Our Deepest Sympathy
to the family of Dave Mulhern who recently passed away.

Dear FCC Family,
Thank you for
the prayers, the cards, the food, the encouragement and the support during Dave's illness and passing from this life to his heavenly home.  We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and the love shown by the staff, the elders, and so many of the members of this body of believers.  We appreciate each of you and your
concern.  The memorial service and the luncheon that followed were truly a celebration of Dave's life.  To those of you that served in any capacity, we say "thank you."

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Staples Office Supply used to run a commercial before school started each year entitled, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year."  Parents would laugh because they were usually ready for their little ones to head off to school and allow them more "down" time.  Well, it is the most wonderful time of the year for our staff at Southwestern Christian School, because each year we are excited for the incoming students who will occupy our classrooms and become a part of our hearts for the entire year.  Currently, we have 183 students enrolled for the 2009/2010 school year.  Our classrooms average 15 students which allows for more teacher/student interaction.  Our fifth through eighth grade students also have the ability to compete in our intermural sports program for boys and girls.  Each year brings new adventures and opportunities for growth.  Our staff would love the opportunity to be a part of your family.  If you are interested in SWCS or enrollment, please check us out on the church website at www.fccyuma.org.  May God watch over you and your family during this busy school year.
In Christ,

". . . And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."  Acts 2:47b

I want everyone to keep their eyes on a new program that is up and going strong:  "Wednesday Night Outreach."  To date, we have reached over 1,100 homes in the Foothills area, and we have many more to go.  Wednesday Night Outreach is heading out to local neighborhoods and handing out information about our services, TLCs, etc.  Wednesday Night Outreach works together with the Love Loaf and Monday Night Calling Ministries, supporting one another as the body of Christ should.  Would you like to be a member of this outreach team?  Contact David McGrew at 726-0631, or e-mail fccwedoutreach@me.com, or show up Wednesdays at 4:45 pm in the FCC Café.  David and crew are hitting the streets with the message of Christ.  We need to pray for these soldiers and give them some help.
By the way, if you will ask them (your neighbors, co-workers, friends, and relatives), they will come to church--if you take the time to ask.  Most of the time, it just takes you showing interest in them.  If you will ask, and they come, then the Lord can add daily to the numbers being saved!

Phillip Krueger, Associate Minister
One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.  That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.  On Monday she gave each student his or her list.  Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered.  "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and "I didn't know others liked me so much" were most of the comments. No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose.  The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.
Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam, and his teacher attended the funeral of that former student.  She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature.  The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one by the coffin.  As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked.  She nodded "yes."  Then he said, "Mark talked about you a lot."  After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.  "We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded, and refolded many times.  The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.  "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it."  All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around.  Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home."  Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album."  "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary."  Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group.  "I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists."
Please pick out five individuals in church next Sunday, and tell them the nicest thing you can say about them!  Also, do the same for an individual you think might not get to hear a "nice evaluation" unless you give them one.  Let me know how people respond to your kind words.

Do you want to join in and make a
difference in saving the lives of the
unborn?  We could sure use your help.  Those who are yet to be born could use your help as well!  On Saturday, August 8, First Christian Church will challenge the Twenty4/7 service to join with Yuma's New Life Pregnancy Center.  Abortion is a terrible issue that leaves women fraught with guilt and pain that does not easily fade.  At the same time, life, the precious life of a baby, is lost in this horrible process.  Won't you help us?
Every week for the next few months, as you come into church for service, we are asking FCC families to bring diapers of all sizes, baby wipes, baby clothing, and anything else baby-related to help encourage and meet the needs of young moms deciding to keep their precious babies to term.  We want to help these moms succeed. We want to provide them with the help they need.  We want to do all we can do for them in the name of Jesus Christ.
Please bring your supplies, and leave them in the carts at the main North and South Entrance.  And, as usual, if you have any questions or want to be involved in this ministry, please let me know. Looking forward to making a difference in our community, one life at a time.

