LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM ~ Emily's Dream for Literacy
Guests: -- The Klitzka's were in attenance in full force. Also, Judy Slawny & Dave Quasius of Downtown, Tom Hartzell of Rotary West, and guest Mary Hayword.
UPDATES: Susie invited everyone to German Fest this coming weekend - an event NOT to be missed. President Tom informed the members that the Packer RafflE will NOT happen this year; thus thinking hats should be put on to replace that funding for scholarships. Member Alex Klitzka received special recognition as a new Paul Harris Fellow.
PROGRAM: Alex & daughter Emily gave a very moving presentation regarding Emily's (& the Kitzka family's) vision to help literacy and reading in the family setting. Emily passed around designs they created as a family to use on shirts, book bags, etc. They are working with both hospitals with a goal of giving a bag & books to each newborn's family. They are working in partnership with the Literacy Council and Family Resource Center to provideliteracy materials for the parents. Aurora has stepped up to do the printing of materials used. The goal is to be up and operating by February of 2012. What perfect timing - Valentine's love - love of reading - love of children - a child sitting on my lap enjoying a book.....the grandmother in my says "I'm there"! Many resources and connections were shared as potential partners in this project.
