Wally and I visited lots of very nice garden centers this summer -- one in North Carolina and four in Ohio. We went to two industry trade shows, as well. We were like kids in a candy store -- so many good ideas to choose from. We wanted to adopt them all. We came home and told our employees all about our grand plans and showed them pictures of garden centers we wanted to emulate. Their reaction? "But that's not Wingard's!" Our employees really put us in our place by insisting we not lose the charm and ambiance that you all have grown to love. So we have spent the summer stuggling with how we can make our garden center more customer friendly, easier to shop, cleaner and less cluttered without losing the atmosphere. We came up with a statement that defines what we offer:
We want to present to our customers a welcoming environment in a park-like setting, which demonstrates how they can enjoy plants, flowers and garden art in their own homes.
All future changes will be done with that mission statement in mind. As I write this, a new patio area for fountains is being laid, a new covered area for pottery and birdbaths is under construction, we're enjoying a new irrigation system on our trees, drainage has been improved around the house, and we're building better displays for the daylilies and shade perennials. You can be sure these changes will mesh with that park-like setting you all expect to enjoy at Wingard's. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

SCARECROW BUILDING CONTEST - $100 PRIZE
Want to have fun, be creative, promote teamwork, and potentially win a $100 cash prize for your non-profit group? Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center is sponsoring a Scarecrow Building Contest for non-profit groups in the greater Columbia area during the month of October. We'll provide the frame and the hay; you provide the imagination, clothes and accessories. Bring your group to Wingard's and build your scarecrow here, or schedule an activity at your own meeting place. We'll display it at the nursery with a sign indicating your group's name until October 31.
On Saturday, October 31, we will announce the winning group during our celebration of "Hallow-Palooza Day" between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Wear your costume and enjoy a free hot dog and seasonal activities. We'd love for you to be part of our events on Oct. 31, but your group is not required to be here to win.
Give us a call at 359-9091 to sign up for the Scarecrow Building Contest. We will accept only 20 groups, so please call soon! If you prefer to build your scarecrow here, we will schedule a date and time.

I WANT A SUN-LOVING, LOW-GROWING, LOW-MAINTENANCE, EVERGREEN SHRUB THAT FLOWERS
How many times have I heard customers make this request? Dwarf sasanquas are the perfect solution. They generally get about 2-4 feet tall and wide, need very little pruning, and produce an abundance of red, pink, white or fuschia flowers usually in the late Fall. The foliage is a deep, glossy green and looks as good in winter as it does in summer. The one in the picture is the popular variety, Shishigashira.
Sasanquas are related to camellias. In fact, their official name is Camellia Sasanqua, and camellias' official name is Camellia Japonica.
Camellias generally bloom January - April, and need afternoon shade to thrive. Sasanquas generally bloom October - December, but there are some spring-blooming varieties. Sasanquas can grow in the sun or in the shade.
I found a great article in Southern Living that describes the positive attributes of the Sasanqua, as compared to the more popular Camellia. Click here to read it.
We offer one of the best selections of camellias and sasanquas in the South Carolina Midlands. A new shipment of about 300 plants will arrive in about a week or so, from Cam Too Camellia Nursery, just outside Greensboro, North Carolina. We find that Cam Too offers high quality stock, lots of variety, and good prices. You can read about their wholesale nursery at www.camtoocamellia.com . |

ANNOUNCING OUR 2009
LAKE MURRAY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT
CELEBRATING
"PURPLE MARTINS ON LAKE MURRAY"

Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center presents its 2009 Lake Murray ornament commemorating North America's first officially designated Purple Martin sanctuary. On any summer evening, boaters are awed by the dance of the thousands of Purple Martins that fill the sky over Bombing Range Island on Lake Murray. No one is sure why, but nearly one million Purple Martins come to roost on this island on Lake Murray in July and August before they migrate to South America for the winter. They fly out every morning at dawn, traveling as much as 125 miles away, before they return to the island every evening at sundown. This has become one of Lake Murray's major attractions, as dozens of boats converge around the island every evening to watch this amazing spectacle. Purple Martins are a member of the swallow family. Since their diet consists of flying insects, they are a welcome guest for people who live on or around Lake Murray. Many people construct Purple Martin houses (many times just clusters of gourds) to attract these birds and control mosquitoes. This exclusive, limited edition ornament, is one of only 250 made. It is the second in a series produced by Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center. If you missed out on the first ornament we produced in 2007, there are still a few available for sale. When I asked (electronically) my new-college-student daughter to be my "friend" on Facebook, she texted my cell phone, "Facebook friends? Really?" Yes, the sarcasm was coming through loud and clear. Sorry, Jordan, but your parents are entering the facebook/blog/texting/twitter world. I'm not quite sure why. I think it's just another way to let our customers know there's always something blooming at Wingards!
