What a week! Happy news and sad news kept pouring in. Mike Schatzberg of Cherokee Hill Farm said goodbye to his partner of many years in an eloquent farewell. You can read it on the link to our Horse Country website. We also said a sad good-bye to local horsewomen Mary Jane McDonald and Patty Volbrecht this week. Ride On! my friends! Green Creek Equestrian Community, a neighborhood of horse farms that last year joined the equestrian Adopt-A-Highway program here because they wanted to ride without stepping on trash and broken bottles, had a Clean Up Day this week. Kudos to this group for their Git 'er Done spirit. Tryon Riding and Hunt Club is still looking for a few hardy souls who long for the wind in their hair, so to speak. Amateur jockeys are being sought for the popular Fox Hunters Cup. If you think you've got a fast horse, give 'em a call. We'll be cheering you on - from our tailgate seats. And finally, the NC Horse Council has its public vote to renew the feed assessment that funds our NC Equine promotion projects. You can support this by stopping by your county extension office and picking up a ballot. Voting day is March 15th, but you can also pick up an absentee ballot Feb 25 - Mar 14. It couldn't be easier. Support the NC horse industry with your vote. Libbie Johnson |

Residents of the Green Creek Equestrian Community who collectively adopted a highway last year, had a Clean-up day this past Wednesday. This group, dedicated to keeping their section of Horse Country litter free, worked for 2 hours and picked up a total of 31 bags of trash. We raise our glass to their Git 'er Done Spirit!

USEF Announces Grants for High School Equestrians

USEF announced this week that high school equestrians may benefit from more than $20,000 in grants from the Federation this year. The USEF is offering the funds to qualified students, high schools and equestrian clubs across the United States through the organization's High School Equestrian Athlete program. Qualified students must be members of a USEF Recognized or International Affiliate Association and have completed at least one full year in the High School Equestrian Athlete program, which is sponsored by the USEF, based in Lexington, Kentucky. Participants may win $1,000 USEF grants towards educational or equestrian pursuits. Recipients of the 2011 USEF grants will be randomly selected July 29th, with one winner from each Recognized or International Affiliate Association. In addition, USEF will award eight $500 grants to high schools and equestrian clubs, choosing clubs and schools with the most students enrolled in the High School Equestrian Athlete program. Horse show associations are not eligible for the group grants. More than 2,800 students have participated in the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program since it began in 2009. Enrolled student equestrians may wear USEF varsity equestrian apparel, such as letter jackets, hats and other logo items. Email for more information

Who Is It?

Here's Merrybuck and Nancy Pemberton around 1969 in Huntington, WV. "This was the first horse I ever jumped. I was cooling her out after a lesson and decided to sit on her, bareback with only a halter. She got bored and jumped out of the ring. I didn't actually stay on,but decided at that moment that jumping was l my destiny!" Nancy has lived all over the country, always with a (jumping) horse in tow. Today she can be spotted in the ring at Red Gate Farm trying to convince Tommy, her jumping horse, that he now wants to be a dressage horse. Stay tuned.
We're looking for vintage photos. Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970. |
