I love stories. Any kind of story, but the ones that involve horses are the best. So I particulary love the stories that accompany the vintage photographs that come to me each week. This week, Sarah Hinds Gary sent of a photo of herself and Silent Sam, a horse stabled here in the 70's, owned by her great-aunt Doris Blackwood, a Tryon legend if ever there was one. Gerald Pack remembers him as "a good all round horse, one that she hunted, hacked and showed." Looking up the gelding's name, I discovered that Silent Sam is also the name of the confederate soldier in bronze in Chapel Hill, facing Franklin Street. And, Silent Sam is the name of a gangster-cop movie--evidently extremely violent so I never saw it, and finally, Silent Sam is a cocktail made with vodka. Gerald thinks the horse was most likely named after the cocktail. Cheers!

You've probably seen the new Barn Book around. The cover art was supplied by our own Terry Kirkland-Cook of Found Feather Farm in Mill Spring. Terry is an equine artist and a breeder of Gypsy Vanner horses. The cute foal on the cover is Isaac. He is out of FFF's Gypsy Vanner Talia and the amazing Lenny Horse. He sold almost days after being born in 2008. Issac is now living in coastal Maine with his new owners and will be standing at stud for them this year.

The Art
of
Steeplechase
One doesn't just go to the Steeplechase. It's far more important than that. For many new residents, it's a bonafide rite of passage.
In the Foothills, it means spring is here. In planning your Steeplechase Saturday, remember it's an Event.
So girls, grab your fabulous wide-brimmed hats and Lilly dresses and guys, put on those madras shorts and pastel Polos. Plan your tailgating food, your theme (you know...your par-tay theme), study up on Steeplechasing the sport and get ready to pick your favorite horse.
Need a little help getting started with all this fabulous-ness? You're in luck.
April 12th at Chateau du Cheval (Speigel Farm in Landrum) there will be a fun evening of Steeplechase 101 with instruction on tailgating done right, as well as fabulous hat making and a Steeplechase primer, so you'll look pretty, watch the races like a pro and have the party that strangers want to crash. Call 828-817-0732 for details.

In Passing
Golden-era Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, who had a lifelong interest in horses and starred in the film "National Velvet," died March 23 at age 79.
In "National Velvet," Taylor plays a young Velvet Brown, who trains a horse for the Grand National Steeplechase, ends up disguising herself as a male jockey, and rides the horse to victory. Many of the scenes from that movie were filmed at Santa Anita Park in Southern California. Miss Taylor rode many of the mounted scenes.

Her life with horses, however, was much more than her role at age 12 as Velvet Brown. Read More

uh oh...Box Fan Recall
Affects Horse Owners
Lasko Products Inc., manufacturer of home appliances such as fans and heaters, is recalling approximately 4.8 million box fans (similar to those frequently used in barns by horse owners) after an electrical problem in the fan's motor has caused some of these fans to catch fire, reportedly causing several house fires and a barn fire....

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About National Velvet

1. The story that Mi tells to Donald about a shipwrecked horse is based on a true story about a New Zealand-bred thoroughbred named "Moiffa" who did in fact survive his ordeal and went on to win the Grand National the following year. 2. After production was completed, arrangements were made to allow Elizabeth Taylor to keep the horse. 3. The race-course map which Mi shows Velvet is an accurate portrayal of the real-life Grand National course at Aintree, near Liverpool. What's more, like the movie, the course actually has a Becher's Brook jump and a Canal Turn jump with its sharp left turn. 4. The Pie was played by King Charles, a grandson of Man O' War and whose owner had trained him as a show jumper. 5. The movie premiered at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 6. Producer Pandro Berman originally did not think that 12 year old Elizabeth Taylor was right for the role due to the young actress' lack of physical development. In addition to riding lessons, she began eating more and doing "chest enlargement exercises". By the time the casting decisions were made, nature had given young Miss Taylor the necessary inches. (editor's comment: No comment) 7. Great Movie mistakes: At one point towards the end of the Grand National, the horses are seen running the wrong way around the track - clockwise, instead of counterclockwise. 8. Spencer Tracy was considered in the late 1930's to be cast as Mr. Brown. The film was not made for another 8 years. 9. The stars of the movie are Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney. But did you know Angela Lansbury plays her sister Edwina and Arthur Treacher ( of fish-and-chips fame) plays "Man with Umbrella"? 10. National Velvet won 2 Academy Awards

Paula and Mike Mullinax have adopted several new family members from the shelter. "Mary, came into the shelter with six pups. Howling 4 Spirit (rescue group) took the pups, so I contacted a rescue in New Jersey and they accepted Mary, then Dutchess. We were fostering her for three weeks until the transport left, but by that time Mike was in love with her, so here she is 2 years later. "

Who Is It?

Tryon resident Sarah Hinds Gary can claim an impressive linage of Tryon horsewomen. Her mother, Doris Hinds, has a long Tryon history as well as her great-aunt, Doris Blackwood. As a child, Sarah would come to Tryon on school breaks with her mother to visit her great-aunt Doris at Tootin' Hill, the historic farm in Hunting Country. The three of them would ride out together. Sarah remembers the time fondly. "We just rode on properties here and waved and knew each other. It was the 'old days' still and cars slowed down on the road. I used to ride up on the Abernathy's hill (before the Lovings had moved in). It was very sweet and my great Aunt Doris would throw lovely parties. I remember the half wheel of Stilton cheese with port poured in the large bendy vase type container with mushrooms soaked in something and a long crooked fork for taking them out.. people formally dressed for parties and lots of fun. She was a fun personality. And everyone has heard the stories of the Ferrari that she drove off the road as she thought the accelerator was the brake. Lots of fun memories... visiting great Aunt Doris! We were supposed to go to the Kentucky Derby together when I was twenty or so and the idea was that I would drive her... but when it was time to go she was going to drive the truck., with carriage already loaded. I had to decide to opt out as she had gotten older and was a notoriously bad driver. She would pass on hills etc. but she could jump anything and if one were to ride a horse, one was told that one had to take every jump!" Above, Sarah is pictured with Mrs. Blackwood's outstanding horse, Silent Sam.
We're looking for vintage photos.
Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970.
