Ivey

This past weekend Cathy Berlin and I went to a three day course for Animal Cruelty Investigators.

It was really good. Animal Control folks and law enforcement types from all over the state were able to compare notes, trade stories and commiserate.  I came home feeling really lucky. Why? I realized how much we have. Our area is lucky that we have an incredible Humane Society and a supportive community that loves (l-o-v-e-s) animals. Other communities would give anything to have the programs in place that we have (Foothills Humane Soc, the equine ambulance, the Hay Pledge, succussful fundraising, dedicated volunteers, Fabulous Fosters and the list goes on).  Last year our shelter received over 700 puppies and kittens from this area, most too young to go to the shelter. Fabulous fosters made our community goal of No More Homeless Pets possible in 2010, and we need people to pitch in to help again this year. Intake is about to skyrocket.  All it would take is one person in 100 in this area to rescue a pet in 2011 and we could be the best shelter in the country again this year. Can't commit yet? Why not foster for the short term?  You can be that one in a hundred.

Farrier Jam Session

  horse feet

On May the 2nd, the first monthly  farrier jam session occurred  in Green Creek.
What is a "farrier jam session"?  It is a gathering of caring horseshoers and veterinarians committed to the respectful exchange of knowledge and ideas concerning farriery, both basic and corrective.  Our goal is to evaluate two cases per month together and discuss proper trimming/shoeing with the aid of radiography and nerve blocks if necessary.  Horses and horse owners alike are bound to benefit from this effort. Farriers and veterinarians are welcome to attend these gatherings at 6 pm the first Monday of each month at the farm of Ron and Bibi Freer.  For more information, contact your farrier.

Tragedy Strikes Again

Here's Your Chance to Help

April 27th, 2011 brought devastating tornadoes to Alabama and neighboring states. Families have lost their loved ones, their homes, and their basic way of life and are faced with the daunting task of starting over completely from scratch. They have lost many beloved pets, horses, and farm animals and have no way of caring for the ones that remain.

The Birmingham Dressage & Combined Training Association is teaming up with Rhonda Johnson-Bowles from Land O' Lakes Purina Feeds, The Alabama Horse Council, Cahaba Pony Club, and US Pony Club South Region to help provide much needed relief for the equine and pet victims of these destructive tornados.

Monetary donations will be accepted and will be used to purchase needed supplies. 100% of all donations will be distributed to those in need.  More information can be found on our website, www.BDCTA.com or by contacting us at BirminghamDCTA@gmail.comFor a printable flyer click here (pdf).

Dr Kaplan

Parasite Seminar with

 Dr. Ray Kaplan May 21st

at Mill Spring Ag Center

Dr. Ray Kaplan will be here May 21, 2011 at 6 pm  to present a  program on the growing problem of equine parasite resistance to anthelmintics.   Ray M. Kaplan, DVM, PhD, DEVPC is a Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia.  He will lead an informative and insightful discussion about the current parasite issues facing today's horse owners, including how to choose and when to use the appropriate dewormer and the developing parasite resistance to dewormers.

According to Dr. Kaplan, over the past forty years, the availability of cheap and effective anthelmintic drugs (dewormers) has led to an almost complete reliance on these chemicals for parasite control in animals. Chemical-based parasite control was extremely effective for many years, but we now know this strategy has turned out to be shortsighted and unsustainable. Parasite drug resistance is now recognized globally as one of the greatest health threats to grazing livestock.

Come early for the fundraiser dinner held in conjunction with the lecture at 5:30 pm for the Mill Spring Agricultural Development Center.  There will be door prizes available to attendants during the seminar.

The  program is sponsored by Drs. Thann Boyum, Rachel Butterworth-Tice, Kris Woodaman, Sean Eastman, and Bibi Freer.  Learn why it is important for horse owners and veterinarians to be proactive about parasite resistance to the drugs that are available to us now and how to design a custom program for your farm and/or individual horse.

For more information, contact Bibi Freer at 828-894-2627.

Who Is It?

Ivey

Who doesn't know Ivey?  Here's Ivey Sumrell,  hunting with Tryon Hounds while going to school at nearby Presbyterian College. Ivey rode whenever and whereever she could. Commenting on the photograph above, Ivey says, "Her name was Exodus.... an appendix mare I kept every winter in college to hunt. She belonged to Camp High Rocks.  She could and would jump ANYTHING!"

Years later, Ivey would be the proprietor of Up and Over Farm, a training and boarding facility near Charlotte. Fast forward, today Ivey and husband Jim live in Green Creek. Ivey still hunts and trail rides. Daughter Bette has dutifully followed her mother's path in the saddle.
