Residents enjoy a fun day at Sea World!
Daniel Hale looks as if he's about to be jumped by a killer whale, but he's actually just taking a break in front of a statue at Sea World.
"Thirty-seven residents attended this outing on July 31 and had a HOT time in good ol' San Antonio!" said Shelley McGinnis, our coach/activity coordinator. "We watched shows, got SOAKED on water rides, and enjoyed everything Sea World had to offer."

Catholic Heart Workcamp gives our amphitheatre a fresh, new look
Volunteer young people from the Catholic Heart Workcamp recently completed a big project by repairing, painting and replacing worn-out benches at our amphitheatre. Through soaring temperatures and the occasional rain storm, five teenagers and their adult leader worked from 9am to 3pm for four days to get the job done.
Catholic Heart Workcamp brings youth from across the country together to complete projects in several cities each summer. While in Austin, individual teams of campers volunteered at 37 different work sites.
Thank you, Catholic Heart Workcamp! And thanks also go to our own maintenance team for their guidance throughout the project.

Villa soars through state survey with flying colors
Villa staff members Trish Arnold and Sandra Nevels celebrate with a hug after a long day with surveyors from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS).
Eight surveyors from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) arrived at 7:30am the morning of Friday, July 30, and for the next eight hours they poured over records, peeked into procedures, and prodded Villa staff for answers to a million questions. But after all was said and done, the state surveyors left the Villa more than satisfied with the care provided there.
"They looked into everything," said Steve Larson, director of the Villa. "It's a very intense review that covers everything from record keeping, to quality assurance, and to procedures that encompass every aspect of our operation--nursing, medications, infection control, dietary, environmental and maintenance--you name it." The review is called a "Full Book DADS licensing survey," and it occurs on an annual basis.
"Given the ever-increasing changes and monitoring of the many rules and regulations that the Villa staff must comply with, our results were outstanding," said Scott McAvoy, vice president of operations.
The lead surveyor's parting comment attests to what they saw during the review.
"You have a great home here, and your residents and families are all very happy. You should be proud. Keep up what you're doing."
Congratulations to all excellent Villa staff members on a job well done!

Word is getting out!
| The Bridges opens with good response

Village resident Ronnie Farrell became the second patient admitted to The Bridges Express Recovery Center. He needed a bit of time to recuperate from a foot injury. "I feel like I'm healing at home," he said of his stay at The Bridges. The six-bed center now has three additional patients and expects to fill up in the near future.

 by Peter Hubbell, MPFA president
The Marbridge Family Day program on June 12th was attended by approximately 60 parents and sponsors and was hosted by the Marbridge Parent Family Association(MPFA). The program included a "State of Marbridge" presentation from the senior management team.
James Stacy, President, recounted some of the history of Marbridge, past accomplishments and future goals, which include the replacement of the Winters dormitory, along with a review of architectural renderings. Discussion centered around projected time, financing and location. Scott McAvoy, vice president of operations, reported on the completed Village and explained the funding of it through the land sale of the old Mabee Village. Craig Wojtowicz, vice president of support services/controller, covered finances relating to the fiscal year ending in June, concluding operations would end on budget. Michelle Levy, vice president of development, covered the ongoing need for fund raising to supplement tuition expenses. A portion of the outreach strategy involves holding "JAM Sessions," monthly events that bring interested guests to campus to learn "Just About Marbridge."
Tom O'Brian, past chairman of the Marbridge Board of Trustees, explained the organization of the board, operations, and member qualification and the current objectives of the Board.
The program concluded with the introduction of Donna MacKinney, president-elect for 2011, by current president Peter Hubbell . Immediately following the program, attendees and residents enjoyed lunch at the iconic "Salt Lick" barbecue restaurant in Driftwood, about 20 minutes from Marbridge. Based on the positive response to the program, the MPFA will host another event next June 2011.
