What do you want for Valentine's Day? Maybe you're like me and you just want those barn essentials. I get downright giddy over double-ended snaps. I'd love to have an extra water trough heater and an extention cord that's a half a mile long. I'd like to have some new fleece-lined winter riding pants-but not the ones that make me look, you know, huge. I'd like to have a twelve pack of wormers. I'd like to have rubber mats to cover, well, everything - the mushy muddy spot in front of the barn, by the water trough, in the barn aisle. I like to have a trailer makeover, with new graphics instead of the sad peeling manufacturer logo- something graphically stunning. And clever. I'd like a case of Cowboy Magic detangler-some for my horse and some for me. I'd really like to have cell phone reception in the barn, any barn. I'd like to have a Deer and Wild Turkey Advance Notification System for my saddle and better health insurance when the system doesn't work. And some nice equestrian inspired Crane stationary to write all the thank you notes for my double-ended snaps. Or, chocolate works. Libbie Johnson |

According to last week's New Yorker rehearsals are in full swing for The War Horse play at the Lincoln Center Theater. The production has been playing to sold out crowds in London for four years. The play is based on a children's book about the universal suffering of war and centers on Joey, a farm horse from a Devonshire village who is shipped off to serve in France on the front lines. The play uses life size equine puppets to tell the story of Joey and his young owner, also a soldier.

Could one of your horses be a TROT Superstar?
The Therapeutic Riding of Tryon (TROT) program at FENCE is looking for volunteer horses for our spring session which runs Mar 12 through May 21.
Sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2 PM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM until noon. Horses are used only once a week and TROT tries to accommodate the owner's desired day. Usually there are two horses and riders in the ring simultaneously, with a horse leader, TROT rider and two side walkers for each horse/rider combination. It has been very interesting to watch the wonderful horses that have been a part of the TROT sessions become happy participants in this very worthwhile program. The horses know they are important! and love being partners with their riders and the volunteers. Of course there is petting and grooming and happiness in the barn before they are tacked up for each ride. Our lovely Rosemary's barn and ring are located in a very quiet corner of FENCE that is easily accessible to all. All volunteer horses continue to live at their own homes, but are brought to our venue for each of their sessions by their generous owners or another volunteer using our TROT trailer. If you have a nice quiet, kind horse that is sound at the walk and jog who would like to have another career or a retiree who would like a part-time job being a TROT "star", please contact Norm Powers at therapeuticriding@fence.org or call FENCE 828-859-9021 to arrange for our three-part horse evaluation. You can read more about the TROT program or volunteer yourself by visiting www.FENCE.org. or call FENCE at 828-859-9021.Volunteer training this year is scheduled for Feb. 26, (Sat.) at FENCE house or we can make special arrangements for you to train individually. Please contact us if you and/or your horse want to be a part of this special and rewarding program.

Farewell, Anapka
Remember last year's news about Anapka the flying donkey? Most of you were in a tailspin about the sheer cruelty of parasailing a donkey (or any animal) as a publicity stunt. Sadly, Anapka has died, most likely of a heart attack.
The gray female equid became virally famous in July 2010 after parasailing 150 feet in the air, towed by a speedboat, for 30 minutes over Russia's Azov Sea. Anapka's nervous journey through the wild blue yonder raised controversy from animal rights activists around the globe.
Purchased by British newspaper "The Sun" last fall, the donkey lived out her some of her last months in the Kremlin Stables, where she reportedly enjoyed spa treatment for an equid in the five-star facility.
The world-famous donkey became sick in December and passed away recently. Veterinarians indicated that the donkey's death was likely caused by complications of her forced flight, as she refused to eat, suffered from frequent dizziness and showed signs of ongoing stress.

Would ya look at that face? That face needed a special home and Nancy Pemberton of Columbus came to the rescue of Mufasa. Says Nancy, "We believe him to be a pug/cairn terrier mix-which means he's a lap dog that chases deer. He's a very odd little dog - one that I love dearly."

Who Is It?
Before he was a purveyor of fine trucks and trailers and before he was a civic leader and equestrian community supporter, he was a handsome cowboy in a tie from Columbus, GA.
Here's Ken Feagin in the mid-60's aboard Poco. Ken grew up with horses, beginning his life in the saddle at six years old. He competed in western pleasure, rough stock and timed events. Ken has continued his life with horses and has hunted with Tryon Hounds and served on the board of Tryon Riding and Hunt for many years. Ken, we salute you!
We're looking for vintage photos. Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970. |
