A friend gave me a gift years ago. It was a ceramic cross that sits on an easel. On the cross, the following words are inscribed: "One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth." It has always had special meaning to me. I "googled" it today and found that it is a line from a poem by American poetress Dorothy Frances Gurney. Click on the author's name to read it -- the entire poem is even better than the one-liner. I must admit, I am a sucker for garden art displaying meaningful quotations. I gave my husband a plaque with a big tree that quotes Robert Browning's poem, "Grow Old Along With Me, The Best Is Yet To Be." And, I gave my mom a heart shaped stone for her garden on Mother's Day with two verses of a poem from an unknown author, "My mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart. She planted all the good things that gave my life its start. I am my Mother's garden,
I am her legacy. And I hope today she feels the love, reflected back from me." And, finally, for Father's Day, I'm going to give my dad the stone pictured here with a Thomas Jefferson quote. For those of you who know Mr. Jut, doesn't that suit him just perfectly?

WINGARD'S OWN DAYLILIES
128 SPECTACULAR VARIETIES
TO CHOOSE FROM
We are fortunate to have my sister Gail's American Hemerocallis Society Garden right behind the nursery. We are even more fortunate to be the recipient of all of her extra daylilies when she divides them in the Fall.
Siloam Bo Peep |
We sell only those daylilies that are grown in Gail's Secluded Gardens, which is certified as meeting the standards of the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS). Her daylilies are all registered by AHS. Almost all of our daylilies are repeat bloomers, and will perform splendidly if you just
All American Windmill | plant them in full sun with good soil, give them plenty of water, and fertilize them once a year. Our daylilies have been produced by removing fans from original plants. This guarantees that they will be true to their name, and that their blooms will not deteriorate over time. We have planted all our daylilies in bigger pots this year. This means we are
Prickled Petals | offering larger plants, with more fans per plant, without raising prices. Daylilies grown from seed or from tissue culture (cutting a plant into small pieces to mass produce) will often put out flowers that are not true to the parent. Many of you ask for "Red Stella" or "Purple Stella". We do not carry these daylilies because they are not registered by AHS, and they are mass produced, which leads to inconsistent flowering. We do carry the popular Stella de Oro (short, dark yellow), because it is registered with the AHS.

PLENTY OF PRETTY PERENNIALS
Attract Butterflies & Hummingbirds
When we talk about perennials, we usually mean plants that love sun, flower at some point Spring, Summer or Fall, die back in the winter, and return as an even bigger and better plant the next spring, ready to start the cycle again. Most perennials have a strong bloom period for a few weeks and then either stop blooming or bloom sporadically until frost. It is best to plant a variety of perennials with blooming periods which peak at different times. Butterflies and hummingbirds will be drawn to your garden, as you have something blooming all season long.
Big Sky Sunset |
Coneflowers (echinacea) are the hottest perennial this year. There are so many new varieties, with beautiful colors. We have Green Jewel, Big Sky Sunset, Hot Papaya, White Swan, Meringue, Prairie Splendor, Bravado, Coconut Lime, Kim's Knee High, and Harvest Moon, as well as the original purple conflower you may be familiar with.
Navaho Red Salvia |
Salvia (sage) is the largest genus in the mint family with some 900 species of annuals, perennials and soft-wooded shrubs, including culinary and medicinal herbs as well as garden ornamentals. Many outstanding South and Central American species have been brought into cultivation just since the 1980's. Salvia Macrophylla, Salvia Greggi, and Salvia Guaranitica are all very similar and are some of my favorites. They
Black & Blue Salvia | produce a mound (up to 4' X 3') of upright foliage, with small, but plentiful, flowers. We sell Desert Blaze (red with variegated foliage), Navaho Dark Purple, Navaho Bright Red, Black & Blue, and Hot Lips, to name a few.
Russian Sage is not even a type of salvia, but it has a similar growth habit and adds a beautiful blue "mist" to your garden. Drought tolerant, it will grow well in sandy soil. It gets its name from a 19th century Russian general. The botanical name for Russian Sage is perovskia atriplicifolia.

Goldenrod - I've always thought of goldenrod as a roadside weed. But I changed my mind after seeing the beautiful specimen that just arrived in the nursery and after reading the following excerpt from "Perennial Notes" by Paula Refi (1994): In one of life's romantic twists of fate, I found myself in England a few years ago falling
Golden Rod | head-over-heels for an American native plant. The plant was goldenrod (Solidago spp.). At Ness Gardens in Cheshire, I encountered a gargantuan border where tall clumps of goldenrod were planted at intervals. Its blossoms gleamed in the September sun and collectively they created a gilded thread that tied the entire bed together. Ornamental grasses, asters, and cardinal flower all provided additional color; however, it was the goldenrod, that autumn fixture of America's roadsides, which stole the show in this English landscape. Makes you want to run right out and plant some, doesn't it?
OTHER PERENNIALS JUST ARRIVED: Tutti Fruiti Agastache, Coreopsis, Gaura, Garden Phlox, Dwarf Mexican Petunia, Tall Mexican Petunia, Shasta Daisy, Perennial Hibiscus and many more....

HYDRANGEAS BLOOMING NOW
Now is the time to select a beautiful hydrangea for your garden. There are so many new varieties to choose from. We stock over 25 varieties. Here are just a few of my favorites:
DWARF PIA - This very compact deep pink mophead gets only 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide. It maintains its pink color in soil which would turn most hydrangeas blue. It is a macrophylla, so it needs afternoon shade or filtered sun in our South Carolina summers.
TWIST N SHOUT - This new Endless Summer variety sports a beautiful reblooming lacecap flower that will be either pink or blue, depending on your soil. One of its parents is 'Lady in Red' and the stems retain mom's deep red color. The glossy green foliage changes to red-burgundy in Fall. 3-4 feet tall and wide.
FUJI WATERFALL - Unusual bright-white lacecap blooms have double sepals that cascade over deep, dark tapered leaves giving a wonderful waterfall effect. Excellent for the shade garden, containers or as a border planting. 3-5 feet tall and wide.

MEYER LEMON TREES
When our Meyer Lemon Trees came in from California this Spring, they were really stressed from the trip. We've had them in "rehab" for a couple of months, and they are lookin' good. As of today, we have 5 of them left for sale. Lots of folks have been asking for them, so I'm sure they won't last long! Monrovia plants 5 gallon size Price: $50.99 |

Water, water, water - Even when it rains, you should check the soil around new plantings. The "digital moisture meter" works great. Take your finger (aka digit) and stick it down in the soil, all the way below the mulch, to see if the soil is wet or dry.
We will be closed on Sundays from Father's Day through Labor Day.
Roses are susceptible to insects and fungus. Use the Bayer All-in-One product to help prevent these problems. Just mix with water and apply to ground around the plant.
Deadhead your perennials and roses to encourage additional bloom.
Tomatomania contest starts in July. Keep an eye out for your largest tomato and bring it in next month to be measured. Winners receive gift certificates to Wingards.
If you planted your mums last fall, cut them back right now to one-third their size and fertilize. This will encourage them to form a tight bushy plant and set new buds that will bloom in the Fall.
