Surviving Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene Thank you to all health centers who responded to the League requests for status updates throughout Irene's wrath and aftermath. We are happy to report that damages were minimal and all centers were restored to fully operational status just 4 days after the storm. As a reminder, Massachusetts was granted a presidential emergency declaration, be certain to maintain detailed financial records of any actions taken to mitigate the storm's impact, and expenses and losses as a result of the storm. Haiti SERG Initiative The Haiti earthquake disaster of January 12, 2010 had a significant impact in Massachusetts. It particularly affected several community health centers whose staff and patients are of Haitian descent. At the request of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), the the League assessed needs, acted as a liaison between health centers and MDPH, and disseminated timely and accurate information including a specific resource page on the League website. The League collaborated with MDPH to support health center and community-based efforts to those affected by the earthquake. In July 2011, Massachusetts was the recipient of funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), one of three national recipients, to continue efforts to address the mental health needs of those affected by the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. Together with the League, MDPH contracted with nine (9) community health centers serving Haitian and Haitian-American patients to continue this important endeavor to help the Massachusetts Haitian community to continue on the path of wellness and to thrive. As part of this initiative, BU Medical Center is providing a series of emergency response trainings with a focus on disaster relief. BU Medical Center has offered to open up these trainings to all health center staff that might be interested in attending. Please see more details under Disaster Relief Trainings.

National Mobilization Call-In Day: October 13
NACHC - The next call-in day will take place on Thursday, October 13. This is a critical day for Health Center supporters nationwide to unite with one voice to call upon Congress and the White House to protect our centers and the patients they serve. Together with NACHC, the League needs every health center advocate to take action! President Obama and Congressional leaders are currently considering proposals to address federal spending, some of which could literally ELIMINATE funding for the Health Centers Program or DRASTICALLY CUT critically important programs like Medicaid. Please plan to participate and generate widespread advocate participation to ensure that Congress and the White House receive our critical message. To learn how you can participate, click onto the Save Our CHCs website. NOTE: When you call your Congressional offices and the White House, the line might be busy because numerous Health Center Advocates are calling -- PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP -- keep calling until you get through! This Call-In Day is just one step in an ongoing series of actions Health Center Advocates need to take to make sure health centers maintain critical support and resources in the coming months. You can take further steps to help save our health centers:
- Share a link to National Mobilization Call-In Day instructions by email to all of your Health Center advocates: http://www.saveourchcs.org/mobilization-day.cfm
- Post information about the Call-In Day on Facebook: Please join me in supporting funding for our Community Health Centers and ensuring access to health care for everyone in our community by calling Congress and the White House on Thursday, October 13! RSVP here: http://on.fb.me/SaveCHCs_RSVP
- Post information about the Call-In Day on Twitter: I just RSVPd to call Congress and the @whitehouse on Oct 13 to #SaveCHCs! Please join me: http://on.fb.me/SaveCHCs_RSVP
The League continues to advocate for health center and Medicaid funding with members of Massachusetts' Congressional delegation. Thank you in advance for your strong commitment to Community Health Centers. Stay tuned for information about another mobilization call in November when advocates will be asked to take further action...
