Our Deepest Sympathy
to the families of the following people who recently passed away: Keith Kissel and Louis Hershkowitz.
Please keep their families in prayer during this difficult time.
We want to say thank you over and over for all the church did for us while we got to be part of the FCC family.  Starting with Nick's deployment to Iraq in January 2006, to the day we left when Dan lifted us up in prayer, God used each and every one of you to bless us.  We always had people praying for us and caring for us.  We will never forget FCC and what you mean to us!  We hope to be able to come back and visit some day, but if it never happens, we will see you in heaven!  We love you and pray for you!  Thank you again for everything!
Nick, Diane, Jordan, Karston, and Leighton Burleson

To those who offered up prayers on my behalf during my recent surgery and brief hospital stay, thank you! I'm confident they made a difference, as only prayer can. Thank you for continuing to be found faithfull in this vital ministry of the church.   Jerry (and Eva) Elzey

Elders' Corner
Dear fellow Christians,
In the last Elders' Corner, our Chairman, Tom Dyson, answered the questions, "What is an Elder?" and "What are the requirements to become an Elder at FCC?"  Also, Tom noted that the Board was looking at two men, Mr. Rod Reed and Mr. Don Johnson, as candidates for Eldership.  Over the last month, the Board has met with both men individually, and we have invited anyone in the congregation with concerns or positive comments regarding the candidates to let us know.  We have had nothing but positive comments from all of you.
Therefore, I am pleased to announce that last week we approved Rod and Don as Elders.  Sometime during the next month or so, we will introduce them to the congregation at the Saturday and Sunday services.
Elders' meetings are at 6:30 am every Wednesday.  Tom Dyson leads the meeting.  Meetings always start in prayer.  We specifically begin with the prayer list which is compiled from the prayer requests and praise reports that are found on the information cards that you place in the offering trays.  Then we add additional prayer items to the list based on information we get from the staff and from our own knowledge of the lives of the congregation.  Usually, there are between 20 and 50 requests each week.  We want to know about every situation that is praiseworthy, or requires prayer, so that those items can be lifted up to God.  So, if you have prayers or praises, please call the Church Office, fill out a prayer card, or let one of us know.
Following prayer, we have a summary of the financial condition of the church and a report on issues related to the building from our Business Manager, Rick Lathrop.  Rick is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the building and supervises the finances.  Major building or financial issues are decided by the Board.
Next on the agenda is the "Growth Report" from Phillip Krueger.  This report includes the activities of the Monday Night calling teams, baptisms and transfers over the past week, activities of the TLC groups and adult Sunday school classes, and anything else having to do with the Evangelism/Christian Education Ministries.
Then, Dan Trautman presents the staff reports.  This includes activities of the rest of the staff (Missions, Women's, Children's, Youth, Pastoral, Music, Media, and Involvement Ministries), as well as the activities of our Christian counselor, the recovery house we support, the Deacons, and Southwestern Christian School.  The Elders don't typically ask staff responsible for these ministries to attend the early-morning meetings, but if major decisions must be made that affect those ministries, they are asked to attend.
Then, we discuss "shepherding" issues.  This typically includes issues involving individual members of the congregation, such as opportunities for the laying on of hands.
Finally, we end with announcements and another prayer.  Meetings usually last about an hour.
If you have any questions about the role of the Elders, our decisions, or anything else about the church, please contact us!  Our phone numbers are in the directory or they can be obtained from the Church Office.  We are here to serve FCC and value every opportunity to do so.
God Bless,
Glenn C. Wright
FROM THE MINISTER'S DESK:                       Dan Trautman
Dan Trautman, Senior Minister
"For this is what the sovereign Lord says:  I myself will search for my sheep and look after them."
                             Ezekiel 34:11
Right now, in northeastern Oregon, the cowboys are saddling up and heading for the high mountain pastures where they put their pairs (cow and calf) in at the first of the summer.  Their mission is to round up all the pairs and bring them back into the valley pastures to get ready for weaning and winter.  They will spend a day or two in each pasture at first, then back ride for several days until they come out with the same number of pairs they started out with in the summer.  Roundup is essential business when it comes to cows and calves.  It always takes place in October - the fall month just before winter sets in.
This October would be a good time for us here at First Christian to start roundup.  Sometimes is just takes a phone call or short visit to encourage people to come back to the fellowship.  This time of year (fall) is a time when we get back into gear with the routine of life.  Let me encourage you to spend a few minutes and search your mind for the names of those who might need a "roundup" call.  Make that call and let them know they are missed and that it is time to get back into the fellowship.  These kinds of calls are essential to the business of the Church!
Because of Him,
Dan
P.S.  Please remember to pray, and consider giving a sacrificial offering during the month of October, as the Lord leads.  Thank you!

