Please keep their families in prayer during this difficult time. |
Dear Church Family,
My sincere thanks for all the prayers, calls, and cards when my grand-daughter, Debbie Crowder, died. They really helped me through a sad and distressing time. My special thanks to Jerry and Eva Elzey and Phillip Krueger. I am so glad to have my Christian friends and belong to the family of God.

Joe T., Pat, and Tommy Lee Mullins wish to say a big THANKS to everyone at First Christian Church who prayed for Tommy before, during, and after his eye surgery on July 1. Special thanks to Jerry Elzey, Pastoral Minister, who stayed with us at the hospital until they came for Tommy; and David Champagne, who helped after the surgery getting Tommy home and settled into his own room. God bless all, and we love you! |

Help Build a Home and a Better Life for One Family
The latest outreach of Arizona Reservations Ministries is building low cost housing on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Last October, FCC took a team to Globe every weekend. We started a home the first weekend and finished it the last. Also that last weekend, the traditional house blessing was held. This year we will be doing a modified version of the same thing. The first team leaves on Friday, September 4. We will also be taking teams September 25-27, and October 23-25. Groups from other churches will be working on the house in between times, so we won't be under quite as much pressure as last year. We would love to have people with construction experience, but it is not necessary. The biggest qualification is a willing, servant's heart. We can also promise you a weekend of fun and fellowship as we travel, work, and eat together. Because of what we do these weekends, a huge difference will be made in the life of a family. Approximately 84% of all enrolled San Carlos Apache Tribal Members live on the Reservation. Although the Tribe has worked hard to develop the Reservation economy, 76% of the population is unemployed, and the poverty level stands at 77%. These statistics, far above the national and state averages, result in a pressing need for adequate, affordable housing on the Reservation, home to 3,325 families. Of that number, there are 3,137 low-income, 806 near-elderly, and 643 elderly households. Forty percent of these families live in sub-standard housing conditions, and 41% live in overcrowded conditions. Only 2,061 home ownership units are available. The Tribe would need to build 145 homes per year for the next 10 years to meet the housing needs of the current population alone. Due to financial limitations, the Tribe itself can only build about 20 homes a year. Jorge and Cynthia Pantoja will be answering questions and taking applications on Saturday evening, and Kevin Swearingin will be available on Sunday morning. | |

Elders' Corner Dear fellow Christians, Over the last year, First Christian Church has lost two Elders due to personal family reasons. Their loss leaves us with an Elder Board of six Elders. This makes it difficult to maintain a quorum for voting purposes. We have always felt that our ideal Board size is from eight to ten Elders. After much prayer and discussion, we feel we need to bring on at least two additional Elders to help carry the awesome responsibility. We are looking for individuals that will represent the majority of our members, and men that are already serving their fellow Christians. Although Elder candidates are appointed by the Board of Elders, we do want to hear from our congregation. Therefore, if you are aware of something that may impede one of our candidates from serving as an Elder, please direct your concerns to a member of the Board of Elders. Our current Elders are: Jack DeLange, Ron Miller, Lynn Ware, Mike Watson, Glenn Wright, and me. This is one of the most important positions that we appoint, and as a Board we do wish to hear from our congregation. When seeking new Elders, we take the following into consideration:
What is an Elder? Believing that the spiritual leadership of the Lord's Church should be pace-setters in spiritual matters, an example to the flock, and persons of vision and faith, we believe that an Elder is well-grounded in the faith, the Word of God, and prayer. As an Elder, he is experienced in the Christian walk and has many life experiences which help him share his hard-earned wisdom through mentoring, training, and teaching. He is committed to helping the individual participants of the church family apply God's Word to their lives by his example and personal influence.
A shepherd (Elder) must be connected to the people. He lives with his sheep and watches over them. He protects the sheep from outside attack and from disease within. He knows when to gently nudge a person in the right direction, and when to boldly confront the person. He knows how to comfort and encourage the flock when there is fear, and how to lead the flock when there is confusion. An Elder sets the pace in his faithful stewardship of time, service, and finances. He shows the importance of harmony and unity in the body through his support of the Senior Minister and staff and his encouragement of the Ministry and Home Group Leaders. An Elder doesn't hold an office, he lives a life and makes a difference in the lives of the people he serves. What are the requirements to become an Elder at FCC? The apostle Paul gives us clear guidance in Scripture about the kind of person it takes to be an Elder. "It is a true saying that if someone wants to be an elder, he desires an honorable responsibility. For an elder must be a man whose life cannot be spoken against. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exhibit self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home and must be able to teach. He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, peace loving, and not one who loves money. He must manage his own family well, with children who respect and obey him. For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God's church? An elder must not be a new Christian, because he might be proud of being chosen so soon, and the Devil will use that pride to make him fall. Also, people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not fall into the Devil's trap and be disgraced. 1 Timothy 3:1-7 (The Living Bible)
Currently, we are looking at two individuals: Mr. Rod Reed, and Mr. Don Johnson. We will be providing additional personal information regarding our two candidates for your review in the next couple of weeks so you may get to know them better. Please feel free to let one of the Elders or Ministers know if you have any concerns regarding either of these two candidates. This is not a position that we are in a rush to fill. We will take the time necessary to ensure that both candidates carry the Scriptural beliefs that are required to hold the position. God Bless,
Tom L. Dyson |

