Last week I was in Lexington meeting with ELCR.
Some of the best minds (not mine, but others) in the industry were gathered to plan a strategy for the continued fight against the alarming loss of open land to development. The loss of land effects every aspect of horse keeping. It determines if we have a place to grow hay and grain, raise foals, ride, fox hunt, race, compete, drive and more. We're losing 6,000 acres per day. Currently, need 36 million acres of land to feed the US horse population. Biofuel production is another fly in the ointment since it's driving up the cost of feed and hay. Finally, the NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) attitude is closing horses out of recreational and suburban lands. When will it affect you? Too late to do anything about it? The alarm has been sounded. Consider yourself warned.

During this practical, hands-on workshop you will learn how to recognize and use the visual responses of the horse to your touch to find and release accumulated stress in key junctions of the body that most affect equine performance.

Exhange Student Seeks Horsey Host Family
The American Field Service (AFS) is looking for a host family for next school year for a high school boy. This boy will be placed somewhere in western North Carolina. He is just one example of the great students looking for host families, but the coordinators really think this particular boy would be a very good fit for a family with horses and/or other farm animals. Says Lone Krarup of AFS, "If a family would like to host and have specific wishes for their student we can search in our big pool of students for a good match. Hosting is so rewarding, and we have such a resourceful community here in the Carolina Foothills." Contact Lone at 828-863-4020.

Equitrekking.com Spotlights
Tryon Horse Country
This week, Tryon Horse Country was added as a special segment on the Equitrekking website, the online companion to the Emmy Award winning PBS show. You've probably seen the show, where host Darly Newman travels the country, and the world, seeking the best rides. The show reaches 84% of US television households and is broadcast in 65 countires, including France, Italy, Japan, Russia and Turkey. Equitrekking and Equitrekking.com have been featured in USA Today, New York Times, Washington Post.
About Darley Newman
The host and producer of Equitrekking, Darley is a seasoned journalist who has also been involved with projects at CBS, 48 Hours, WB, and various documentaries for PBS. She is also a (South) Carolina girl, who as a child spent summers riding at camp in Hendersonville. We hope she brings her crew to Tryon Horse Country in the near future and checks out our "best kept secret."

They're the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt pairing of the hooved set. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, are both pregnant.
Announced first this week, Rachel Alexandra 2009 Horse of the Year and the darling of the horse racing world, is in foal. Stonestreet Farms announced the pregnancy confirmation March 7, two weeks after the maiden mare was bred. Rachel Alexandra was mated to Curlin on February 21st at Kentucky's Lane's End Farm.

Zenyatta, the 7-year-old super mare, was second to confirm her impending motherhood. The Zenyatta website reported that her ultrasound scan revealed she is in foal after being bred 15 days ago to Darley stallion Bernardini, the 3-year-old champion of 2006.
As my mother used to say, sounds like they all went to the same picnic.

Who Is It?

Here's Sue Carrier of Green Creek at 19 years in 1966 at Cherry Meadow Farm (Dorothy Sachey's farm) in East Northport on Long Island. Sue is riding a draft cross that was a project horse. Sue, like so many of that generation, rode whatever horse was available and worked in the barn in exchange for lessons. She did a little competition in hunter equitation. By high school and college, she was teaching beginner lessons. Sue got her own first horse after college. A life with horses has included dressage competition, eventing and finally being persuaded by husband Dick to try her hand at driving. She is an Carolina Carriage Club member.
We're looking for vintage photos. Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970. |