Just My Opinion                                                     Phillip Krueger, Associate Minister
Phillip Krueger, Associate Minister

The new owner of a fish market ordered a sign which read: "Fresh Fish for Sale Here."  The very first customer said, "Why did you include the word "FRESH" in your sign?  You wouldn't sell them otherwise would you?"  The owner then changed the sign to: "Fish for Sale Here."  The next customer said, "Why do you say, "HERE?"  Where else would you be selling them?"  The sign was again changed to read: "Fish for Sale."  The next customer said, "FOR SALE" is not necessary in your sign.  The whole purpose of your market is to have fish for sale."  The new owner changed his sign to read: "Fish."  Another customer entered the store and saw the sign.  "What's the use of having the sign up there when everyone can smell them from a block away?"  And that is how the owner of the fish market went out of business.
 - Andy Rooney said, "A great many people do not have a right to their own opinion because they don't know what they are talking about."
 - Frank Clark said, "I wonder why the fellow with the least information about a subject is so often the most opinionated?"
 - Plato said, "You are young, my son, and, as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions.  Refrain, therefore, a while from setting yourself up as a judge of the highest matters."
 - Horace Mann said, "Do not think of knocking out another person's brains because he differs in opinion from you.  It would be as rational to knock yourself on the head because you differ from yourself 10 years ago."
 - George Lichtenberg said, "Judge men, not by their opinions, but by what their opinions have made of them."
It is easy to give others our opinions.  It is sometimes tempting to armchair quarterback and to meddle in other people's lives.  Some people just have to express their opinions even if it is really none of their business.  Well-meaning parents will offer their unsolicited advice about their adult children's marriage or child raising techniques.  College-age students often move far across the country from their parents because they want to live their own lives without well-intentioned parents constantly offering unwanted suggestions on just about everything.  People want to live their own lives, make their own choices, and even make their own mistakes without a constant running commentary from someone else.  Opinions are often introduced by, "If I were you, I'd..." or, "I think you should..." and the receiver of the unwanted advice often thinks, "You aren't me!  This is my life!  Let me make my own decisions!"
We practice open communion based on the Apostle Paul saying, "A man ought to examine himself (not his neighbor) before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup."   In matters of salvation, Paul writes, "Work out your salvation (not your neighbor's salvation) with fear and trembling." Philippians 4:12b.  Most of the 14th chapter of Romans deals with giving our unsolicited opinions to others.  In verse four he says, "Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls."  And in verse 13, "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way."
Where the Scripture speaks, we should speak.  Where the Scripture is silent, we have freedom.  Let God work as He wishes in another person's life.  And, who knows if your opinion is the best one?
God gives us the freedom to choose the course of our lives for ourselves.  We should give the same freedom to others that God gives to us.

Second-Half Adult Ministries                       Second Half Ministries
Jerry Elzey, Pastoral Minister
This month, the Second-Half Singles are expressing their gratitude to the staff of various local nursing homes for the dedicated, compassionate care they provide for their residents.  Because of the often unfortunate nature of circumstances in these homes, the work can require a lot of patience, be very demanding, and at times, unpleasant.  If you would like to participate by fixing a plate of cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc., along with a card (which we will provide), and drop it off to a nursing home, call Jerry at 726-5616 to coordinate a day and request a card.
See it as a good work and an opportunity to let the love of Christ be seen in, and through, you.  A small but rewarding effort. It could be just the encouragement that some staff member, somewhere, needs.

Guess what time it is?!  It's Walk-a-thon time again!  Each school year, in October, SWCS families are asked to collect pledges for the laps their student will be walking at our annual Walk-a-thon.  The Walk-a-thon is one of our main fundraisers for the year and is held annually on the grounds of First Christian Church.  This year, it will be held on Friday, November 6, beginning at 8:30 am and ending around noon.  Students will walk a total of 22 laps around the FCC campus.  Visitors are welcome to come and participate or just cheer on the students as they walk.  Your financial support of our walk-a-thon helps to keep Southwestern Christian School providing a quality Christian education to the children of Yuma.  Thank you for your support throughout the past sixteen years.  God is great, and He provides for the needs of our church and school through His faithful servants, you!  We hope to see you join us for the fun!  For further information, please contact the school office at 726-3086.

