Happy Father's Day to our dads and father-figures!
Elders' Corner
Our lives are fraught with anxieties.  We face difficulties daily that impact our lives in more and less ways.  While always looking for the steady rock that will help us cross the stream of life without slipping and falling, we pray that God will keep us and our loved ones safe, healthy, and financially secure.
Upon hearing of someone close to us who has experienced a death in the family, an unfaithful spouse, or the dreaded "C" word (cancer), our anxieties increase and we wonder if we will be able to escape these terrible and deadly experiences.
There are 365 references in the Bible about fear and the fact that we shouldn't be afraid.  So, as baptized Christians filled with the Holy Spirit, we expect that our faith will carry us through.  We feel guilty or confused when our fears and anxieties remain, even though we have prayed for peace.
As older people, we have experienced the loss of our parents through heart disease, cancer, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's disease.  We have had family members and close friends who have been unfaithful, committed suicide, abandoned their families, lost some or all of their children, or died horrible deaths.  We have fought in wars and experienced the affects of war on our friends and loved ones.  Each time, we have questioned the strength of our faith to carry us through.
So, what have Marilynn and I learned through all of these experiences?  I think we have learned that life isn't easy.  It has been a long and emotionally costly experience.  We are weak and fragile vessels.  We cannot create strength of faith from ourselves, it is from God Himself.  The thing that carries us through is God and His infinite presence.  Our faith is the fact that God has been there with us and continues to be here now. Our faith is in God's strength, not ours. When we "feel" weak and anxious, God is strong and standing by.  When we don't think we can make it through, He can take us through it all!
God is there with you.... Don't rely on your strength, it will let you down.  Rely on God. He is your strength and your guide.  Look for Him.
As David said in Psalms 73:26, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

International Initiatives
Laretta K. Shrader, Missions Minister
June and July are busy months for the International Outreach (Missions) ministry.  Here are a few of the exciting things that are happening:
     - June 12 & 13--the Kenya and Chile Teams were commissioned by the eldership following a moving parade of flags representing all the places where FCC is working.
     - Over 40 people came out in the middle of Monday afternoon to see the Kenya Team off.  They are scheduled to arrive in Nairobi at 2:45 pm Wednesday. Team members are Rick Keeling, Marcia Butler, and Kim and Charlie Kosmata.
     - The Chile Team leaves at 6 am on Thursday and will arrive in Chile early Friday morning.  Team members are Kevin Swearingin, Rene Botha, Nicole Burton, Jason and Sara Deming, Amber Hart, Isidro Lopez, Claudia Padilla, Alice Rhodes, Kroix Springer, and Amanda Stoermer.
     - Members of these two teams will be reporting to the church on June 26 & 27 and July 19 & 20
     - The debriefing for the two teams will be July 8 and July 10.
     - The entire teams will be hosting a thank-you service  (Fiesta/Shayrayhey) for all their supporters and the church community on July 24 at 6 pm.  There is a rumor there may be homemade ice cream.
     - Sue Robertson is home for a month for Jared's graduation from boot camp and to visit anyone who would like to take her out or have her at a small group.  She will be here until July 7.
Once the Kenya and Chile Teams are home, debriefed, and have reported to the church, we will move on to planning and recruiting members for the five teams we will be taking in October and November to Arizona Reservation Ministries in Globe to build a home for a family on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
Please keep all these happenings in your prayers.

Because He Lives, Laretta K. Shrader
Traditions
Alan Dyson, Small Groups/Involvement Minister
You may have heard the story about a woman who was cooking a roast and cut the end off before putting it in the oven, even though the whole thing would fit. Her husband asked her why she did this, and she responded that she did it because she was taught to cook it that way, but admitted she had no idea why. She asked her mother why she cooked it that way, and her mom said that she cut the end off of the roast because that was the way she was taught by her mother. Trying to get to the bottom of this mystery, she then called Grandma for the answer. Grandma told her the reason she cut the end of the roast off before cooking was because her oven was too small to cook the whole roast, so she had no choice. How funny, yet sad-years of waste simply because the method was never questioned. It was what they were used to and that was that-it was tradition.
In the church, we often do things simply because "that is the way it is always done." We are comfortable with routine and when something changes in that routine, we often want to run away and fight to keep what we know intact. These are traditions. Traditions are not inherently bad, but we must be comfortable examining all of them and deciding which ones to keep and why we keep them.
There are traditions that we need to keep, should keep, and must keep. They remind us of who we are and where we have come from. There are times, however, that our traditions can hold us back and keep us from loving God with everything we have. This happens when our traditions become more important that loving our neighbors, when traditions are more important than our unity, and especially when our traditions become more important than our Lord. We must be careful not to make anything we do more important than the One for whom we do them.
As a body, our focus must be Christ, no more, no less. We must examine our traditions-the things we hold to dearly in the church, and decide if we hold on to them to serve God, or because they make us comfortable. God calls us to serve him with everything we have and be willing to sacrifice anything He asks us to, including our man-made traditions.
What traditions are you holding on to? What are those things about church that you think are essential, yet are really traditional? What might you need to let go of?
See to it that no one takes you captive through "hollow and deceptive philosophy," which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Scouting the Divine: My Search for God in Wine, Wool, and Wild Honey
by Margaret Feinberg

The author spends time with a shepherdess, a farmer, a vine dresser, and a beekeeper. Along the way, she gains deeper insight about how Scripture applies to life today and discovers answers to puzzling questions. What does it mean for a land to be described as overflowing with honey? How often does a grapevine need to be pruned? Do sheep really know their shepherd's voice?
Registration will continue on June 20 after each service.
