An Inspiring Video

national anthem

Singing the national anthem at
Fenway Park

Godvine.com provides a forum for positive and inspirational stories, and this one tugged at our heart strings.

What do you think happens when an autistic man is invited to sing the national anthem at Fenway Park and begins to falter halfway through the song?

The audience response will amaze you. It's a testimony to how far we have come in gaining acceptance for adults with intellectual disabilities.

We're walking, yes indeed!
walkers

During the three-week break between spring and summer semesters, the iWalk program has cranked into high gear. Participating residents have logged more than 600 laps, which equals 300 miles! Four residents--Jane Baxter, Carrie Anderson, Tommy Klar and Ray Rust--have not missed a single day! Most residents have walked 25 to 45 laps, but some walked as many as 57 laps. Great job, everyone!

You know it's summer at Marbridge when...

We celebrate our anniversary--58 years!

Winning team

Members of the Stallions team celebrate a victory in the field day events.

Our anniversary celebration and field day is always great fun. We begin early to beat the heat, and everyone has a great time playing games, giving out awards and recognitions, and enjoying a cookout afterwards.

We gather for summer evening basketball scrimmages

basketball

Guys from the Ranch and The Village enjoy an evening of pick-up baseketball.

They begin gathering around 7pm, just as the sun begins to dip down toward the horizon. A boom box blares out music and the crowd grows and grows. Soon, two teams are mixing it up at the basketball goal down by the maintenance huts at the end of The Village. It's a blast.

Residents travel home for a summer break visit

Mark travels

Mark Hennelly travels by Amtrak to see his family.

Residents mostly travel by plane and automobile when visiting family, but Mark Hennelly prefers the train. He books a sleeper car and passes the time listening to music, napping and dining--all independently! He's a master of the rails!

New! Pre-Training Week

Third week of semester break provides opportunity for fun activities

movie nightTiffany Kirkpatrick and Luke Stenftenagel await the start of Summer Movie Night.

Kudos to community directors Sally Fletcher, The Village, and Brian Haddock, Ranch, for organizing Pre-Training Week in response to parent suggestions. The three-week break between semesters is a welcome change for the first two weeks, but by week three, the residents begin to get bored. Brian and Sally cooked up some great activities, including Summer Movie Night, iWalk/iBike exercise challenges, kickball games, swim times, bowling tournaments and even bat watching. Many thanks to Katherine Lehman, our volunteer coordinator, for rounding up the needed volunteers to help out with the various activities. Many thanks, too, to Jim and Lana Levins and the MPFA for sponsoring the Summer Dance and entertainment by a local magician. Our first-ever Summer Pre-Training Week was a great success!

Soooo cooooool!

Our pool is now open on the weekends!

Robert in pool

Robert Graham relaxes in the Marbridge pool.

Good news for residents who want a weekend way to beat the grueling Texas summer heat! The pool is now open on the weekends from 1pm to 4pm each Saturday and Sunday! Tara Hanson, who also works in direct care for the Village, will serve as a lifeguard.

Congratulations to local artist Kathleen Ash on being selected as one of Five Who Care by Austin television station KVUE. The station selects five individuals each year who best exemplify the spirit of volunteerism. Kathleen spends each Wednesday helping in Jan Meeks' art class. A professional artist, Kathleen owns Studio K Glass in Manchaca, where she creates works of art in glass. At Marbridge, she shows residents how to make beautiful ornaments and sun catchers out of glass.
