LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM ~ Sheriff Todd Priebe
Guests: Peter Giese (proposed member by Ed Unger)
Sheriff Priebe shared how the focus has changed from addressing crime to instead doing proactive policing. Todd spoke of programs such as the quick $50 program in the schools and how in Sheboygan there has been a switch to community policing in the 72 neighborhoods of Sheboygan. The Sheriff's Department has identified 9 townships that they will begin building relationships in. They will go out meeting residents and holding town hall meetings identifying issues residents feel are important. Historically the officers were called on after the fact and building reports on what had occured. Residents historically were calling the police on their nieghbor rather than trying to settle issues among themselves. In the past townhall meetings have uncovered issues such as unsupervised children in neighborhoods in the city - which was different than what they expected to hear-problems like violence, drugs, etc. Sheriff Priebe looks forward to moving towards a goal of proactive civil solutitions. Officers will be encouraged to not wait to make an arrest but rather think outside the box and encourage residents to come to a civil solution. |