Tyson's Tale
Alan Dyson, Involvement Minister
Tyson and Scout     Our dog, Tyson, has a new buddy. Recently, we have had a hound dog named Scout staying with us while his owners are travelling. Scout is a great house guest. He is definitely a hound dog, no food is safe. Come to think of it, I may be part hound dog. Anyway, Tyson and Scout are having a blast. Every evening, they have about an hour where they just play and go nuts. They wrestle, play tug of war, steal each other's toys and treats, and just in general have a good time. Tyson is loving having a friend around to play with. Scout, being an older dog, has also warmed to the idea of this young teen and is having a lot of fun himself. They share everything. Tyson even lets Scout sleep in his bed while he sleeps someplace else--an arrangement that Scout seems to like since this puts him right next to our bed at night. Then he can keep an eye on us just in case we ever wake up in the night and have a sudden urge to give him something to eat. I have a feeling that these two will be friends for a long time, even after Scout goes home.
What I have learned from this is the true meaning of hospitality. My wife and I agreed to let Scout stay with us for a while. We were glad to do it. We like to help out, and we love dogs. But Kari and I just opened our doors to Scout, we never actually opened our home. As a matter of fact (and I am embarrassed to admit this), the first thing my wife and I did was to have a talk with Scout about how he was to behave in OUR house. Yes, we talked to him; yes, we are weird. Of course, when we got into our house, he promptly left us a pile on our linoleum which I believe was his response to the rules. I can't be positive about that. Tyson, on the other hand, welcomed Scout into his home with open arms. Sure, there were a few moments of inappropriate sniffing, and some nervous tension when they first met. But from those first few moments on, Tyson lets Scout share everything he has. Nothing is off limits to Scout, not the toys, the treats, the beds, or even us. Tyson lets Scout in on everything.
Sometimes I think that hospitality simply means not being mean to someone. You know, be nice, open your door to them, but always keep certain rooms off limits, and don't bring out the good stuff until after the guests are gone. I know I do this at my home (if you have been there and eaten off cheap paper plates and only drank water - I apologize), my life, and even with this church. I have spent a lot of time defining hospitality as being nice to people. Perhaps, like Tyson, true hospitality is where we get past our nervous tension and welcome new people in with open arms. It's about not hiding the good stuff, but allowing all to participate in it. This church family is a loving church family, and I want others to experience that. I am trying even now to get better at hospitality. I hope that all of us will work together to do this as well. After all, if my dog Tyson can do it, so can we....but hopefully without the inappropriate sniffing.

Summer Camp
Well, summer camps are over, and they were a HUGE success!!  There are TONS of people to thank for their efforts, and I'm sure I'll forget some, but here goes...  Thanks to everybody who donated scholarship money.  Because of your generosity, we had a total of 28 scholarships available for camp!  That is absolutely amazing, and we cannot begin to thank you all for your sacrifices.  I assure you that the money was well spent, camps were AWESOME this year, and a lot of students were impacted for, and by, Jesus!!  A GIGANTIC thank you goes out to all of the youth coaches who went on the trips.  Without you guys and gals, the trips would not have happened.  Those brave people were Mark Beeler, Dustin Womer, Michelle Harvey, Frances Hernandez, Amber Hart (middle school camp counselor), Magen Reed, Sherri Elzey, Ashley Perkins, John Aaker, and Kenny Lown.  A huge thank you
as well to Bethany Aaker for driving vans to and from camps for us.  An even larger thank you to the families and spouses of the youth coaches...we appreciate your sacrifices as well in sharing your loved ones with us.  And a huge, large, special recognition for Mark and Frances for attending both camps, which was a total of two weeks of back-to-back camps.  You two are AWESOME, and I especially appreciate you, your families, and the sacrifices you all made.  Thanks a billion!

Jesus Jam
Jesus Jam is August 21 at 7:00 pm this year, and the bands are DecembeRadio and The Afters.  Both bands are amazing, and if you get a chance, you need to go to this concert!!  We will be collecting money in advance and buying our tickets all at the same time since tickets are only $8 if we purchase them that way.  If you wait until the day of the show, they cost $14.  To buy a ticket, bring your money to the Church Office no later than August 17, and your tickets will be available for pick up in the office from August 18-20. We will be having an all-nighter that night following the Jesus Jam.  It will be for middle school through high school, and the cost is $5 (includes pizza, drinks, snacks, games, and breakfast).  It will begin immediately after Jesus Jam and will end at 7:00 the next morning.  Jesus Jam is a great chance to invite your un-churched friends to an amazing concert and to hang out with us afterward, so bring as many friends as you can!!

