I have to share this story. My daughter sent me a message on Facebook saying she had found a wonderful Holsteiner on the Internet for sale and wouldn't it be great if....well, you know how that story goes. Never mind that she is a poor college student, lives in an apt, works two jobs and carries a full academic load. What are you thinking? But, I got a giggle out of picturing her at work (a smoothie and wrap shop in Durango) during a slow period, surfing for horses. Of course, there are lots of tempting deals out there, with many farms trying to thin their herds. Meanwhile, her co-worker is trying to buy a lap giraffe online (google "lap giraffe" if you dare). Rainy days, idle hands and too many of us have fallen prey to that menace that plagues us all--looking at horses on the web. Of course, there's a name for it: horse porn.
Have a good week.

In Passing
Golden-era Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, who had a lifelong interest in horses and starred in the film "National Velvet," died March 23 at age 79.
In "National Velvet," Taylor plays a young Velvet Brown, who trains a horse for the Grand National Steeplechase, ends up disguising herself as a male jockey, and rides the horse to victory. Many of the scenes from that movie were filmed at Santa Anita Park in Southern California. Miss Taylor rode many of the mounted scenes.

Her life with horses, however, was much more than her role at age 12 as Velvet Brown. Read More

uh oh...Box Fan Recall
Affects Horse Owners
Lasko Products Inc., manufacturer of home appliances such as fans and heaters, is recalling approximately 4.8 million box fans (similar to those frequently used in barns by horse owners) after an electrical problem in the fan's motor has caused some of these fans to catch fire, reportedly causing several house fires and a barn fire....

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About National Velvet

1. The story that Mi tells to Donald about a shipwrecked horse is based on a true story about a New Zealand-bred thoroughbred named "Moiffa" who did in fact survive his ordeal and went on to win the Grand National the following year. 2. After production was completed, arrangements were made to allow Elizabeth Taylor to keep the horse. 3. The race-course map which Mi shows Velvet is an accurate portrayal of the real-life Grand National course at Aintree, near Liverpool. What's more, like the movie, the course actually has a Becher's Brook jump and a Canal Turn jump with its sharp left turn. 4. The Pie was played by King Charles, a grandson of Man O' War and whose owner had trained him as a show jumper. 5. The movie premiered at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 6. Producer Pandro Berman originally did not think that 12 year old Elizabeth Taylor was right for the role due to the young actress' lack of physical development. In addition to riding lessons, she began eating more and doing "chest enlargement exercises". By the time the casting decisions were made, nature had given young Miss Taylor the necessary inches. (editor's comment: No comment) 7. Great Movie mistakes: At one point towards the end of the Grand National, the horses are seen running the wrong way around the track - clockwise, instead of counterclockwise. 8. Spencer Tracy was considered in the late 1930's to be cast as Mr. Brown. The film was not made for another 8 years. 9. The stars of the movie are Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney. But did you know Angela Lansbury plays her sister Edwina and Arthur Treacher ( of fish-and-chips fame) plays "Man with Umbrella"? 10. National Velvet won 2 Academy Awards

A little more Jodi Lees...

"In this photo where I am bareback and barefooted is at Willow Bend Polo and Hunt Club in Dallas, TX. I was 13 years old on Choo Choo - a horse I owned for 25 years until she died at 29 yrs old. We were members of the club and they had 20,000 acres to ride on! Heaven! I was the rebel amongst all of the hunters - as you can see - bareback, barefooted and a trail rider. My Mother gave me a gift of a package of 8 lessons with a very loud, screaming Colonel there. Group lessons. I knew nothing and came out crying every time. At the end of the seventh lesson, Mom said I did not have to go back for the last one. I vowed never to take another lesson in my life. But at age 18, I was introduced to dressage and eventing and that was the end of that!" "In this photo where I am swimming with my horse - Choo Choo again - is here in Greenville over off of Pelham Rd. I was 16 and went to Wade Hampton High School. (Still a trail rider before I saw the light and became introduced to dressage and eventing when I was 18). The pond was on some property near the barn I was at - we just rode out and all around the area. I used to gallop her in to the water and we would race across. It was so much fun! Again, bareback and barefooted and helmet-less, of course!" Thank you Jodi for sharing these great pictures. |

Bob and Susanne Then rescued Trixie from a deplorable situation along with her second litter and brought them as a family to FHS. She had such a sweet disposition that when the the pups were old enough, we adopted her. She is basically a couch potato, loves everyone, gets along with our other dogs, cats, and horses and has never missed a meal or treat in her life! These Pitties are really wonderful dogs and we would get another one in a heart beat when the time comes. Bob & Suanne Then

Who Is It?

Professional dressage rider, trainer and judge Jodi Jones Lees is seen here at three years old, circa 1964. This snapshot was most likely taken at Tweetsie Railroad. Says Jodi, "Our family has laughed for years at the 'hat' that Mom had me in. She always liked to put me in 'fashion' that was different and unique. I finally rebelled around junior high time." Jodi, after an iffy start with horses, found her passion in dressage and eventing. These days she shares Rivers Edge Farm in Campobello with husband Bill.
