We had some visitors here this week - the management of Mountain Biz Works, an Appalachian economic development agency. We went to some farms, a tack shop, a feed store, and some other equine-related businesses. A day later I got a note, essentially saying, "we had no idea that your horses provided so many jobs." Our week was shattered when we heard the devastating news from Japan. As someone who has a grandchild in Maui, and extended family in Kyoto, needless to say we had a frantic day and a half of texting, calling and emailing waiting to hear that everyone was okay and accounted for. Equine welfare groups are gearing up to go help but no details are available yet on how the rest of us can support these efforts. Stay tuned. Libbie Johnson |

Equitrekking.com Spotlights
Tryon Horse Country
This week, Tryon Horse Country was added as a special segment on the Equitrekking website, the online companion to the Emmy Award winning PBS show. You've probably seen the show, where host Darly Newman travels the country, and the world, seeking the best rides. The show reaches 84% of US television households and is broadcast in 65 countires, including France, Italy, Japan, Russia and Turkey. Equitrekking and Equitrekking.com have been featured in USA Today, New York Times, Washington Post.
About Darley Newman
The host and producer of Equitrekking, Darley is a seasoned journalist who has also been involved with projects at CBS, 48 Hours, WB, and various documentaries for PBS. She is also a (South) Carolina girl, who as a child spent summers riding at camp in Hendersonville. We hope she brings her crew to Tryon Horse Country in the near future and checks out our "best kept secret."

They're the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt pairing of the hooved set. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, are both pregnant.
Announced first this week, Rachel Alexandra 2009 Horse of the Year and the darling of the horse racing world, is in foal. Stonestreet Farms announced the pregnancy confirmation March 7, two weeks after the maiden mare was bred. Rachel Alexandra was mated to Curlin on February 21st at Kentucky's Lane's End Farm.

Zenyatta, the 7-year-old super mare, was second to confirm her impending motherhood. The Zenyatta website reported that her ultrasound scan revealed she is in foal after being bred 15 days ago to Darley stallion Bernardini, the 3-year-old champion of 2006.
As my mother used to say, sounds like they all went to the same picnic.

Clear View Farm Sponsors IEA Program for Student Riders Jeanne Smith and Clear View Farm are sponsoring an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) program at their Landrum training facility. They would like to get high school and middle school students to begin lessons at the farm for both the IEA team as well as regular clients.
The mission of IEA is to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools (primarily ages 11 through 19) to equestrian sports, to provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian programs, to develop understanding and appreciation of equestrian sports through organized student competitions, to provide students with organized competitive events and to provide additional equine educational opportunities. Also, currently, there are few opportunities for these students to earn scholarship money. Through the IEA, students may have the opportunity to earn scholarships towards their college education. The unique aspect of these competitions, both at the local and national level, is that none of the riders will supply their own horses or tack. Instead, the horses, saddle and other tack are all provided to the students at the show. The host team arranges for the horses and equipment. Some of the equipment may be borrowed from various training barns and facilities. Though the rider and horse have a short opportunity at orientation in the over fences classes, essentially, the horses is new to the rider, and the scores are based upon horsemanship, not the horse. The competitions involve six classes jumping over fences no greater than three ft and numerous flat equitation classes. The IEA is an affiliate of the United States Equestrian Federation, the United States Hunter Jumper Association, and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Click here to learn more or call Jeanne Smith at 864-895-7845.

A Look Back Horses in the City (1906)
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k
This is a fascinating movie. A camera was mounted on the front of a street car in San Francisco 104 years ago (1906). Perhaps the oldest "home movie" that you will ever see. Look at the hats the ladies were wearing and the long dresses. Some of the cars had the steering wheels on the right side. Sure were still a lot of horse drawn vehicles in use. Notice how the horses are not bothered by all the mechanical commotion. Horses at the turn of the century were often described as urban animals.
It was the first 35mm film ever. It was taken by camera mounted on the front of a cable car. The number of automobiles is staggering for 1906. The clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.
How many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses? Talk about going green. It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for processing.

Ahhh. The Sunday afternoon nap with your faithful companion. JP and Judi Debeuf sent these photos of their little dog "Pumpkin" which they adopted from FHS in 2010. Pumpkin took up residence with 2 Icelandic sheepdogs and two cats (also from the shelter), all of which have bonded together in the house. Pumpkin was a "high positive" for heartworms when he came to the shelter, was treated, and has just blossomed. Of course, a little spoiling has also helped!

Who Is It?

At three years old, here's Pam Maxwell of Green Creek on Star at the family farm in Chicago, 1956. Pam came to horses by way of genetics - her father was a polo pony trainer. Pam grew up also riding and training polo ponies as well as riding a range of other disciplines - western, english, you name it. Pam resides with husband Jim on Bit O' Luck Farm where they train hunter/jumpers as well as offering instruction.
We're looking for vintage photos. Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970. |
