Sometimes I just have to stop, take a step back and look around our nursery to fully enjoy the beauty of it all. Today, I was looking for a plant to write about in this newsletter, and I was struck by how much color there is at this time of year! The sasanquas are blooming like crazy -- pinks, reds, whites. Nandina and pyracantha are full of orange berries. The hollies are sporting their red berries. There are still bright purple berries on the beautyberry bushes. The ornamental peppers are putting on a show. The bright yellow spray of the mahonia is bursting open. And, then there's always the reds, purples, blues and yellows of the pansies and violas. Even the encore azaleas are still blooming. The lack of frost has prolonged the season for some annuals and perennials. I saw some begonias blooming. And the angel trumpets, confederate rose and knockout roses are in full bloom. What a show!

MAHONIA X MEDIA "Winter Sun"
The mahonia is near the top of my list for really cool plants. First, it looks rather "wicked", almost prehistoric. While it's sticky leaves are similar to holly, the bush and leaf structure looks more like a nandina. In November/December (that's right now), it puts out sprays of bright yellow blooms that are very showy. And when the blooms dry up, deep bluish-purple berries appear. They are so big, they look like grapes. The mahonia is often commonly called "Oregon Grape."
Most varieties of mahonia are shade-loving. But "Winter Sun" is a newer variety that can be planted in sun or shade. It makes a great specimen plant, which is usually a singular plant that you want to draw attention to. We have a good stock of plants right now in 7 gallon plots for $54.99. They are about 4 feet tall, nice and full, and bursting with bloom. Eventually, this plant gets about 5-6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The smaller, 3 gallon size is $25.99.

How to keep your tree fresh ...
We always give your tree a fresh cut, so as soon as you get home put the base of the tree in warm water, even if you aren't ready to set it up yet. Warm water will absorb into the tree better. Also, we recommend drilling a three-inch hole in the base of the tree (vertically). This increases the surface area for better absorption. We can do that for you at the time we make the fresh cut, if you like. We also recommend adding a Christmas tree preservative to the water. Your tree purchase includes a complimentary bottle of "Keep-It-Green" for you to use. |

"PURPLE MARTINS ON LAKE MURRAY"
We have sold out of our first shipment. More ornaments are arriving December 8th.
Shop early so you don't miss out on this limited edition ornament. It's the second in a series designed and produced exclusively by Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center. |
Okay ladies .... Here' your chance.
Come in to the nursery and ask to make a Christmas Wish List. You identify the items you'd love to have - anything we sell can go on the list. Then send in your friends and family to buy them for you, especially any men in your life who have no clue how to shop. We'll help them select just the right thing for you. Because we are small and maintain a limited inventory (many items one-of-a-kind), there's no guarantee the items you choose will be available when he gets here. So, that's an incentive to get him to shop early!

We're developing an EMAIL SURVEY to ask you what you'd like to see at Wingard's. It'll be arriving in your inbox in January. Your feedback will be invaluable in planning our products and services, workshops and events, for 2010.

It's been a difficult year for many businesses around the country. More than ever, we thank you all so much for continuing to shop with us this year. We hope you have a healthy and happy holiday season. Remembering those less fortunate than us, please feel free to drop off canned and dry food donations for LICS at the nursery. There's always something blooming at Wingards!

Delores Wingard Steinhauser
