Holy Cross quarterback and football team captain, Dominick Randolph, was profiled on October 3 in the Sports section of The New York Times. The article described not only Dom's hard work and positive attitude on the field, but also highlighted his leadership off-the-field through his relationship with Little Brother Franky.
Congratulations to Dominick and Franky -- we're proud to be able to call you our match! To read the full article, click here. |

The Rodman Ride for Kids 2009 |
On Saturday, September 26, BBBS participated in the 19th annual Rodman Ride for Kids. Our riders were easy to spot in their green shirts listing all the participating teams: Genzyme, The TJX Companies, Unum, the WPI Basketball Team and the Holy Cross Lacrosse Team, as well as Bigs and Littles, Board members and staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
To date we have collected over 75% of our goal of $80,000, but we're not done yet! Donations are being accepted until November 15, so make your donation today! Remember that the Rodman Ride Foundation matches 15% of every dollar raised, making every donation a great investment in Big Brothers Big Sisters.
If you want to learn more about this year's Ride, watch this Rodman Ride video on YouTube made by BBBS Board member Robert Hurley! Robert captured some great footage of the people, the road and the barbeque. You can also re-live the magic by viewing rider's photos our facebook group or Flickr site.
Big Brothers Big Sisters wants to congratulate our top fundraisers: Garry Weiner, Sal Guerra (our sole 100-mile rider) and Robert Hurley; thank all 78 of our riders, 32 of our volunteers (at Ride Headquarters and the BBBS Waterstop) and all of our donors for making this event special. We couldn't have done it without you! |
| Saying Thank You... |

BBBS has been fortunate to be the beneficiary of several grants since our fiscal year began in October. Thanks go to the Amelia Peabody Foundation ($35,000)for supporting our program in the Great Brook Valley area of Worcester; the Bank of America Charitable Foundation ($15,000); Liberty Mutual ($15,000) , for our school and site based programs; the Albert W. Rice Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, Trustee ($25,000), for our Worcester programs; and Unum ($15,000)for our mentoring program. These grants enable BBBS to provide Big Brothers and Big Sisters to hundreds of kids who would otherwise be without the one-on-one attention that every child needs. |

The WBJ's award, which recognizes up-and-coming leaders, has been presented every year since 2000.
Melanie has been with BBBS for nine years and has provided support and guidance for 500 matches between Big and Little Brothers and Sisters. She was a Big Sister herself three times for the past ten years and a Foster parent for eight months to a 12 year old boy.
When Melanie began at BBBS, there were fewer than 100 matches at the College of the Holy Cross, whose Lacrosse team and Student Program for Urban Development (SPUD) had initiated a relationship with BBBS. Since that time, Mel has established programs with Holy Cross soccer, baseball, football, field hockey teams and cheerleading. She also was responsible for initiating a program with Worcester Polytechnic Institute's fraternities and sororities, men's and women's basketball, track and field, as well as athletic teams at Clark University. These programs are now national models among BBBS affiliates around the country. Melanie is responsible for several other initiatives: Mentoring Children of Prisoners program, which she began three years ago; Girls CHOICE - a program created with the YWCA to foster long term mentoring relationships between professional women and middle and high school girls; and corporate programs with Unum, EMC, TJX, and Hanover. The Worcester Business Journal made a fine choice by selecting Melanie Perreault for its 2009 Forty Under Forty Award! |

And Saying Goodbye... |
Since 1970-something, Big Brothers Big Sisters' Worcester office has had the pleasure of working with Steve Crandall. Steve, who started programs all over Worcester and has interviewed more people than Barbara Walters, will be retiring at the end of this year.
Steve is most proud of the St. Johns program in Shrewsbury that he initiated 25 years ago. With over 150 matches between high school students at St. Johns and Littles from the area, Steve doesn't accept the stereotypic image of teenagers being self-centered. "When given the chance to give back, teens will exhibit a selflessness that contradicts these assumptions."
Steve was a Big Brother to 12 year old Ryan 20 years ago. Two years later, Steve adopted Ryan and he's been his dad ever since. Now 32 years old and married, Ryan looks forward to his father's retirement - he knows that Steve will be spending his time doing what he loves most: living in the woods where he can fish and kayak to his heart's content, and hang out with the wild Black bear who frequents his yard.
The board and staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters will pay tribute to Steve for his 30+ years of service at the Worcester Art Museum in November.
Thank you, Steve, for all the care and commitment you've given to so many children and adults for so many years!
