Art in the Garden VII  - AN EVENING OF MOTOWN
Last Day to Buy Tickets - Thurs. Oct 4AITG VII Poster
Friday, October 5, 7:00 pm

Join us on Friday, October 5, for Art in the Garden VII, as we recreate the sounds of the 60's and 70's with our special guests...The Total Package. This 9-piece band from Atlanta has played all over the world, backing William Bell of Beach Music fame.  There'll be dinner and drinks, an opportunity to view and purchase artwork from local artists, and a silent auction, all to raise money for Lexington Interfaith Community Services (www.licssc.org). Tickets are on sale at Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center, First Community Bank's Lexington Location only, Palmetto Wine & Spirits at The Flight Deck, and on our website wingardsnursery.com. We are delighted to have our friend, Tony Clyburn, of b106.7, back as the emcee.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

This year's gourmet dinner will be provided by Belly's Southern Pride, of Lexington.  The killer menu will be: roast beef sliders, crab roll ups, smoked chicken salad, smoked salmon, assorted fruits, cheeses and vegetables, gourmet deviled eggs, bruschetta, a delicious dessert, and beer, wine, soft drinks and water!  Your $40 admission includes all of this!

CAMELLIAS AND SASANQUAS ARE HERE!

CamelliaWe carry the largest selection of camellias and sasanquas of any garden center in the Midlands, and our new shipment just arrived.  These fall and winter-blooming shrubs are an essential for the Southern landscape.  Their dark green, glossy, evergreen foliage holds up beautifully in the the heat of summer as well as the cold of winter.  The flowers are just an added benefit!

Plant camellias (camellia japonica) in full shade or morning sun/afternoon shade.  Sasanquas (camellia sasanqua) may be planted in full sun or shade.

For a list of varieties that we carry, click here.

For more information about caring for Camellias from the American Camellia Society, click here.

DAFFODILS - First Sign of Spring!

Daffodil BulbsMy grandmother's yard was full of yellow daffodils.  When I saw them bloom each year, I knew winter was almost over, and summer was just around the corner.  If you want daffodils to greet you as the first sign of spring next year, you have to plant them now!

We just received a load of daffodil bulbs that will know your socks off.  Many different varieties, all of which will grow well in our climate.  You'll find them in the "Garden Room" in the Gift Shoppe.
Daffodils in Container
Plant them in the ground or in a container!

PLANT YOUR OWN SALAD BOWL

Salad BowlIf you love fresh lettuce in your salad, you can't get any fresher than this:  Plant a variety of lettuces in a container. Put it in a sunny spot outside your kitchen. When you get ready to make your salad, just go outside and snip, snip.  The lettuce will keep growing all winter long.

We have a variety of lettuces:  California Mix, Red Sails, Spicy Mescluen, Green Star, Red Fire, and Romaine.

ROSE CREEK ABELIA - A FALL SHOWOFF

Rose Creek Abelia at Kathy's house

There are two varieties of low-growing abelia (3' X 3') which have become very popular in the last few years:  Rose Creek (glossy green leaves with a tint of golden in the green) and Kaleidoscope (gold/red/white variegated leaves with red stems).  They both bloom in late summer, early fall and keep their leaves year-round.  Here's a picture of Rose Creek Abelia planted in one of our employee's (Kathy Torres) landscape.  The abelia form the border in the front of the bed.

FALL FRAGRANCE
Fragrant Tea Olive
Fragrant Tea Olive

Fragrant tea olives have been blooming recently.  This is another  must-have in the Southern Landscape.  Take one whiff and you'll be convinced!

Eleagnus
Eleagnus (Russian Olive)
As the tea olives finish blooming, the eleagnus (aka russian olive) pick up where they left off.  This is an underappreciated shrub in my opinion.  It is hardy, grows fast, makes a great hedge, has an unusual silvery color, keeps out unwanted critters with its thorns, and smells great in the Fall.  Click here to learn more about this fragrant shrub.

PRE-EMERGENT - apply twice a year
Hi Yield Weed & Grass Stopper

If you haven't applied pre-emergent to your lawn or landscape beds, you need to do it right away to prevent winter weeds.   It is recommended that you apply by the end of September (or you could stretch it to first week of October).  Next application should go down in February.

We recommend Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper with Dimension.
PLANT INSURANCE

Fertilome Root Stimulator Use a "root stimulator" every time you plant trees, shrubs, roses, annuals and perennials, you to stimulate early root formation and stronger root development. It also reduces transplant shock and promotes greener, more vigorous plants.

We recommend Fertilome Root Stimulator and Plant Starter Solution.

DFrozen FountainON'T LET YOUR FOUNTAIN FREEZE THIS WINTER
