Phillip Bunton Award Winner
| Brad Roark takes top honor at 2010 Sports Banquet
Kudos to Brad Roark for taking home the prestigious Phillip Bunton Award from the 2010 Marbridge Sports Banquet in mid-November. The award is presented annually to one outstanding athlete who embodies the ideals of sportmanship, determination and team spirit. The award was created in 2002 to commemorate Phillip Bunton, an active coach volunteer. His sister, Carolyn Robinson, presents the award in his behalf. Brad was recognized, in particular, for his dedication. He rarely misses a team practice, even after having worked all day.
Congratulations, Brad!

A victorious donation for Victory Hall! Austin Cops for Charities gives $10K to add momentum to fund-raising effort
Flanked by the Marbridge Longhorns basketball team and members of the Austin Police Department, Gary Manley, chair of the Victory Hall Dream Team Fund-raising Subcommittee, right, holds a check presented by Wuthipong Tantaksinanukij, left, chair of Austin Cops for Charities Board of Trustees. Standing in between the two is Ralph Wayne, member of the Austin Cops for Charities board, and vice chairman Gena Curtis. To the right of Manley is Tom Leyden, chair of the Victory Hall Dream Team. To the left of Tantaksinaukij is Officer Brent Kelly, a member of the Dream Team and the primary force behind the donation.
When Officer Brent Kelly took the idea of making a donation to help build a new gymnasium facility at Marbridge to his fellow officers, he had no idea the response would be so enthusiastic.
"I was amazed at how quickly and generously they responded," said Kelly. "It was an easy sale." Austin Cops for Charities is the community service arm of the Austin Police Association. The group seeks to support local charitable agencies, and they were impressed with the scope of the Victory Hall project, and with the residents of Marbridge.
"I have never been with a more courteous and entertaining group in my life," said Cops For Chairties Board Member Ralph Wayne. "They certainly made not only their great coach happy, but we were overwhelmed with their neat and contemporary athletic appearance, mature abilities and perfect conduct. They make anyone proud of them!" he said of the Marbridge Longhorns who attended a press conference to announce the donation.
The press conference on Dec. 2 officially kicked off the fund-raising effort for a planned 18,100-square-foot athletic and event center that will include a gymnasium, a stage area, an exercise center, classroom facilities and meeting rooms and staff offices. The press event was covered by KUT (see the story), and the Austin American Statesman (story).
"The donation from Austin Cops for Charities steps us through the front door of Victory Hall," said Gary Manley, chairman of the Marbridge Dream Team and an owner of the Iron Cactus Restaurants. "We have divided this project into many different pieces to provide a multitude of ways for individuals or groups to sponsor or donate to specific aspects. It's basically going to be like an old-fashioned barn raising, only we're calling it a 'Gym Raising.'"