Twenty4/7
Paul Mondragon
By now, you may be familiar with a fresh, new ministry here at First Christian Church called "Baby's Voice." This ministry is in partnership with New Life Pregnancy Center to help protect the innocent life of the unborn. Now, within our own church, we have the means to intervene and help those you may know who are pregnant and confused by the options available to them. Will you please remember this ministry as you talk to people and when you realize that there may be an opportunity for you to help point someone to this lifesaving option that FCC offers? In addition, we are also collecting diapers, baby wipes, formula, and almost anything "for babies" that can help with young mothers who find themselves struggling with babies and meeting their needs. Drop off your supplies in the carts on the North and South entrances. And finally, we start a new series September 5 called "Seven." It is a multi-week series looking at seven sins which are constant distractions and impediments that keep us from living the fruitful and joyous life that Christ has called us to live. We think this short series will make a positive impact on those who are present to hear it, so we would love to see you join us here at Twenty4/7. Thanks, and God Bless! Second-Half Adult Ministries
Jerry Elzey, Pastoral Minister Just about everybody is either familiar with the services that Hospice of Yuma provides, or has experienced it for themselves during one of the lowest times in their life. What many of us may not be aware of, though, is all of the services that they make available to us. At our next Second-Half potluck luncheon, a Hospice of Yuma representative will be here with us as our special guest speaker to better acquaint us with why they exist and all that they have to offer our community. She will also answer any questions you may have. Our luncheon will be held here in the FCC Cafe on Saturday, September 12, from 1:00-2:30. Beverages (coffee, tea, and water), as well as all tableware, will be provided.
Ministry to Second-Half Singles And for those among us who are living alone in their second half of life, a Ministry to Singles has been formed and will meet for the first time on Saturday, September 19, at 3:00 pm at the home of Doris Musgrave, 2665 W. 12th Place. So, if you are 50+, or close, (we won't "card" you), bring your favorite treat, and join us for a dessert potluck. It will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with others who can relate to those things you may be lacking in life as the result of a common lifestyle of a single person. It will also be a good time for you to share any ideas or suggestions regarding how both social and spiritual needs can be met through this ministy, making it as meaningful and fulfilling as possible. We look forward to seeing you. |
Southwestern Christian School
Debbie Stewart, Principal
Recently, FCC asked members to sign-up for co-rec softball. A large number of our members signed up to be a part of this fellowship opportunity. I am excited that FCC members will be able to enjoy the new softball field which has been designed, developed, and maintained by one of our SWCS parents, Mr. Todd Mellon. Mr. Mellon has graciously donated his time, materials, and workers to help make this project a reality. It is exciting when the families of Southwestern Christian School can bless the members of First Christian Church. Right now, several FCC members are committed to obtaining outdoor lights for the softball field and basketball court which would allow for additional church sports opportunities. If you would like more information on this project, please contact Mr. Tom Fell at 305-9159. God is good! Look at how He has blessed our church and our school as they work together to lift up Christ in Yuma and to the ends of the earth. In Christ, Debbie Stewart Principal |
Tyson's Tale
Alan Dyson, Involvement Minister
My wife and I just got back from vacation. It was great! We went to Oregon for almost two weeks and spent time with my wife's parents. This was the first time that our dog, Tyson, went on such a long trip with us. It took us two days to drive there, and two back. We stayed in our tent at a great campground on the way up and back. It was awesome.
However, Tyson was not too enthusiastic about the trip. The day we left, we put him in his kennel in the back of our car and headed out. Around the Sand Dune rest area, we pulled over to let him out, because he hadn't stopped whining since we left. My first thoughts were, "We can still turn around and leave him.... This trip is going to be very long if he doesn't stop whining." He eventually did calm down, but for most of the way up, including the night in the tent, he was very nervous, jumpy, and just not sure if this traveling thing was such a good idea. Finally, we arrived in Oregon. My in-laws have a beautiful house with a huge yard with lots of trees, a little ditch that looks a lot like a creek with water running through it, and lots of grass. Tyson was in heaven. After a brief time of dehydration as he attempted to mark every tree in this part of Oregon, he had a blast. He spent a lot of time running around, checking out the sights, chasing squirrels, eating acorns (I know, he's weird! By the way, do acorns hurt dogs?) and basically having the time of his life. He even did great all the way home just sleeping and watching all the way. You know, I am a lot like Tyson, and I bet you are, too. Oftentimes, I feel as though God is trying to move me, trying to get me to leave my comfort zone and try something new. When this happens, I find myself whining all the time, jumping at shadows, and being very anxious. I hate not knowing what lies ahead. The thing is, not once has God taken me on one of these journeys where the destination wasn't great. And still, I have a hard time just relaxing and enjoying the journey. My hope and prayer for all of us is that we can get to a place where we can relax and trust that God only wants what is best for us; that the places he will take us are good places, and the things that we will experience will bring joy. Even those times when we seem to be struggling just to keep our heads above water, may we find peace that our Father in heaven will bring us safely to His destination and will never leave us where we are. Enjoy the ride. |
International Initiatives
Laretta K. Shrader, Missions Minister
The following is a letter from four of the churches we work with in Chile. With the blessing of Dan and the Elders, JB and I will be traveling there on September 30 as your ambassadors. We are humbled and honored to be the recipients of this incredible act of generosity and consider it a privilege to represent the faithful body that is FCC.
Because He Lives, Laretta K. Shrader
To the Elders of Yuma First Christian Church, We are pleased to greet you and bless you in the dear love of Jesus. We have received the news that this year, due to the current economic situation, you have decided not to send a short-term team to Chile as you have done every year since the beginning of the work in Lautaro and among the Mapuches in the southern part of Chile. The leadership and the entire congregation want to express their concern and sadness for this situation and the fact that we will lose, at least for this year, the continuity of working "yoked together" with the body of Christ in Yuma. We understand this is not an easy time for anyone, and without a doubt we know many of you feel the same sadness as we do. Nevertheless, we have learned from our pastors and your church to live and walk by faith, trusting our God who is greater than any difficulties of this world and whose financial system never suffers setbacks since He owns all the gold and silver. Our intention is to encourage you to maintain being yoked together following the principles God has given us for our ministry. After hearing the news that you could not come, we began to ask ourselves: "What can we do to keep us yoked together?" We know the relationships among people and the unity of the body of Christ are more important than any personal or corporate interest. Therefore, the leadership and churches have taken the step of faith and are committed to working hard to assume 100% of the travel and hosting costs so that our sister, Laretta Shrader, can come to teach and work yoked together with the churches we have planted together over the past years. The exact date will depend on Laretta's agenda, but the ideal date for us would be during the second part of the present year. In case she cannot come, we would ask you to seek out the person who could replace her for this trip. Our greatest desire is to glorify Jesus through unity and by working together. We want the fellowship among people and churches to remain a priority, and we trust in your willingness to make this invitation become a reality. We look forward to hearing your answer and what would be the most appropriate date for this trip. With deep love in Christ,

