The Steeplechase went off without a hitch.

A good crowd, decked out tailgates to beat the band, and a full card of racing. No mishaps, no glitches.  The Pony Club stick horse race was fun, as well as chaotic. People came from all over. Some came for all the social fa-fa fa-fa. Some came to drink, eat and gamble. And some even came to see a few of the country's best athletes compete.  Legendary trainer Jonathan Sheppard had horses here as did Janet Elliot. And nobody, nobody can belt out the National Anthem like Susie Kocher and then put down the microphone and climb aboard for the amateur race. Really, does it get any better?

Vard Heb=nry and Abner

Vard Henry is the corresponding secretary for the Humane Society, and as such, she gets to visit with a lot of dogs. But six years ago, she met Abner at the shelter, and he whispered, "Take me home." The rest is history. Abner, according to Vard, is the most wonderful, dignified dog on earth. The breed is anyone's guess. Abner was recently joined by Sydney, another rescue who is "a work in progress."  All together, with Vard's other canine friends, the brood is one happy family. We should all be so lucky.

Who Is It?

Cathy Groves and Dan

Here's a great story from Katherine Groves.

"This came of the front page of the paper in Winston-Salem where I grew up.  My mother had told I couldn't talk to my boyfriend, so I rode "Dan" to the Magic Market to use the phone booth.  Imagine my surprise when I ended up on the front page of our local paper the next day. Got my butt grounded for a week!   Always listen to your mother." Catherine lives in Tryon and rides high level dressage and  has competed internationally.

We're looking or vintage photos.

Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970.
