It's almost Mother's Day again!  This weekend is always the peak of our prime selling season.  That's why we call the Saturday before Mother's Day MAMAPALOOZA DAY at Wingard's.  This year, we're trying a few new twists on the day, so keep reading to see what we have up our sleeve!  It's also the season of garden tours.  You can see a lot by going to the Riverbanks Botanical Garden, or The Biltmore House in Asheville, or Middleton Place outside Charleston.  But my favorite garden tours are of "real" people's homes.  We have three different tours listed in this newsletter where you can go to people's houses and just look around the yard and see how they did it.  For the most part, these gardens are owned by "just plain folks" who love gardening.  They are a great inspiration for all of us.

DON'T WANT TO WATER?  PLANT YUCCA!
Red Yucca
Hesperaloe "Red Yucca"
A great plant for a dry, full sun location is yucca.  We carry several varieties, one of which is blooming right now in the bed next to our North Lake Drive entrance.  The Hesperaloe gets it's common name, "Red Yucca" because it puts up tall spikes of red flowers that remain in bloom for a few months.  The hummingbirds love it.  And, there's no need to water!

YOU SAY KLEM-ah-tiss, I SAY klem-MATT-tiss

BUT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT TYPE 1, TYPE 2 OR TYPE 3
CLEMATIS?

Yes, there are three types of clematis.  Type 1 bloom early and only on growth produced in the previous year.  These clematis should only be pruned right after bloom, so as not to cut off next year's blooms.
Type 2 bloom on old and new growth, so "repeat blooming" is common.  Type 3 bloom only on new growth, so it is best to prune these clematis back to 12-14" when completely dormant in late winter.

For more information on pruning your clematis, go to gardenweb.com .
Jackmanii Clematis
Jackmanii Clematis
Last year, when I toured gardens in England, I was taken by the frequent use of clematis.  They place a pyramidal trellis in the middle of a flowerbed and grow a clematis on it, for height.  They were really stunning.  My friend, Carolyn, who has created wonderful gardens in small spaces, likes to use other plants as supports for her clematis.  She often grows a clematis on a hybrid tea rose, for a combination of color.

Our selection of clematis at Wingard's has typically been limited.  But after my experience last year in England, we decided to bring in a large inventory this year.  We stocked limited quantities of 18 different varieties:  Arabella, Belle of Woking, Dawn, Empress, Ernest Markham, Filagree, Franziska Maria, H.F. Young, Ice Blue, Jackmanii, Josephine, Kilian Donahue, Liberation, Multi Blue, Natascha, niobe, Pink Fantasy, and The President.

By the way, the American Clematis Society says the correct pronunciation is CLEM-uh-tis.

ANOTHER Bonsai 1BONSAI WORKSHOP

Saturday, May 14

9:00 - 11:30 am

Chip Dutton, local Bonsai enthusiast and expert, will spend about 45 minutes talking about beginner bonsai techniques.  After a short break, he will take a plant from our nursery stock and actually "style" a bonsai.  He'll explain the "hows and whys" of designing a bonsai plant as he goes.  One lucky workshop attendee's name will be drawn to take home Chip's ready-made bonsai at the end of the workshop.  Admission is $25 and you will receive a $10 gift certificate good for purchase of bonsai products (books, wire, pots, soil, clippers) that day.  Click here to register on-line, or call 803-359-9091.  Have your credit card handy!

Lexington County Master Gardeners 10th Annual Garden Tour - May 26, 28, 29

This tour will feature seven Midlands' gardens and Big Moon Farm.  Experience the wonder of Big Moon Farm, where fragrant herbs mingle with the cackles of hens laying fresh eggs while cattle graze nearby. Learn the true meaning of 'eating local' at this local CSA farm (community supported agriculture).

Big Moon Farm

Two gardens on tour are in Gilbert, on Lake Murray, and are distinctive for their lushly landscaped pools! One is surrounded by hostas, and hydrangeas, and beckons wildlife with multiple birdhouses. The other has a gradual entry pool surrounded by lush, tropical landscaping, and a courtyard fountain. This garden has many examples of artistic stonework.

In a Lexington garden, owned by an artist and Master Gardener, you will find yourself surrounded by whimsical garden creatures living in harmony with the perennials and annual filled containers.

Enjoy an oasis in Woodcreek where sun loving perennials abound in the front yard, while the backyard is a shade lover's paradise. Hostas, ivy, and azaleas surround numerous water features, including a stacked rock waterfall. Follow the tour on to West Columbia where there are three gardens owned by our own Master Gardeners. One of these is home to many native species as well as charming mountain laurel which is rarely found in Columbia.

We ran a Special on Japanese Maples

last month where we discounted each tree 40%

and pledged to give $10 per Japanese Maple Tree sold, at regular or discounted price, to  American Red Cross

to assist victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  Since that time, tornadoes have destroyed many communities in the United States.  So we decided not to designate the donation and allow the Red Cross to use the funds where they are most needed.

Based on your overwhelming response,

we are donating $600 for disaster relief!

THANK YOU!

It's hard to believe we're in our sixth Spring as garden center owners.  I'm beginning to understand how owning your own business is like having another child.  It takes a lot of time and effort, but it never ceases to amaze you.  We have watched this business grow and mature as we nurtured our new ideas and passions.  We've had a lot of help along the way, from my parents who provided such a great foundation for us, to my sister who developed a fabulous gift shop, to our customers who gave us great ideas and kept us grounded, to our friends in the nursery and garden center industry from whom we shamelessly stole many ideas.  Most importantly, we want to thank our employees, who really deserve all the credit for putting up with us and working so hard, especially in the Spring.  It's because of them that we can confidently say,

There's Always Something Blooming At Wingard's!