Focus Groups
Focus groups are small study/accountability groups that meet throughout the school year.  They are comprised of no more than four to five same-gender students and an adult (same gender also).  They meet, study, and practice accountability on a weekly basis.  These groups are extremely beneficial in spiritual growth, but do require commitment.  If you are interested, talk to Jeff and watch for details!

Arizona Reservation Ministries Missions Trips
The latest ministry of ARM is that of building low-cost housing on the San Arizona Reservation Ministries
Carlos Apache Reservation.  Last October, FCC took a team to Globe every weekend.  We started a home the first weekend and finished it the last.  Also, that last weekend, the traditional house blessing was held.
This year we will be doing a modified version of the same thing.  We will be taking teams up September 4-7, September 25-27, and October 23-25.  Other groups will be working on the house in between times so we won't be under quite as much pressure as last year.  Sign-ups will begin the weekend of July 18 & 19 during our International Outreach Weekend.  We would love to have families go on these trips. Young people 13 and up are urged to accompany their parents. The teams are limited to between 15-20 members, so you need to get your spot reserved early.  You will be asked to make a $25 non-refundable deposit when you apply.  When a weekend reaches capacity, it will be closed to further registrations.  The cost will be $45 per day per person.  The first weekend is Labor Day, so it will be considered a three-day weekend.
The plans, as of now, are to leave around 4 on Friday afternoon and return after lunch on Sunday or Monday.
Team Ministry Makes for Successful International WeekendLaretta K. Shrader, Missions Minister
Laretta K. Shrader, Missions Minister
Exciting and touching are two of the adjectives heard over and over again as people have commented about the International Outreach Weekend of July 18 and 19.  Having several "real live" missionaries here certainly helped create excitement.  The enormous map in the lobby, flanked by booths of various international ministries, contributed to visual stimulation.  Yet, basking in the afterglow, I realized it was teamwork that brought it all together.
I have long been an advocate of team ministry.  The Missions Ministry Team has been organized into task groups for almost 20 years.  Each person on the team must take responsibility for a task group to earn the right to make decisions on support and long range planning. Those task groups are prayer, education, hospitality, transportation, member care, administration, AIDS in Africa, short-term trips, and International Students.
The planning and execution of the weekend we called "From the Heavens to the Nations" elevated team ministry to heights we had before only dreamed of.  From the top down, and from the bottom up, an incredible number of people contributed to the weekend's success.
Senior Minister, Dan Trautman, was gracious in allowing Walter Ridgley to preach.  He also gave credibility to the purpose of the weekend by introducing Walt and explaining why there were displays crowding the east end of the main Lobby.  Walt then gave an enlightened sermon on the theme of missions that begins in Genesis 12:3 and does not end until Revelation 7:9. That is team ministry.
Children's Minister, Rick Keeling, not only loaned us a backboard for the world map that was the visual centerpiece, but he also painted it and moved it several times.  Sacrificing time off from work, Karen Edwards put her remarkable talent to work to draw the map. She then enlisted her niece and nephew to help color it and redeemed the time by witnessing to them. That is team ministry.
Nothing stirs hearts like the sight of the flags of 18 countries carried by people in the traditional dress of those countries.  We heard over and over again how touched members of the congregation were to see people who serve in various areas carrying the flags.  As with any production, a flag parade does not happen by accident.  Kappy Bickel recruits flag bearers, including alternates, so that in emergencies there is still a carrier for all the flags.  She also irons the flags and the costumes.  She and Noel Morago help the participants to be as authentic in dress as possible.  They are back stage to give each participant his or her cue.  The flags, poles, and costumes are carefully stored for the next use.  That is team ministry.
The flag bearers themselves are here from early to late on Sunday.  This time they arrived for practice at 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon and stayed through the Twenty4/7 service that evening.  Kappy and Noel are determined those practices will begin and end on time and are always looking for ways to make the parades more effective.  That is team ministry.
Darrin Akin, Paul Mondragon, and Jorge Pantoja partnered with me to plan the music, content, and flow of the services.  Darrin and Jorge made time on Saturday afternoon to be at the practice.  Paul was on vacation, but was back for Sunday just daring the computers, microphones, and cameras to fail.  He also provided a DVD of the service for all the workers who were present.  That is team ministry.
If you have not seen the booklet we produced to tell the story of what FCC is doing around the world, they are available in the turnstile at the west end of the lobby and in the Welcome Center.  Terry Sanders, Jenny Matthews, Carole Trautman, and Darrin Akin used a plethora of hours formatting, proofreading, printing, and assembling yet another tool for world evangelization.  That is team ministry.
Alan Dyson allowed us to move the Involvement Center furniture for the weekend.  He and his wife, Kari, constantly make themselves available wherever needed.  Les and Jul Gompert provided housing for Diana Lawrence. That is team ministry.
Kevin and Karen Hershkowitz are the newest members of the Mission Ministry Team.  They planned, provided the main dish, set up, and cleaned up for the lunch on Sunday where our guests, the staff, the elders, and the Missions Ministry were fed.  The latter three groups brought salads and desserts and stayed to visit and encourage.  Once everyone had eaten, many, many in the group joined forces to clear and move tables and help tear down the booths.  The Twenty4/7 Grill Crew planned delicious, inexpensive food for our guests Saturday after service.  That is team ministry.
There are not enough superlatives and adjectives to express the appreciation I feel for this team effort.  If I have forgotten anyone, I am sorry.  I do know that God was glorified, Jesus was lifted up, the Holy Spirit was present, and our partners in ministry were encouraged.
As I looked around the café Saturday evening, I saw the Ridgleys,  Robertsons, Liles, Nixes, Linda Stanton, and Diana Lawrence visiting with and encouraging each other.  We have been intentional about making our international partners feel like they are members of the FCC family.  It was obvious we have been successful in that.  Of course, we support outstanding workers.  Where there could be competition and rivalry, there was only love and affirmation.  Now that's team ministry.

