First we had Black Friday, then came Cyber Monday. Now we have Small Business Saturday! American Express and the Mayor of New York City came up with this new "Day" to encourage folks to shop at local, small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I didn't really appreciate the role of small business in a community until I owned one myself. For every year over the last decade, 60-80% of new jobs were generated by small businesses; 68% of money spent with local businesses stays in the community! Wally and I find ourselves frequenting locally owned businesses whenever possible. We'll even drive out of the way to do so. These are the businesses that are committed to our community; these are the people who take the risks involved in owning a business; these are the businesses who keep their employees working as long as possible during a recession, because they're like family. Shopping at local businesses is just plain good for the local economy. Thank you for making our small business your garden center of choice! We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this community and a part of your life! |

CHRISTMAS TREES ARE HERE!
As of this writing, we still have a good supply of premium Fraser Fir trees and wreaths, but they're going fast! And, as usual, you can pick your own Leyland Cypress from our tree lot by Pilgrim Church, and we'll dig or cut it for you. Want some greenery for decorations? Since we cut a few branches off the bottom of each tree we sell, we have plenty of trimmings you can have for FREE! And we'll give you a free bottle of "Keep it Green" tree preservative to add to your tree's water bowl to help it hold the needles all season.

VARIETY OF COLORS AND STYLES
Need help? We'll deliver, put the tree in your stand, and bring it into your house for $50.00

STEEDS HOLLY
| | Steeds Holly |
Looking for a cone-shaped plant to put in a container by your front door? We recommend Steeds Japanese Holly. It is very hardy and can be planted in your landscape once it outgrows the pot. Many of the little Christmas-tree looking plants that you are seeing at the big-box stores right now are not acclimated to this climate and will not grow very well here. The Steeds Holly has a natural conical formation and stays nice and compact with just a little pruning once or twice a year. We have plenty of them in stock (and pots to put them in, too!).

CUTTING BACK PERENNIALS AND DECIDUOUS SHRUBS
Many of your perennials will die back this month and your deciduous shrubs and trees will lose their leaves. When do you cut them back and clean them up?
HERBACEOUS PERENNIALS - When a plant is called herbaceous, it means that the stems are soft or succulent and green, as opposed to brown and woody. Generally soft, green, herbaceous growth will die back to the ground in cold, winter climates. The roots of the perennial plant are alive and well and new growth will emerge in the spring. Examples would be daylilies, coneflowers, daisies, salvia, black-eyed susan, hosta, etc. Cut these back to the ground when the plant totally dies back. Clean away the dead material and apply fresh mulch. If some of the plant is still green in January, it is a good idea to cut it back anyway.
WOODY PERENNIALS - These are plants that grow woody, brown stems and are evergreen in areas where they are hardy but get killed to the ground in areas where winter's cold kills the stems. Examples are lantana, verbena, mums, angel trumpet, confederate rose, and perennial hibiscus.. We recommend letting these die back but not cutting the dead limbs until new growth appears in the Spring. When you cut these back early, water collects in the fresh cut of the stem and freezes the plant. We made this mistake last year and killed our gorgeous angel trumpet that resides at the corner of the straw shed. We won'd do that again to the new one we planted this year.
ROSES - Prune shrub and hybrid tea roses (including knockouts) severely in February, before Valentines Day. Prune climbers less radically, to maintain the long, running stems.
HYDRANGEAS - Most varieties bloom on old growth, so if you prune before spring you'll be preventing new flowers from forming for next year. Some varieties bloom on old and new growth and can be pruned anytime, but wait until new growth starts to appear in the Spring. Some of the varieties that can be pruned in early Spring are any of the Paniculatas (such as Limelight, PeeGee, Tardiva) and Annabelle.
CRAPE MYRTLES - We recommend on light pruning to remove seed pods and shaping, not chopping off the entire top of the tree. This can be done any time between now and end of January.
FORSYTHIA (YELLOW BELLS) - Prune severely right AFTER it blooms in early spring.
BUTTERFLY BUSHES - Wait until mid- to late-February to prune an overgrown bush severely.

LAKE MURRAY ORNAMENTS
BOMB ISLAND, LAKE MURRAY, 2010 - During WWII, an island in the middle of the lake, now known as Bomb Island, was used by B25 Bomber pilots for target practice. Our 2010 ornament honors and remembers our WWII veterans and the role of Lake Murray in these training missions. The B25 on the ornament is a replica of the bomber that crashed into the lake and was floated to the surface in 2005.
PURPLE MARTINS, LAKE MURRAY, 2009 - On any summer evening, boaters are awed by the dance of thousands of Purple Martins that fill the sky over Bomb Island on Lake Murray. This 2009 ornament, second in the series, illustrates this amazing spectacle.
LAKE MURRAY TOWERS, 2007-2008 - As one drives across the Lake Murray Dam, the view is of the five hydroelectric intake towers, watercraft, and awesome sunsets. This introductory ornament, which was first offered in 2007 and then again in 2008, depicts these views commonly associated with the Lake.