Honored Servant of the Month - Martha McDowell                                                             Martha McDowell
This month we are beginning a new feature, the "Honored Servant of the Month." The purpose of this is to highlight servants within our church body who give of themselves to further God's kingdom.  I am proud to introduce to you this month's Honored Servant, Martha McDowell.
For those of us who know Martha, it comes as no surprise that she would receive this recognition. Martha is selfless, always giving more than she asks for. Martha has been an indispensible part of the Missions Team of our church for many years. She keeps the finances of the Missions Department in order and makes sure that every cent of God's money dedicated to the Missions Ministry is accounted for and properly used.
Martha truly has a servant's heart. When asked why she keeps serving after all these years, even after medical issues would have made some quit, she answered, "Because I love the Lord." A simple statement that says it all. Martha has faithfully served this church for years, and she does it because she wants to serve Jesus.
This month we want to take this opportunity to say, "Thank you" to Martha McDowell.  Your service has touched the lives of many. The work you have done has been instrumental in advancing the Kingdom of God locally and globally. You truly are an example to all of us about what it means to be a servant.
May God bless you and keep you, Martha.  May His face always shine upon you, good and faithful servant.  -Alan Dyson, Involvement Minister

Laretta K. Shrader, Missions Minister
Last month I published a letter from the four churches we work with in Chile, inviting me to come down and teach and encourage.  As you read this, JB and I will be there.  We will be visiting those four churches and a new church plant in five different cities.  There will be more detailed reports in the bulletin inserts the next two weeks.
On September 17 & 18, 60 mission leaders from Christian Churches were invited to Dallas as the guests of the National Missionary Convention and Church Development Fund.  We spent 24 hours praying and planning the direction independent Christian churches will be going in the next decade.  The dream is to plant 1000 new churches in the U.S., and 1000 in other countries among unreached people groups.  We want to have 100 new translations of at least the New Testament by 2020.  And, of course, to do this we must teach and convince our churches to pray.  Since these are revolutionary ideas to come out of the Restoration Movement, we are calling this movement "Restoration Revolution." These are big dreams, expensive dreams, but we believe they are the dreams of God.
Through webinars and meetings at the conventions, information will be shared and excitement for these lofty goals created.  It was a privilege and a blessing to be among men and women who dream big dreams, even during tough economic times.

Tumaini Ministries
Kenya, Africa
www.tumainiinternational.org
Founded by Dr. Stanley Mutunga of Hope International University, Tumaini International Ministries exists to provide hope to AIDS orphaned children, their guardians, and immediate communities.  The focus is on children who have lost one or both parents and are left under the care of other children, neighbors, or grandparents who themselves need economic support.  Dr. Mutunga is himself Kenyan and has lost two brothers and a brother-in-law to AIDS.
Through a Tumaini sponsorship, children receive school fees and basic necessities such as clothing, food, medical services, and counseling.  Christian camps, called TUBE, are also included in the sponsorship.  Tumaini kids participate in weeklong camps with their peers under the guidance of trained Christian leaders.  Starting with 15 orphans in 2002, with hopes of serving up to 250 by 2012, at the first of 2009 Tumaini was serving nearly 1000 AIDS orphans.  Note: Almost 100 of those are sponsored through FCC.  The following is a letter from our son, Joseph.  Laretta

"Come all you who are thirsty, come to the waters . . . that satisfy" - Isaiah 55:1
We are reminded almost daily of the importance of taking care of our bodies, and/or taking
care of our environment, but how often do we think of the necessity of taking care of our souls?  The upcoming Oasis Prayer Seminar and Retreat will give you the tools and practices
that will enable you to be refreshed and rejuvenated in your soul.  There will be a teaching on prayer, followed by some practice in prayer and meditation on Scripture.  A meditation guide
will be provided to help you focus on the Lord in your own personal "quiet" time.

FCC Children's Ministries...
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14

Here at FCC Children's Ministry, we firmly believe the best place, by far, for children to learn of their Savior and grow in faith is in the home with believing families.  That being said, Jesus established the church as a body and gave various gifts to be shared. Throughout the week, we offer a variety of times where children can come and fellowship, learn, and worship.

Wednesdays
Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm is our Faith Weaver Friends program where kids learn in a fun way through crafts, stories, snacks, and games.  So, come, check us out!  If you've always just come at one particular time, why not spread your wings a little and try something new this week?  There are numerous adult Bible classes or worship times that correspond with all of our times.

Saturdays
At 6:00 pm (during Twenty4/7), children ages 3 through (?) have an opportunity to worship and praise.  From 6:30-7:15 pm, they will have class time with a Bible lesson and crafts.

Sundays
Each Sunday at 9:30 am, pre-K through K have their worship in "Praise Time" with singing, worship, and Bible story time. Grades 1-5 are in their Sunday School classes, then between services they switch!  The little guys go downstairs, and the elementary kids take over the Kid Zone Room.  During the 11:00 service, the elementary kids have their praise and worship time while the pre-K & Ks have their Sunday School classes.

Special Note-

We're asking for CANDY donations to be used for the Family Fun Fest. Bags of candy can be dropped off at the Church Office or the Kidz Check-In Counter. Thank you in advance!
