Bucky Reynolds1

Mother's Day, and true to my eastern NC roots, we went out to lunch on Sunday for barbeque, while I waited for my three children to call and assure me that they were not going to write that Mommie Dearest book. (I ask for assurances every year instead of asking for, say,  a salad spinner). We were joined at  lunch by Bill and Kay Ennis. Bill is my friend that I call Hopalong, all in good fun, because he should have been born a century and a half ago as a western plains cowboy. Bill was telling us that he was on his way to "an adventure of a life time." He is going to Reno, NV to attend the Californios Ranch and Roping Event/Competition.  I had never heard of it, but evidently it is a traditional way of  working with horses and stock. I mention this because it illustrates again how wonderfully varied (and colorful) our horse community has become.  This weekend alone we had horse show competitors descend on Tryon for our big Mothers Day Show at Harmon Field;    we had several Kentucky Derby parties to celebrate Thoroughbred athletes and the Run for the Roses (including a successful  local fundraiser for Thoroughbred Retirement Fund) and now we have a cowboy packing his bags for the Wild West and old timey horsemanshipAnd I'm not even going to mention the two new equine organizations in development, that I've been instructed not to talk about yet.  Oops, I did it again.

Dr Kaplan

Parasite Seminar with

 Dr. Ray Kaplan May 21st

at Mill Spring Ag Center

Dr. Ray Kaplan will be here May 21, 2011 at 6 pm  to present a  program on the growing problem of equine parasite resistance to anthelmintics.   Ray M. Kaplan, DVM, PhD, DEVPC is a Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia.  He will lead an informative and insightful discussion about the current parasite issues facing today's horse owners, including how to choose and when to use the appropriate dewormer and the developing parasite resistance to dewormers.

According to Dr. Kaplan, over the past forty years, the availability of cheap and effective anthelmintic drugs (dewormers) has led to an almost complete reliance on these chemicals for parasite control in animals. Chemical-based parasite control was extremely effective for many years, but we now know this strategy has turned out to be shortsighted and unsustainable. Parasite drug resistance is now recognized globally as one of the greatest health threats to grazing livestock.

Come early for the fundraiser dinner held in conjunction with the lecture at 5:30 pm for the Mill Spring Agricultural Development Center.  There will be door prizes available to attendants during the seminar.

The  program is sponsored by Drs. Thann Boyum, Rachel Butterworth-Tice, Kris Woodaman, Sean Eastman, and Bibi Freer.  Learn why it is important for horse owners and veterinarians to be proactive about parasite resistance to the drugs that are available to us now and how to design a custom program for your farm and/or individual horse.

For more information, contact Bibi Freer at 828-894-2627.

Gypsy Vanner Film
Found Feather Farm Featured in Documentary

Mark J. Barrett  Gypsy Vanner Horse Documentary.
The US Movie debuts on the air this month  (May) in the United States on the BYU Network. It has already debuted in China, Canada and other parts of Europe.

This is full feature documentary that was partially filmed at Found Feather Farm in Mill Spring. The film features the farm's herd galloping through pastures. It also has a reference to Found Feather Farm, Mill Spring, North Carolina and a cameo interview of owner Terry Kirkland-Cook as an artist/ Gypsy horses owner. The film opens with a narrative of Cook's voice and the Cooks' stallion, Django, galloping across an open meadow.

Says Terry, "It was wonderful to participate in this film and sponsor it's research into the interesting history of the Romany gypsy people."

The documentary will be shown on several other US networks this year.  The Discovery Channel and PBS may be picking it up as well.

Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom Wins Derby
A Great Weekend for SC Horses

Jockey John Velazquez guided the colt, who finished ahead of Nehro and Mucho Macho Man, to a win in the first leg of the Triple Crown. But leading the race until the very end, was Shackleford.  Shackleford is a South Carolina-trained horse, a graduate of  Webb Carroll Training Center in Aiken.  The name Shackleford comes from the island off the coast of North Carolina, home to the herd of feral horses.

The Kentucky Oaks, the race for fillies, was captured by Plum Pretty, owned by South Carolinian John Fort. Another impressive SC trained horse, hailing from Cot Campbell's Dogwood Stables is Aikenite, winner of the Churchill Downs.  Finally, Donna Freyer's training facility in Camden prepped Get Stormy, who won the Woodford Reserve Turf race. All in all, a rewarding Derby weekend for South Carolina's finest.

Smart & Shiney
Smart & Shiney

Smart & Shiney is Lyle Lovett's reining horse, caught here on a stroll around the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday afternoon of Rolex. Besides being talented in the competition ring, his flashy mane and tail is a show stopper. He has Big Hair, just what you'd expect from a Lyle Lovett horse.

A Note from Olympian Jim Graham

A note arrived this week from Jim Graham and David Adamo.   They  send thank you's to the many new friends they made while their event horse,  Prince Noah, was here for surgery.
Jim writes,   "We feel so lucky to have met so many of you in the Tryon horse community. The support and generosity  we experienced was deeply moving.  We look forward to coming back to the area under better circumstances. Prince Noah is happily home and recovering well."

You Deserve a Chuckle
WIth Age Comes....Wisdom?

Stage 1:Fall off pony. Bounce. Laugh. Climb back on.

Stage 2:  Fall off horse. Run after horse, cussing. Climb back on by shimmying up horse's neck. Ride until sundown.

Stage 3: Fall off horse. Use sleeve of shirt to stop  bleeding. Have friend help you get back on horse. Take 2 Advil and apply ice packs when you get home. Ride next day.

Stage 4:   Fall off horse. Refuse advice to call ambulance;  drive self to urgent care clinic. Entertain nursing staff with previous tales of daredevil stunts on horseback.  Back to riding before cast comes off.

falling offStage 5: Fall off horse. Temporarily forget name of horse and name of husband. Flirt  shamelessly with paramedics when they arrive. Spend week in hospital  while titanium pins are screwed in place. Start riding again before doctor gives official okay.

Stage 6: Fall off horse. Fail to see any humor when hunky paramedic says, "You again?" Gain firsthand knowledge of advances in medical  technology thanks to stint in ICU. Convince self that permanent limp isn't that noticeable. Promise husband you'll give up riding. One week later purchase older, slower, shorter horse.
Stage 7: Slip off horse. Relieved when artificial joints and implanted medical devices seem unaffected. Tell  husband that scrapes and bruises are due to gardening accident.  Pretend you don't see husband roll his eyes and mutter as he walks away.
Give apple to horse.

Who Is It?

Bucky Reynolds1

If we ever establish a Hall of Fame here in Tryon Horse Country, one of the first inductees will most probably be Bucky Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds is the son of legendary horseman  J. Arthur Reynolds and the brother of (again, legendary) Betty Reynolds Oare.  Here he is riding one of this father's horses in a Harmon Field show.  Mr. Reynolds left Tryon and moved on to become one of the most celebrated riders and trainers of our time, operating out of Merryweather Farm in Warrenton, VA.

We're looking or vintage photos.

Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970.
