Happy Happy Birthday to TWITHC!  It's our second year of bringing you the finest (??) in area happenings. I'd like to say thank you to all of you who have sent us your news, shared your vintage photographs - even the ones that make you cringe and the rest of us giggle. Thank you to those businesses who have supported us with your advertising.  Thank you for the compliments we've received and thanks to those who send us a note on Monday mornings to point out dangling participles and split infinitives. It really does take a village.  Our readership has increased every week.  We somehow have found our way around the globe. No joke.  It's been a lot of fun, and as long as it stays fun, and as long as it's worthwhile to you, our reader, we'll continue to cobble together enough content for a weekly effort.  Thank you.

TR&HC Offers Scholarships to College Bound Young Riders

 logo TR&H

The Tryon Riding and Hunt Club has a long-standing tradition of supporting equine enthusiasts in Polk, Henderson, Rutherfordton, Spartanburg, and Greenville counties.  This year the organization will continue to offer educational scholarships to equestrian-oriented high school graduating seniors and those individuals currently attending an institution of higher learning who seek further individual development through additional educational programs.  Amount of scholarship may vary, but will be no lower than $500.

Recipients of the TR&HC Education Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Either a graduating senior accepted to a higher educational program or an individual currently entered in a higher educational program.  First priority for award selection will be given to high school seniors.
  • Be a member of a local/national equine organization such as the TR&HC, BRHJA, U.S. Pony Club, Tryon Hounds, Green Creek Hounds, USEF, USEA or actively participating in the equine industry in North Carolina Counties of Polk, Hendersonville, Rutherfordton and South Carolina Counties of Spartanburg and Greenville.
  • Those applicants demonstrating the greatest financial need will be considered first in the awards process.
  • Complete an application, financial need statement and interview.
  • Applicants may not be related to any TR&HC Board of Director member, officer, or employee.
  • Deadline:  Applicants may request an application from the TR&HC office in February of 2011.  Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2011.  Each applicant will be contacted for an interview in late May. The scholarship will be awarded in May.

Clear View Farm Sponsors IEA Program for Student Riders

 Collegiate young riders

Jeanne Smith and Clear View Farm are sponsoring an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) program at their Landrum training facility.  They would like to get high school and middle school students to begin lessons at the farm for both the IEA team as well as regular clients.

The mission of IEA  is to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools (primarily ages 11 through 19) to equestrian sports, to provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian programs, to develop understanding and appreciation of equestrian sports through organized student competitions, to provide students with organized competitive events and to provide additional equine educational opportunities. Also, currently, there are few opportunities for these students to earn scholarship money. Through the IEA, students may have the opportunity to earn scholarships towards their college education.

The unique aspect of these competitions, both at the local and national level, is that none of the riders will supply their own horses or tack. Instead, the horses, saddle and other tack are all provided to the students at the show. The host team arranges for the horses and equipment. Some of the equipment may be borrowed from various training barns and facilities. Though the rider and horse have a short opportunity at orientation in the over fences classes, essentially, the horses is new to the rider, and the scores are based upon horsemanship, not the horse. The competitions involve six classes jumping over fences no greater than three ft and numerous flat equitation classes.IEA logo

The IEA is an affiliate of the United States Equestrian Federation, the United States Hunter Jumper Association, and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.  Click here to learn more or call Jeanne Smith at 864-895-7845.

A Look Back
Horses in the City
(1906)

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=NINOxRxze9k

This is a fascinating movie. A camera was mounted on the front of a street car in San Francisco 104 years ago (1906). Perhaps the oldest "home movie" that you will ever see.  Look at the hats the ladies were wearing and the long dresses. Some of the cars had the steering wheels on the right side. Sure were still a lot of horse drawn vehicles in use. Notice how the horses are not bothered by all the mechanical commotion. Horses at the turn of the century were often described as urban animals.

It was the first 35mm film ever. It was taken by camera mounted on the front of a cable car. The number of automobiles is staggering for 1906. The clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.

How many "street cleaning" people were employed to pick up after the horses? Talk about going green.
It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for processing.

Tryon Equine to Offer

Chiropractic Services

Karen Reynolds, DVM is certified to practice animal chiropractic care as a non-invasive tool to enhance wellness, improve performance, and complement existing veterinary treatment. Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system, which is the control center for muscle and organ function, and even behavior. In chiropractic philosophy, if a segment of the spine or a joint is not moving through its normal range of motion, then the nerves do not fire properly, and the body cannot function at full potential.

Remember the 60's?

Remember Peter Max?

Peter Max painting
Of course you do. Peter Max was the pop art icon that had that Yellow Submarine-style. As it turns out, he's also an animal welfare advocate and wanted to offer his help after hearing the story of a 15 year old NYC carriage horse that was rescued from slaughter.  The Peter Max painting, "Bobby II," will be sold to raise funds for Equine Advocates,a horse rescue organization in upstate New York, and for Henry Street Settlement, a New York City social services group.

Bob Then on pony At three years old, Bob Then of Campobello was already happy about being in the saddle. This photo is from 1946 and taken by a children's photographer in New York City, where Bob's family lived. Bob re-entered a life with horses later in life and has competed paso finos, andalusians and lusitanos.  He and wife Suanne now enjoy pleasure riding on pretty days.
