On The Move
| |
Congratulations to Kristen Carswell on her recent move from the Ranch to The Village. Kristen is entering her second year of employment as a lunchroom attendant with Clayton Elementary School, where she is well liked and appreciated by staff.
The move to The Village will offer Kristen a semi-independent lifestyle, but the opportunity comes with a need for increased personal responsibility, especially in the areas of daily living activities. Kristen has worked hard to demonstrate her readiness to step up to an increased level of independence, and we are very proud of her acheivement.

Health Initiative shows progress
Ranch residents with healthy body-mass indices increased 10 percent
Kyle Gaeta strikes a muscle man pose to show off his trimmer physique. Since he was placed on the Health Initiative Program early this year, Kyle has lost 43 pounds.
It was a New Year's resolution--of sorts. The beginning of 2011 saw the creation of a Health Initiative Committee at Marbridge that sought to place an even greater focus on tailoring diet and exercise programs for residents who needed to trim their waistlines. As the year winds down, signs of progress are beginning to appear.
"It is significant to note that the percentage of residents in the healthy BMI range went up 10% and now stands at 74.29% of all the Ranch residents," said Brian Haddock, director. "Kyle Gaeta is a real success story in that he started in the morbidly obese category and has dropped into the middle of the overweight category. And the best news is he's still losing." Among the Ranch population of 84 residents, 69 have lost weight since 2009, when changes in diet and exercise were first incorporated into the training & education course offerings for residents with weight problems.
At The Village, the percent of residents falling into the Recommended BMI category rose to 58.54% this year from 55% in 2008. The percent of overweight fell from 35% in 2008 to 32.93% today, and the percent of morbidly obese residents decreased from 6.67% in 2008 to 3.66% today.

Success at The Village

Family support helps Abby become one of Marbridge's "biggest losers" Resident trainer Savaughna Menefee, left, helps Abby retrieve a reduced-calorie frozen entree for her lunchtime meal.
Abby MacKinney is looking more and more like a contestant on the popular TV show "The Biggest Loser." It's a look that makes her proud. Ask her how much weight she has lost, and she quickly rattles off the number. At her last weigh-in, Abby had lost a total of 59 pounds since May 2010.
"Abby's success shows the impact that family support has on a resident's weight loss regimen. Her success to date has lot to do with the creative solutions devised by her mother, Donna MacKinney," said Sally Fletcher, director of The Village.
Mrs. MacKinney provided a sensor that fits on Abby's shoe and sends data to her iPhone to show Abby how many calories she burns as she participates in the daily iWalk program. The family also assists in helping Marbridge offer low calorie foods that Abby likes.

Villa staff "in the pink" They raised more than $350 to support breast cancer awareness October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all across the land women were weaving pink hair extensions into their tresses as a show of support. Each pink strand generated a $10 donation to the American Cancer Society. Women staff members at the Villa lined up in droves to "go pink." Employee Martha Balli's daughter, who is a hair stylist, provided the weaving services.
