There's something about those first few days of fall that turns me into a maniac. It might have been my mother's penchant for Fall Cleaning that I unwittingly inherited- a southern ritual that marked the countdown to....Christmas. When the temp drops just a little bit, the repressive heat finally breaks and we can breathe again, I have this uncontrollable urge to clean my barn. Not my house, mind you, but my barn. I clean the hay loft, knocking down all the wasp nests and cob webs. The tack room gets a thorough going over, everything gets washed, refreshed, polished. The little apt fridge gets cleaned, the tool bucket is rearranged and I categorize all the nails and screws in order by size.
I scrub the purple stains on the center aisle floor and finally get up the remains of that spilled bottle of Thrush Buster. It's sick. One year I rented a power washer; that was a mistake. I power-washed the entire barn and then the horses wouldn't step foot in it- they knew the earth had tilted on its axis. When the barn is sparkling, then I turn my attention to the manor house. I get very sporadic OCD moments of household cleaning, but then I get lazy and I'm cured. Yippee! Fall's a'comin'!

National Public Radio this week featured the Hay Pledge in its series on grass roots projects of neighbor-helping-neighbor, Participation Nation.

August 31, 2012
Hay is for Horses in Tryon, NC
Dedicating hay bales to the emergency food bank for horses.
The Tryon area has been known as "Horse Country" for almost a century. People here take their equine economy seriously, it's a major source of jobs. Drought conditions and the economy have forced many horse owners into a predicament of how to feed their families and their horses.
So the Hay Pledge was born. Horse owners and hay growers "pledge" 10 bales of hay if asked - unless their supplies are too low to share. Calls for assistance are confidential. Some 500 bales have been delivered in 2012, but winter is coming and that number will go up significantly.

German court bans Rolling Stones tattoo on horse
Just when you thought you'd heard it all...
A German court has stopped a man from making a Rolling Stones tattoo on a horse saying it is wrong to inflict pain on animals "without just cause".
Adorning animals with tattoos is banned in Germany, after the man wanted to make a tattoo of the rock group's tongue logo. Thank God an appeal is not possible. So, you can't always get what you want...

"Above the River"
Artist: Larry Wheeler
Having drawn and painted from childhood, Larry Wheeler began his formal art studies with portrait painter Jack Brock, in Atlanta in 1961. Wheeler received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1966 and in 1972 received an MFA from the Institute's Hoffberger School of Painting. Since 1979, a major focus of his work has been the integration of the human figure into the natural landscape, most often with horses as the link unifying the image.
Wheeler's commissioned work continues to be in demand. His portraits hang in the State House in Annapolis, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C., the Federal Building in Baltimore, and in many private collections across the country. He is represented by the Dog and Horse Gallery in Charleston. Visit their website.
