Saving our Horse Country is always a passionate topic around here. You don't have to go far to see where horse farms have disappeared, paved over for rampant surburban growth and "quaint" pseudo communities with names like Wickerby or Old Mill (what mill? where?).  That doesn't mean  there isn't a place for well-planned neighborhoods that maintain the character of a horse community.  But it does mean putting your land in a conservation easement is the best way to protect large and small tracks for future open space and farms. An enthusiastic crowd met Sunday afternoon to hear more about efforts to stop the rapid loss of land to unrestricted development. The US Dept of Forestry estimates that three years ago land was being lost at 4.25 acres per minute. The economy has slowed that rate somewhat, but when things pick up, the land grab will be on again.  If this is a topic you'd like to explore, call your local Land Trust and have the conversation. You may want to do that sooner than later since development rights tax credits are due to expire at the end of this year, and who knows if they will be renewed or... become history.

Remember the 60's?

Remember Peter Max?

Peter Max painting
Of course you do. Peter Max was the pop art icon that had that Yellow Submarine-style. As it turns out, he's also an animal welfare advocate and wanted to offer his help after hearing the story of a 15 year old NYC carriage horse that was rescued from slaughter.  The Peter Max painting, "Bobby II," will be sold to raise funds for Equine Advocates,a horse rescue organization in upstate New York, and for Henry Street Settlement, a New York City social services group.

Tryon Equine to Offer

Chiropractic Services

Karen Reynolds, DVM is certified to practice animal chiropractic care as a non-invasive tool to enhance wellness, improve performance, and complement existing veterinary treatment. Chiropractic exams can take place at your home or at Tryon Equine Hospital in Columbus, NC.

Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system, which is the control center for muscle and organ function, and even behavior. In chiropractic philosophy, if a segment of the spine or a joint is not moving through its normal range of motion, then the nerves do not fire properly, and the body cannot function at full potential.

Who Is It?

Nancy Hasselbring on Red

In her youth, Nancy Hasselbring of Kensington, CT was crazy about horses. Here she is on Red, circa 1956.  Red was her favorite horse from the local hack stable, Hubbard Farm. Nancy didn't get her own horse until she was 21 and was able to buy it herself. Over the years she has done eventing and dressage. She rescues the  occasional horse, puts in some training and then finds it the right home. Nancy made the Foothills her home six years ago and is happily settled at Overtime Acres in Green Creek.
