If you're a horse person, and you have email, chances are you probably got the urgent message this week from Barnesville, OH concerning 52 horses whose owner had died and were headed for slaughter Feb 5th if homes were not found. The call to action went out on Jan 27th and by Tuesday Feb 1, all horses had been rescued.  There are some lessons to be learned here. First off, if you have horses, especially if you have 52, make sure you have a Plan B if something were to happen to you. The second lesson is whether you're fueling a revolution in Cairo or trying to save horses from needless bad ending, social media is the way to connect. The news of  the horses flew around  the Internet. I googled  Barnesville horses in need, and stopped after ten pages of notices on Facebook, Twitter, Craigslist, blogs, rescue sites, etc.  The whole country was aware of the plight of the horses. This story, thankfully, had a happy ending.

 Could one of your horses
be a TROT Superstar?

The Therapeutic Riding of Tryon (TROT) program at FENCE is looking for volunteer horses for our spring session which runs Mar 12 through  May 21.
 Ashley TROT

Sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2 PM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM until noon.  Horses are used only once a week and TROT tries to accommodate the owner's desired day.  Usually there are two horses and riders in the ring simultaneously, with a horse leader, TROT rider and two side walkers for each horse/rider combination.  It has been very interesting to watch the wonderful horses that have been a part of the TROT sessions become happy participants in this very worthwhile program.  The horses know they are important! and love being partners with their riders and the volunteers.  Of course there is petting and grooming and happiness in the barn before they are tacked up for each ride.  Our lovely Rosemary's barn and ring are located in a very quiet corner of FENCE that is easily accessible to all. All volunteer horses continue to live at their own homes, but are brought to our venue for each of their sessions by their generous owners or another volunteer using our TROT trailer.  If you have a nice quiet, kind horse that is sound at the walk and jog who would like to have another career or a retiree who would like a part-time job being a TROT "star", please contact Norm Powers at therapeuticriding@fence.org or call FENCE 828-859-9021 to arrange for our three-part horse evaluation.  You can read more about the TROT program or volunteer yourself by visiting www.FENCE.org.  or call FENCE at 828-859-9021.Volunteer training this year is scheduled for Feb. 26, (Sat.) at FENCE house or we can make special arrangements for you to train individually. Please contact us if you and/or your horse want to be a part of this special and rewarding program.

A Note from

           NC Horse Protection Society

Editor's Note:  Although the state's Horse Protection Society is in the piedmont, it serves the whole state. Joan Benson serves as its Executive Director and there is no one better at what she does.

HPS has received another $10,000 grant to aid in the construction of the Training Arena. We now have $41,900 towards the needed $68,500.  We are in need of only $26,600.... we are more than half way to the funds we need.  Please help HPS raise the rest of the needed funds.  Any amount is greatly appreciated.

USEF Rules:

                 Helmets Required

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) issued a notice to equestrian competitors in Dressage and Eventing for the 2011 horse show season and beyond. Approved equestrian safety helmets will be required in considerably more horseback riding competitions, even at the top levels.  Tighter restrictions on the use of equestrian safety helmets were passed by the USEF board of directors during the USEF's 2011 Annual Meeting, held in Lexington, Kentucky, January 19-23.

Commented David O'Connor, USEF president,  "I am very proud of our organization for taking this very important step.  It is a huge direction of change."

Basically, the new USEF rulings are twofold:

  1. The first new rule, effective immediately, insists that all horseback riders wear ASTM/SEI-approved safety helmets while mounted on competition grounds at nationally rated equestrian Eventing competitions in the United States.
  2. The second new USEF rule, effective March 1, 2011, applies to horseback riders under age 18, who participate in upper-level Dressage (pertaining to the FEI levels - from Prix St. George through Grand Prix). These younger equestrians will now be required to wear ASTM/SEI-approved safety helmets for competition.

Hallelujah!

"Buck" Touches the Toughest Critics at Sundance Film Festival

Buck Brannaman

From film critic Betsy  Sharkey  (LA Times):

Reporting from Park City, Utah -- Sometimes a film comes along that answers a question that you didn't realize you had. At the Sundance Film Festival this year, that movie is "Buck," an exceptional slice of Americana about the charismatic real-life horse whisperer, an earthy, soft-spoken philosopher who can tame troubled souls, be they man or beast.
