New Years is a Blast on Tybee Island!
Start the New Year off right by celebrating on Tybee... A beautiful fireworks show will light up the sky from the Tybee Pier at the stroke of midnight and many restaurants and night spots will offer live music.
On New Year's Day join in the Polar Bear Plunge. This annual event includes hundreds taking a plunge into the chilly Atlantic Ocean, some even wearing festive costumes. A lot of fun to watch even if you don't want to get wet!
This year make sure to officially register for the event. The cost is only $25.00 and you will receive an official Polar Bear Plunge T-Shirt along with a swim cap which will be used to try to break the Guiness Book of World Records for "Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swim Caps". The world record attempt will be held at 11:45am and the plunge at Noon. Make sure to arrive early to the Tybee Pier and be a part of this record setting event.

This is the way the Gaster women make squash on Tybee - or a slight variation depending on who's cookin'. None of us ever really follow recipes to precision or measure very well, but, I think this should work. Free feel to add ingredients as you like - like parmesan cheese or cracker crumbs on top. Can also use mixture of squash and zucchini or whatever looks good at the produce stand. A little Ms Dash is good too if you like that. Mom sautés her squash until it's squishy, while Carrie and I prefer it to still have some texture. Enjoy for Thanksgiving or any time you crave a homey meal!
Ingredients
1 tablespoon butter 10 medium yellow summer squash (about 2 lbs), sliced 1 large Vidalia onion, chopped 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar 1 cup milk 2 eggs 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions Sauté squash, and onion in butter until tender. Meanwhile, combine in large bowl milk, eggs, cheese, mustard, salt and pepper to taste (reserve ˝ cup of cheese to sprinkle on top). Add cooked squash to egg mixture and stir gently. Transfer to buttered casserole or 12 x 9 baking dish. Sprinkle remaining ˝ cup of the cheese and a little fresh ground pepper on top before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 45 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Enjoy! Amy, Carrie, and Bonnie Gaster
