Nothing matches the excitement of Rolex. After weeks of rain, rain  and more rain in Kentucky, the sun came out on Saturday to give riders and horses a decent shot at one of the world's most challenging cross country courses. It was a great day of competition with no serious mishaps. This year, the Rolex shared its weekend with Reining. The cross discipline event gave English riders a chance to see the fastest growing horse sport in the country. Although I know nothing about reining, the Friday night championship was a fun and exciting evening. And I'm here to tell you, the reining crowd is engaged. Lots of hoots and hollering expressing  support of their favorite riders. Think NASCAR on hooves. I came away with a new appreciation of the sport. Sunday afternoon, prior to the start of show jumping, Equine Land Conservation Resource presented a $10,000 check to the Sibley Equestrian Conservancy in Minnesota. With the wind about to blow us away, facing the crowd, NBC Sports handed me a microphone....that didn't work. I handed it back.  Waiting for the audio glitch to be resolved, 50 very cute Pony Clubbers on very cute ponies entered the stadium. Game over.  Second rule of Public Relations is that you are NEVER going to compete with a dog or... cute kids on adorable ponies.  We walked off the field. All in all, a great Rolex weekend.

Sunday's Rolex provided the perfect (although windy) backdrop for  award of the 2010 ELCR-Breyer Animal Creations Grant.  The $10,000 award was given to the Sibley Conservancy. The Sibley Conservancy is developing a horse park in the Pequot Lakes area of Minnesota. This is the third such award Breyer has sponsored. Equine Land Conservation Resource's mission is to advance the conservation of land for horse-related activity.

Smart & Shiney
Smart & Shiney

Smart & Shiney is Lyle Lovett's reining horse, caught here on a stroll around the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday afternoon. Besides being talented in the competition ring, his flashy mane and tail is a show stopper. He has Big Hair, just what you'd expect from a Lyle Lovett horse.

A Note from Olympian Jim Graham

A note arrived this week from Jim Graham and David Adamo.   They  send thank you's to the many new friends they made while their event horse,  Prince Noah, was here for surgery.
Jim writes,   "We feel so lucky to have met so many of you in the Tryon horse community. The support and generosity  we experienced was deeply moving.  We look forward to coming back to the area under better circumstances. Prince Noah is happily home and recovering well."

Stage 1:Fall off pony. Bounce. Laugh. Climb back on.

Stage 2:  Fall off horse. Run after horse, cussing. Climb back on by shimmying up horse's neck. Ride until sundown.

Stage 3: Fall off horse. Use sleeve of shirt to stop  bleeding. Have friend help you get back on horse. Take 2 Advil and apply ice packs when you get home. Ride next day.

Stage 4:   Fall off horse. Refuse advice to call ambulance;  drive self to urgent care clinic. Entertain nursing staff with previous tales of daredevil stunts on horseback.  Back to riding before cast comes off.

falling offStage 5: Fall off horse. Temporarily forget name of horse and name of husband. Flirt  shamelessly with paramedics when they arrive. Spend week in hospital  while titanium pins are screwed in place. Start riding again before doctor gives official okay.

Stage 6: Fall off horse. Fail to see any humor when hunky paramedic says, "You again?" Gain firsthand knowledge of advances in medical  technology thanks to stint in ICU. Convince self that permanent limp isn't that noticeable. Promise husband you'll give up riding. One week later purchase older, slower, shorter horse.
Stage 7: Slip off horse. Relieved when artificial joints and implanted medical devices seem unaffected. Tell  husband that scrapes and bruises are due to gardening accident.  Pretend you don't see husband roll his eyes and mutter as he walks away.
Give apple to horse.

Who Is It?

 Walt and Rick Otto

This photograph is about as vintage as it gets.  Taken in the early 1950's of Walt Otto of Creekside Farm in Landrum and his late brother, Rick (famous for his ribs at Hare and Hound).  The horse was King Arthur, the collie was Sable.   The Detroit Free Press was the newspaper that young Walt and Rick Otto delivered on snowy days in their childhood town of Birmingham, Michigan.  Norman Rockwell, paint this!

We're looking or vintage photos.

Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970.