A very special thank you to three young people of FCC...
On Monday afternoon, July 13, at about 5 pm, with the temp hovering around 116, our FCC groundskeeper, Royen Springer, and his assistant, Sarah Davis, spotted a small mixed-breed dog lying in the shade of a stairwell near the south patio of the church building. They quickly alerted those of us involved in the Monday Night Calling program. It was obvious to all that the animal was in severe heat-related distress and frightened. Very gently, Sarah was able to approach the little dog and bring her inside the coolness of the cafe. At first, the little creature was too weak to drink, but with gentle, persistent coaxing she began taking in drops of cool water and eventually perked up. Later, she even helped herself to a few bites of Megan Springer's meal!
As I think back on the events of July 13, the first thing that stands out in my mind is the care, compassion, and concern shown by everyone present for this defenseless little animal. For just a few moments, the meal, the calls, and even time itself was put on hold as we watched over our "charge." Officer Brock of HSOY was attending another animal rescue emergency at the time and was, therefore, delayed in responding to our call. His initial comments regarding our "patient": "She's dehydrated and sun-bleached, but she's going to be okay...good job!"
My heartfelt thanks to Royen and Megan for staying until late evening and caring for our unexpected guest until the officer arrived, thereby enabling those of us involved in the Calling Ministry to continue with our responsibilities. Their concern, compassion, love, and service...above and beyond.  I am amazed and humbled, though not surprised. Young adults, such as Royen, Megan, and Sarah are the future of this church and our nation...we're in pretty good hands, don't you agree?
For all God's creatures...thanks, again, guys!
 - Eva Elzey (Monday Night Calling)

On behalf of all God's creatures...
Thank you for making our first-ever "Towels for Tabbies & Terriers" campaign a huge success! Because of the generous, compassionate spirit of so many here at FCC, the little animals being housed at the Humane Society of Yuma will have clean, dry bedding for months to come as well as plenty of soft, fluffy towels for bath time, good ol' towel-rags for kennel maintenance, and the list goes on!
An extra-special thank you goes to both Shanen and Cookie of HSOY for their timely advice and unending patience as we worked together throughout this eight-week campaign. Thanks to store manager, David, of the Avenue B Dairy Queen for his donation of long-handled spoons and covered straws for last Friday's party: to Karen and Lily for doing such a superb job on the display board; to our own guitar-pickin' man, Mark Daum, for providing just the right background music for us; to all of you whose support and encouragement continues to inspire and motivate; and, as always, to the best church fellowship team anywhere...thank you for your continued faithfulness in this ministry effort and for keeping me grounded!
Blessings and love to all,
Eva Elzey (FCC Fellowship Committee)
