Benefit Valmont Bike Park Hosted by Full Cycle, Kona, and Pabst Blue Ribbon

Come on down, support the Valmont Bike Park, and see the latest and greatest two films - New World Disorder 9: Never Enough and The Best of Earthed. If the movie and great cause isn't enough, there will be a bike trials demo by RipStoke, beer specials from Pabst Blue Ribbon, and a drawing for giveaways including a Kona CoilAir Triple freeride bike, and gear from Fox, Giro, Oakley, Mavic, Bike Magazine, Illegal Pete's, JettMTB and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Tickets are $10 if purchased at Full Cycle, or $12 at bouldertheater.com.

BMA's Most Wanted!

BMA is an entirely volunteer driven organization, which means we don't just want your support - we need it.  Everyone gives back in their own way.  Some people have time, some have money, and some have an amazing ability to whip up cookies for hungry trail work volunteers.  Whether you've been riding since the Repack days or started mountain biking last week, we'd love to for you to make your own mark on BMA.  You might be surprised to learn that by doing what you already love to do, you can help us out in a BIG way on your own time.

Film Night Help Needed Now!

We've spent the past year watching bike videos from the comfort of our couches and staring at glossy pictures of riders doing the impossible from the comfort of our bathrooms.  But, really, nothing beats watching riders defy gravity on the big screen.

BMA is ramping up for our yearly BMA Film Night!  If you'd like to help us choose a flick, come up with creative ideas to make this year's film night even better than the last, or just lend a hand, we'd love for you to join our Film Night committee.  Don't worry, joining the committee doesn't mean you'll be an indentured servant.  Instead, we want your ideas and assistance in whatever capacity you are able to give.

Those interested in joining the committee should contact us asap.  All committee members will receive a BMA shirt (worth millions on eBay) and about a zillion gold stars.  No experience is necessary.

Bike Patrol 2009

Kickoff Party!

Monday March 30th, 2009
6:00pm to 7:30pm
Avery Tasting Room

Come help us celebrate the advent of good riding weather and start the season off right with the Boulder Mountain Bike Patrol (BMBP) Kickoff Party. Join us after work on on Monday March 30th at the Avery Tasting Room for some beverages, finger food, and opportunities for awesome raffle prizes. Party with fellow bike friends
while learning about the Patrol expansion throughout the Forest Service lands (Sourdough and Bluedot Trails) to City lands (North and East Boulder trails) and County lands (Picture Rock) in 2009.

Patrolling is simply the best way to show that mountain bikers are good citizens who deserve good trail access. Want to be able to ride
from town to South Boulder trails? Want more connector trails like the new Picture Rock Trail? Stoked about quality West/East Magnolia singletrack? Join BMBP to maintain access and open up new opportunities through responsible stewardship of the land and community service. You're going to ride these places anyway, why  not call it "volunteer time" too?

If you can't attend but are interested in learning more about joining the patrol, email Bike Patrol Director John Perry.

2009 Training

We're recruiting for the coming season, and have set training dates for this year's new volunteers. We have two sessions this year--you only need to attend one of the sessions to fulfill the training requirement.

Session I - April 8th/9th (two evenings, Wednesday and Thursday--must attend both nights) 5:30pm to 9pm each night but may end early.

Session II - April 18th (Saturday) 9am to 4pm,

More information will be sent out in the next BMA newsletter including links to sign up for a training session. We hope to see everyone at the Kick off Party on March 23rd at Avery.  If you have any questions, please contact Bike Patrol Director John Perry.

BMA Weekly Rides Starting

Daylight savings time has struck again! BMA rides are set to kick off next month. Tentative start dates are:

Tuesday, April 7th - "Newbie Ride" with Jared Berg
Wednesday, April 8th - "Open Ride" with Tom Nasky
Thursday, April 9th - "Girls Only" with Cynthia Ferrer

Girls Only

This year, the ride moves to Thursday, but expect all the same goodness from last year: Friends, a mix of ride locales, gentle coaching from the ride leaders, and of course the 'no drop' format. Most nights have an optional social hour at a local watering hole, so make sure to schedule some extra post ride time. Details on rides are posted at the blog here, and linked to at the side of every newsletter and BMA's website.

Stay tuned for more details on our other social rides!

Mr. Barrow Goes to Washington

On Thursday, March 12, I'll be knocking on doors inside the US Capitol to speak to our elected officials about bikes, trails, and funding for them.  I will not be alone as I am taking part of the National Bike Summit, an IMBA and League of American Bicyclists event that brings together cycling advocates from all over the country.

The Colorado contingent has more people than any other state, from what I've heard.  We'll be talking up the reauthorization of the transportation bill which has almost a half billion dollars in Recreational Trails Program (RTP) money included.  We'll be working it on your behalf, and on behalf of our governmental agencies that provide recreation but because they are governmental agencies, they cannot lobby for themselves.  We have to do it for them.

I'll have a report upon my return.  This should be interesting.

Stimulus Money Comes To West Mag

While gathering info for the Summit about the US Forest Service, Ed Perault, Recreation Supervisor for the Boulder Ranger District, informed me that some of the stimulus money has already trickled down to him.  Projects are being awarded based upon a complex linear programming model that takes into account metrics like # of jobs created, time to complete, safety issues, etc. The top 5% of projects have already been green lighted, most of which are fuel reduction projects but there is a new restroom for West Mag in that 5%.  The next set of projects should get to the top 10% and be approved soon.  The money is moving... and it's good to see the money being spent in places we love.
