It's Awards Season again. What else are you going to do in the coldest, most depressing months of the year? In most living rooms, channels are turned to the long parade of Hollywood awards shows - the People's Choice Awards, Emmys, Academy Awards, Tony's, Screen Actors Guild Awards and on and on. For horse folks, it's also the season of horse awards shows. Last weekend in Camden was the SCTOBA Awards, which was fun. Locally FRC held their Winter Doldrums Party and gave out their awards. The Eclipse Awards dubbed Zenyatta as the 2010 Horse of the Year- the second year that a female horse has beat the boys. It warms my little feminist heart. The USEF, that oversees eight disciplines, named a reining horse, Gunners Special Nite, as their top pick. He was the only Team USA multiple winner at this year's WEG. I'd like to say that reining is the fastest growing equine sport in the country, but checking my facts, I found references stating that (Mounted Cowboy Shooting, Endurance, Combined Driving, Team Penning , Dressage--Pick one) was the fastest growing US equine sport. Who knew? Libbie Johnson |

A Word of Caution
In the barn, its easy to be in a hurry and leave something out. Dogs are very suseptable to getting into bute and banamine that is left out, especially with those with added flavoring. Collie breeds are also very sensitive to Ivermectin. Don't put your smaller animals at risk-lock up your equine meds. While we're talking about caution, be aware that western North Carolina and the upstate of SC have quite a list of toxic plants to horses. Polk County's agriculture extension service has a web page with these poisonous plants. Check it out.

USEF Horse of the Year Gunners Special Nite
Winner of two gold medals at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), Gunners Special Nite was named 2010 Horse of the Year by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) on January 21st. Gunners Special Nite, a six-year-old chestnut American Quarter Horse stallion, is owned by Sarah B. Willeman. Photo credit: Nan Rawlins Gunners Special Nite wowed audiences at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), held in Lexington, Kentucky earlier in the fall. Ridden by reiner Tom McCutcheon (also named USEF Equestrian of the Year), the stallion contributed to the U.S. team gold medal in Reining and also preceded to win the Individual Championship in Reining as well. Gunners Special Nite was Team USA's only multiple gold medal winner at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG). |
Zenyatta Grabs Eclipse Awards Horse of the Year
As she heads for retirement at Lanes End Farm, Zenyatta will probably be remembered as the greatest female Thoroughbred race horse of all time, almost (19-1) being undefeated for her career. Zenyatta now adds the biggest honor of her career- 2010 Horse of the Year. It's the second year in a row a female horse has won the industry's top award - Rachel Alexandra beat out Zenyatta for the honor last year. The 6 year old mare tied the great Cigar (1996) as the oldest horses to win Horse of the Year. Her owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, and the Zenyatta team accepted the Eclipse Award on Monday night during ceremonies in Miami Beach. Zenyatta edged out 4-year-old colt Blame, who defeated the hard-charging mare by a nose in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs last November in the final race for both horses. Blame, by the way is also a hands down champion, and was trained in South Carolina at Jane Dunn's Holly Hill Training Center. Read the rest of the Eclipse Award winners |

Foothills Humane Society Celebrates Hallmark Year
The Foothills Humane Society has plenty to celebrate with the closing of 2010. Our Humane Society announced a 98.7% live release rate, (which means adoption, return to owners, sent to rescues or still living at the shelter) of otherwise doomed animals. It took the dedication of a superb staff, 200 active volunteers, 6,000 volunteer hours, a $400,000 budget, generous vets, and creative programs like Po Kitties, the Chicken Soup Fund, Lennie's Kids, foster families,a crackerjack Animal Control officer ....and a supportive community. That's you. We can't say it officially yet, but these numbers are more than likely the best in the country.Celebrate your commitment to No More Homeless Pets by sending TWITHC a picture of you and your shelter adopted pet. Let the world know you are part of the solution. (Remember the saying? You're either part of the solution or....you're part of the problem). Its a tall order, but let's keep the momentum going. Become a member of FHS by sending in a donation (any amount). Want to see more about how the FHS reached a 98.7% success rate? Click here.

Who Is It?
Here's Deb Schmitz of Green Creek on Chili Pepper, her first horse. In this snapshot, taken in 1951, Deb is about 4 years old and Pepper is 6 or 7. Pepper would prove to be one of those "horse of a lifetime" doing whatever was asked of him- trail riding, fox hunting, jumping, pulling a cart. She rode Chili Pepper until she left for college. Deb's love of horses has been a life long passion. Today her farm is home to six very pampered best friends.
We're looking for vintage photos. Please send us a photo of you as a child/teen on a horse or pony pre-1970.
