Our Deepest Sympathy...
to the families of the following people who recently passed away:
Irene Tregellas; Art Gradillas, Sr.; Ruth Green; Mark Jacobs' mother; and Twila Johnson's mother.  Please keep their families in prayer during this difficult time.

Niños de Baja (formerly Rancho de los Niños) needs for this month:
Sugar, flour, rice, and cooking oil.  Bring these items to the Church Office at any time.  Thanks for caring and sharing!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your prayers, cards, and calls showing your concern for me and my family in my recent episode with my heart.  Even though the operation was said to have "not been successful" in what they wanted, our God was glorifed in your outpouring of love.  Praise the Lord!
In Christ,
Shirley Flermoen and family

Congratulations to Steve and Tammy Berlin on the birth of their daughter, Tahlia Nadia Alqueenia, born on December 10.  She joins big brother Jonathan at home.

The Revolution
Are you ready to enlist?  Are you ready to be part of the most significant movement that the world has ever seen?  The movement is old, but it is still vibrant and looking for recruits.  I am talking about The Revolution!  In 2010, First Christian Church will begin this exciting new series looking at the book of
1 John.  It is time to dust off our Bibles, strap on our helmets, and take our swords by our sides!  It's time to join Jesus in the greatest work to which he
has called us!
Honored Servant of the Month
Hopefully by now you have noticed that we have started to recognize "Servants of the Month" here at FCC.  The purpose of this new program is not to put anyone up on a pedestal, but rather to point out examples of our brothers and sisters in Christ who are using the gifts and talents God has given them to build up the body of Christ.  It is important, as we work together to lift up Christ, that we have good examples to emulate.  For those of us who have been in the faith for awhile, it is good to be reminded from time to time that serving is from the heart and for God. We do not serve man, but our Lord.  We do not serve because of what we can get, but because of what we have already received.  For those who are new to the faith, the examples set forth by those in service can be invaluable in helping to find a path to a deeper relationship with Jesus.  Growing up in the church, I have been blessed to have had many saints to teach me about service and community.
Each month, we will spotlight an honored servant so we can celebrate together the goodness of our God in these individuals and the blessings he has given to this church through them.  Please pray for the servants spotlighted, take a second to congratulate them, and then use their example to figure out who you can serve or how you can serve.  We would also like to know who you look up to and who challenges you to serve God more.  If you have someone in mind, and you'd like us to honor them as a Servant of the Month, write a brief summary of who they are, and how they have blessed/impacted your life.   Either drop it by the Church Office, the Welcome Center, or email it to me at alan.fcc@gmail.com.  It is exciting to be a part of what God is doing here in Yuma.  May your heart for service continue to increase as we grow together into Christ.

Second-Half Adults (50+) Potluck Brunch/Auction
Another Christmas has passed.  It was a special season to not only celebrate our Savior's birth, but it also provided us with another opportunity to give. Besides the good times spent together with family and friends, it probably included some participation in one of the charity organizations in our community.  In either case, it gave us a good feeling by being able to show someone else, with our gifts, that we cared for them and loved them.  But that season is now gone for another year.  It was an opportunity.
We're providing you with another opportunity, or season, to show Christ's love to others.  Only this time, it will be to help provide a family in our own congregation with some of their very basic needs; and as a bonus to experiencing that good feeling of giving again, we can enjoy ourselves in the process!
If you received a gift at Christmas that you can't use, or don't need, put it in a non see-through bag, seal it, and bring it to our next potluck luncheon on January 16, from 10--11:30 am in the Cafe.  After we are done eating, every bag, contents unseen, will be auctioned off.  The entire proceeds will go to meet the needs of a family here in our church.
Bring someone with you to share in this time of food and fun.  All beverages and tableware will be provided.  Hope you can make it... and don't forget your bag!
International Initiatives

 - As we go to print, Betsy Brown is waiting for a visa to begin her work in the Middle East. To receive Betsy's updates, notify her at brownelizabeth0@gmail.com
 - Jeff Phillips of Iberoamerican Ministries (Chile and beyond) will be preaching on January 29.
Jeff and his wife, Kathy, went to Chile over 26 years ago to plant churches and to send Chileans to plant churches in other countries.
 - The International Student Office of AWC and the Missions Ministry Team are grateful to those who housed students during the holidays and before the dorms opened this week.  This has been an incredible blessing to the students and a great witness to the entire campus.
 - If you are interested in sponsoring an international student, please contact Beth Johnson at beth.johnson@fccmissions.com.   Sponsorship merely means spending time with a student.  This could include meals in your home, shopping trips, sporting events, movies, etc.
 - A roster of all short-term trips planned for 2010 will be published soon on the church website.
Blessings for the New Year,

Children's Ministry

Rick Keeling, Children's Minister
Les Gompert, Associate Children's Minister

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."       Matthew 19:14

The FCC Children's Ministry Team firmly believes the best place, by far, for children to learn of their Savior and grow in faith is in the home with believing families.  That being said, Jesus established the church as a body and gave various gifts to be shared. Throughout the week, we offer a variety of times
where children can come and fellowship, learn, and worship.

 Wednesdays
Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm is our Faith Weaver Friends program where kids learn in a fun way through crafts, stories, snacks, and games.  Come and check us out!  If you've always just come at one particular time, why not spread your wings a little and try something new this week?  There are numerous adult Bible classes or worship times that correspond with all of our times.

 Saturdays
At 6:00 pm (during Twenty4/7), children ages 3 through (?) have an opportunity to worship and praise.  From 6:30-7:15 pm, they will have class time with a Bible lesson and crafts.

Sundays
Each Sunday at 9:30 am, pre-K through K have their worship in "Praise Time" with singing, worship, and Bible story time. Grades 1-5 are in Sunday School classes, then between services they switch.  The little guys go downstairs, and the elementary kids take over the Kid Zone Room.  During the 11:00 service, the elementary kids have their praise and worship time while the pre-K & Ks have their Sunday School classes.

"AGAINST ALL ODDS" - WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
by Julia Staton
When a person is oppressed by another segment of society, it is difficult to maintain a positive outlook.  Those who are continually told by words and actions that they are inferior, begin to wonder if they have any worth at all.  People who are torn down by abuse, usually take a hit on their self-esteem.
The women of the Old Testament lived in a very oppressive culture.  They often felt trapped because of their gender and the low position in which society had placed them.  Yet, as we look at women's history with God, we discover women who maintained their dignity and feelings of value, women who had self-confidence, women who were leaders and exerted influence, women who persevered and thrived against all odds.  How were they able to triumph?  Come and find out as we study selected women of the Old Testament.  The study
begins January 19 and 20.

Registration will begin January 3 after each service, or sign up on the church website (www.fccyuma.org).  Plan to spend time in God's Word, and share girlfriend time this winter, Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening.
