Laughter Yoga at YogaSoul!

Laughter Yoga with Della!
Thursdays, beginning September 30th
4:30pm - 5:30pm

Laughter Yoga is a simple, yet powerful practice. Your body knows how to laugh regardless of what your mind has to say. The brain doesn't know if you are happy because you are smiling/laughing or if you are smiling/laughing because you are happy. The is very important, because you do not need to have a sense of humor, know jokes, or even be happy to attend a Laughter Yoga class. Laughter Yoga invites you to fake it until it becomes real.

This class is appropriate for students of all levels of yoga experience and all levels of fitness.

"Laughter Yoga combines laughter with yogic breathing exercises. It is a perfect way to laugh and get exercise at the same time. It approaches laughter as a body exercise so it's easy to laugh even if you're depressed or in a bad mood. I've tried it, and it works." Oprah Winfrey

Quote from Yogiji
1000 Days

"The mind should dance with the body, and the whole universe is your stage.  Try to feel that whatever you are doing is the most beautiful thing, the prettiest dance, because you are dancing with the whole universe.  Don't resent anything.  Let your heart guide you, free of all regimentation."

Yogi Bhajan, the master of Kundalini Yoga, brought the teachings of this ancient sacred science to America in 1969. He taught here for 35 years until his passing in 2004.

Celebrate Equinox in Style

DanceMeditation Worldwide Equinox Event!

Thursday September 23rd, 2010
Time: 7:15pm - 8:30pm

This event is part of a cosmic gathering to observe the Fall Equinox, we will join celebrants worldwide in universal Dancemeditation™, connecting across time and space to welcome the new season. This event is by donation and all are invited.

The premise of Dancemeditation™ is that the body is spiritual intelligence; the body is mind. Key elements include undivided attention, seamless concentration, breath awareness, continuous flow of movement, and compassionate witness of self and others. It can be practiced alone or in community, and addresses the whole person, bridging the divide between knowing and understanding. In a typical session, practitioners shift awareness using breath, music, and slow movement; then let the body move as it wishes, using inward-focused movement to cultivate receptivity, creativity, presence, and healing. Resting with attention to breath allows the quiet inner state and body awareness to linger during the return to normal consciousness. Benefits of Dancemeditation™ include self-sustaining vitality; refined, embodied concentration; a quiet mind; and an awakened heart. Its non-competitive orientation affirms each person's beauty, harmony, and magnificence.

All levels are welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothes to move in and anything else that inspires them. A hip scarf and veil are optional items. There will be a short reception afterwards to ask questions.

Spotlight on QiGong!
By Keith Root

Qigong literally means the "practice of vital energy".  What is this "vital energy" and why should we practice it? The Chinese believe that our vital energy is that "energy" which keeps us alive and call it simply Chi (Qi). If we have Chi we are alive; without Chi we are dead. It is as simple and complex as that. There are many forms of Chi; food chi, air chi, water chi and so on. Qigong focuses on that Chi that is passed down to us from our parents (essence chi). Cultivating that Chi gives us longevity and good health.

Using the traditional Chinese Yin/Yang model we can separate Qigong into two distinct modes. One mode is stillness (Yin) with movement (Yang) being the opposing but integrated duality. There are many types of Qigong but they fall mainly into 4 categories. They include 1) Natural 2) Healing 3) Spiritual and 4) Martial. While there is much overlap between these disciplines there are characteristics that are unique to each. In this introduction we will primarily deal with fundamental Qigong also known as "natural" Qigong.

The yin side of Natural Qigong stresses stillness in either sitting or standing positions. Using comfort as a guide one progresses through different stages of stillness understanding. This type of practice is called Natural Meditation. Natural Qigong meditation involves awareness of your comfort level. When you become uncomfortable  during practice you may revert to an earlier more comfortable level and then after becoming comfortable again you can resume the more strenuous level.

The yang side emphasizes movement. These movements are usually slow-paced and intended to circulate the Chi through the body's meridians unlocking the body's natural healing and balancing systems. Using breath as the guide; movements are coordinated to the breath rather than coordinating your breath to the movement. Again using comfort as your guide you try to remain comfortable (and balanced) while performing the movements. For example you may find that your legs wobble or are unsteady while stepping. Taking shorter steps usually brings the comfort level back to optimal.

These Natural Qigong practices lead to a slow and steady improvement in balance,
mind-body awareness and self-healing.

QiGong is currently offered at YogaSoul on Wednesdays, 6:30am - 7:30am.  See our class schedule for more details and to register!
