Kim Allen on Candy

Julio Diamante I was sad to read this week that Col. Chuck Ross passed away over Christmas.  I didn't know Col. Ross personally, but I certainly knew who he was. Or, I thought I did. When I read his obit, I was surprised at just how involved he was in  Tryon's  horse scene and how instrumental he was in shaping the horse community that you and I enjoy today.  Chuck, as he was known,  served as the master and huntsman of the Ft. Leavenworth Hunt, president of the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, field master of the Greenville County Hounds, chairman of the Block House Steeplechase, and technical delegate for the US Combined Training Association.  His contributions will be felt for many years to come.

Some really good news came from the Foothills Humane Society this week. As it turns out, all their many programs to reduce the numbers of homeless pets  are paying off with enviable dividends for our animals. They announced a 98.7% live release rate for 2010, which is probably the best in the country. Those are some braggin' rights there, folks.

Foothills Humane Society Celebrates Hallmark Year
The Foothills Humane Society has plenty to celebrate with the closing of 2010.  Our Humane Society announced a 98.7% live release rate, (which means adoption, return to owners, sent to rescues or still living at the shelter)  of otherwise doomed animals. It took the dedication of  a superb staff, 200 active volunteers, 6,000 volunteer hours, a $400,000 budget, generous vets, and creative programs like Po Kitties, the Chicken Soup Fund, Lennie's Kids, foster families,a crackerjack Animal Control officer ....and a supportive community. That's you.  We can't say it officially yet, but these numbers are more than likely the best in the country.

Celebrate your commitment to No More Homeless Pets by sending TWITHC a picture of you and your shelter adopted pet. Let the world know you are part of the solution. (Remember the saying?  You're either part of the solution or....you're part of the problem).

Its a tall order, but let's keep the momentum going. Become a member of FHS by sending in a donation (any amount). Want to see more about how the FHS reached a 98.7% success rate?   Click here.

First Baby of the Year...
First FoalThe first foal of the year at the Clay family's Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky, was born at 7:20 p.m. EST on New Year's Day. The foal is a strong, healthy filly by Sky Mesa out of the winning Menifee mare Coded Princess. Both mother and foal are owned by Green Hills Farm. January 1 is the official birthday of all Thoroughbreds in the Northern Hemisphere, regardless of their actual date of birth.

Jennifer is the wife of Tryon Hounds huntsman, Jordan Hicks.

Champion Saddlebred Euthanized at KHP
Gypsy Supreme
Editor's Note: Since this first ran last week, we've learned that  Harrison Shiflet's sister-in-law Jill Sando-Shiflet rode the great Gypsy Supreme to several World Championships,  "Great", because....Gypsy gave 100% effort everyday and enjoyed the show competitions as much as his riders did.  He deserves the title.

The Kentucky Horse Park announced the death of nine-time World's Champion CH Gypsy Supreme, an American Saddlebred show horse who lived in the park's Hall of Champions since 2001.
He was humanely euthanized on the morning of Wednesday, December 22, surrounded by people
who loved him, after a long battle with laminitis as a result of Cushings disease.
John Nicholson, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park, said, "Gypsy was an outstanding representative of his breed in our Hall of Champions, but beyond that, he was a cherished member of our park family.   The Saddlebred world has lost a great show horse, his fans have lost a legend, and our park has lost a fine friend."
He was one of the most photographed horses at the Kentucky Horse Park, because his stall was near the walkway to the Hall of Champions, and he spent a large part of each day with his head out of the window, welcoming visitors as they arrived.
CH Gypsy Supreme has been buried at the Hall of Champions in a place of honor near other Saddlebreds CH Imperator, CH Skywatch, and CH Wild-Eyed and Wicked.

Twin Oaks Veterinary Introduces  New Diagnostic Equipment

Twin Oaks Vetinary  offers  horse owners new advances in diagnostics with the new FLIR Thermography Camera.  Dr. Sean Eastman will offer Saddle Fittings using State-of-the-Art Infrared Technology to determine if your current saddle is pinching your horse's back.

thermography1Thermography2

The images above are of a 12 yr old QH Mare who was showing dry spots under the saddle after a work-out. The image on the Left is of her back before the work-out. Notice a pretty uniform heat signature over the entire back. The image on the Right is of the same horse after a 15 minute work-out. Notice over the withers the blue/green spots on both sides of the withers, more so on the Left side of the withers. The blue spots indicate no blood flow, hence the sweat glands cannot function, hence, the horse is not comfortable.

For a state of the art saddle fitting on your horse, please call the Twin Oaks office at 864-895-8091 to schedule your appointment today.

Who Is It?
Kim Allen on Candy
Kim Allen was 8 years old and  living in Travelers Rest S.C. when this picture was taken on her first pony Candy.
"I got my first pony when I was 6 yrs old.  Its looks like I gave her a bad hair cut. I loved my pony so much -she was a trusted friend for many years until I out grew her. On my 13th Birthday my parents  bought me a wonderful quarter Horse that I kept until I married in 1982.  I have a 16 yr daughter that shares the love of horse's also. We purchased her a horse about 4 years ago.  Then Christmas a year ago I could no longer just watch her I had to have a horse of my own again. so after 27 years of not having horse's in my life I now own a  wonderful 4 yr old quarter horse Cayenne. I thought at the age of 50 I might be to old to start riding again  but it was just like riding a bike. I have even got up the nerve to start jumping. And to top it off I found my riding teacher (Sherry Traynham) after 45 years and she is still teaching lessons and owns  the Cross Country Farms in Laurens where we board our  horses. She is still taking children to shows at FENCE.  I may not move like I used to but my heart and mind run with the wind."
You Go, Girl!