God's Greatest Gift to Women - Jesus By Julia Staton A celebration is due! Because God cares so much for us women, and is so sensitive to our needs, He has bestowed upon us a great gift. Through an in-depth study of Jesus and the individual women whose lives He touched, we will begin to realize all that Jesus has done for us as women. We will realize that God sent Jesus, not only to save us, but also to enrich us and free us to be who we were created to be. Join us this fall for the fun!
Julia, a published writer with two books and numerous magazine articles, developed women's ministries at several large churches in California and specializes in leadership training for women. She has been writing and teaching Bible studies for over 30 years. As a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Lincoln Christian College in Christian Education, she has held numerous positions in her career which include Pastor of Women's Ministries, Director of Prayer Ministry, and Pastor of Adult Education. You won't want to miss this special opportunity.
Esther By Beth MooreGoing up against heavyweights bent on her destruction, Esther trusted God and landed a blow that saved her people. The Old Testament story of Esther is a profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today's woman. Esther's destiny can be yours as you know more deeply the God who is in your corner.
Registration is available after each service in the Main Lobby, or sign up on the church website (www.fccyuma.org). Plan to spend time in God's Word, and share girlfriend time this fall Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening. |

FCC Children's Ministries... Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14
Here at FCC Children's Ministry, we firmly believe the best place, by far, for children to learn of their Savior and grow in faith is in the home with believing families. That being said, Jesus established the church as a body and gave various gifts to be shared. Throughout the week, we offer a variety of times where children can come and fellowship, learn, and worship.
Wednesdays Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm is our Faith Weaver Friends program where kids learn in a fun way through crafts, stories, snacks, and games. So, come, check us out! If you've always just come at one particular time, why not spread your wings a little and try something new this week? There are numerous adult Bible classes or worship times that correspond with all of our times.
Saturdays Beginning September 5, at 6:00 pm (during Twenty 4/7), children ages 3 through (?) have an opportunity to worship and praise. From 6:30-7:15, they will have class time with a Bible lesson and crafts.
Sundays Each Sunday at 9:30, pre-K through K have their worship in "Praise Time" with singing, worship, and Bible story time. The 1st through 5th graders are in their Sunday school classes, then between services they switch! The little guys go downstairs, and the elementary kids take over the Kid Zone Room. During the 11:00 service, the elementary kids have their praise and worship time while the pre-K & Ks have their Sunday school classes.
Special Note Fall Family Fun Fest & Carnival October 31 It was such a great success last year, we've decided to do it again! And, again, we're also asking for CANDY donations for the event. Bags of candy can be dropped off at the Church Office or the Kidz Check-In counter. Thank you in advance. |
