Intern Eric Pedrosa takes Villa residents around the globe through a weekly series called "Cultural Embrace"
The Villa dining hall takes on a different vibe each Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. That's when Eric Pedrosa transforms it into a giant tour bus-- complete with the sights, sounds and even tastes of far-off locales. Residents pack the room for their weekly trip, and Pedrosa makes sure they enjoy the ride. "I wanted to offer some cognitive therapy and help the residents exercise their brains," said Pedrosa, who is working toward a degree in recreation administration from Texas State. Residents learn about the geography of each country, and every travel experience includes information on the people--their culture, customs, traditions and food. Pedrosa has even brought samples of food served in the countries they visit! To date, the Villa residents have "traveled" to Australia, Puerto Rico, Sweden and Spain. |
Marbridge kicks it up at state equestrian competition

(L to R) front: Kenneth Jones, Daniel Hale, Audrey Andrews and Sylvia Hermes. In back, Max Clampitt and his horse, Carlos, are followed by Tom Raycraft and his horse, Sandy. They competed in the Western Equitation event as Coach Shonda McGarity paces the arena behind them.
This year, the Marbridge Equestrian Team sent more participants and entered more events at the Special Olympics State Summer Games than ever before. And did our team ever shine! For starters, Audrey Andrews was selected to carry the torch during the opening ceremonies. Then our 17 equestrian athletes displayed such excellent horsemanship and sportsmanship that they have been invited to attend the "Top Hand" show at the Houston Rodeo next spring!
The event was held at the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan/College Station the end of May with a full line-up of teams. The Marbridge team competed against 22 other equestrian groups from across the state. Undaunted, our team added the Working Trail to its line-up of competitive events. In this event, riders guide their horses through a variety of obstacles, including weaving through cones, walking over a bridge, backing through railroad ties and opening a gate while mounted. Through each event, the tenacious Marbridge equestrians proved they had the right stuff!
Many thanks to the volunteers who enabled us to participate in this important competition. Sandy Smith, Cheri Martin, Angie Smith and Cole Smith, along with staff members Mark Knox, Bryan Webb and Jana Kay deserve a round of applause. The Smith Family deserves extra thanks for the loan of their horse, Doc, to the team effort. Our equestrian instructor, Shonda McGarity, not only coached the team to victory, but also loaned her truck and horse trailer for this event as well as others throughout the spring. And an extra special "Thank You!" goes to Creed Ford, who has loaned his truck and trailer for all of our equestrian events and has also sponsored the Gold Stirrup Horse Show at Rodeo Austin where the team competed earlier this year. |
