"The wild animal had two arrows stuck in him. The hunters and the dogs pursued, hoping for the kill. The beast, in its last effort to rid itself of its foe, lashed out, killing two of the dogs and wounding a man. The chase went on."

The supervisor of our farming company has an apt metaphor to communicate when he is feeling overwhelmed by problems such as disease in a lettuce field, a bad stand due to extreme heat, or problems with the labor force. He can be heard to say at these times,  "I've got two or three 'arrows' stuck in me."  We all understand it's a time to be empathetic and extend extra grace and cooperation.

I had a week like this last month. Luanne and I had a house built and have been in the middle of moving in and having the painters and electricians do final touch ups and corrections. We were staying up until midnight trying to get boxes unpacked, a mailbox put up, etc. On the farm, things were stressful, too, with disease in the watermelon seedlings at the greenhouse. Luanne called me at work to tell me about a problem with the mailbox I'd picked out, and I lashed out at her with angry words in an angry tone. Why couldn't she just "buck up" and deal with it?  I've got my world "caving in on me." What I failed to remember was that it wasn't just the mailbox, but practically every part of her life was upside down. I hate when I "lose it" like that; when I hurt the one I love so much, when I'm obtuse about how she's feeling.  I asked God to help me, and I asked Luanne to forgive me for the way I responded.

As I pondered our situation, I was reminded of the blessings in the midst of the turmoil. For instance, what a huge relief it was to have Charlie Kosmata and his guys take a whole day with two trucks and trailers to move most of our stuff. The next day, the Kruegers and Lorie Buster showed up to help us finish loading and clean the rental we'd been living in. In the meantime, at the new house, Blanca Daum unpacked many of the boxes and put furnishings in their place. Carrie and Isidro Lopez helped us load and unpack one afternoon.

I needed to put up a fence so the dog wouldn't get out. I pulled around the back yard with the rolls of fencing in the pickup. I contemplated calling Mike Burton (we're their new neighbors) to see if he could come over and help me. Thoughts of: "He leaves for work at 4:00 am, and he's probably tired and just wants to rest," made me hesitate.  But I felt God telling me, "If you don't ask, you won't allow Me to bless you." So I dialed Mike's number. As I waited for someone to answer, Mike suddenly appeared at my side, work shirt and gloves on.  Kind of astounded, I explained that I was just trying to call him. He said he'd seen me with fencing in the truck and thought I might need a hand.

We go through hard times.  Fatigue can make cowards, or "beasts," of us all. We get so much going at times that we are overwhelmed. God can bless us with help, but we need to ask Him and make our needs known to those brothers and sisters with whom He has blessed us. The Christian life is meant to be lived in connectedness, not isolation.

From the book we're using in men's group on Wednesday mornings, Being God's Man...by Pursuing Friendships, the apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, "The eye can never say to the hand 'I don't need you.' The head can't say to the feet, 'I don't need you.'  (1 Corinthians 12:21, NLT)  His point was clear.  Stop acting as if you don't need one another. What he knew, and what we see, is that when men are "doing life" with other men who share their commitment to spiritual growth, they can sustain their momentum and achieve personal changes faster than if they attempt to go it alone. No big mystery-that's God's plan."

Brothers and sisters, thank you for blessing us.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."  Matthew 6:33

Most recently I was asked, "Should the Church tell people how to make it through the tough times we are going through?"  After thinking about it for a day, I want to respond to you by saying we should do nothing different than what we are already supposed to be  doing!

Seek Him first!  This is the time for us to be what we say we are:  "People of the Book!"  Now, more than ever, we need to be reading God's Word and practicing what it tells us!

One thing that stands out for me is tithing.  We need to continue to do as God's Word says and bring the whole tithe into the storehouse.  (Malachi 3:10)  Now is the time to test God.  Now is the time to be a tither and line yourself up for the promised blessings of God.  He challenges us to "test" Him on this.

Another thing comes to my mind:  "Do not be anxious about anything," but pray!  (Philippians 4:6)  We claim to be people of prayer, so let's spend more time on our knees in prayer, deepening our relationship with Him.  Do not worry!  Keep your eyes focused on Him and watch Him work.

These are exciting times. Be faithful, and let's watch Him work!

Because of Him,   Dan

The mayor met the principal of the toughest school in town.  The principal was obviously downcast, and the mayor asked him why.  "School's been open only a short time," the educator explained, "and already we have 39 dropouts."  "Is that so bad?" the mayor asked.  "After all, you're in the roughest section of town."  "That's the trouble," replied the principal, "38 of the 39 dropouts were teachers."

It sounds like those teachers could have used a little help!  Speaking of which...

What do the three men with the following characteristics have in common: A previous senior minister of this church with 51 years experience as a pastor; an author of over 30 books and 200 published articles, and an ex-Bible College President; a Superior Court Judge with credentials and awards too long to mention?

As it turns out, what they have in common is YOU!

They have a passion for teaching and for teachers!  They are teaming up to equip our teachers, TLC hosts, everyone who has ever taught a Bible study, and everyone who has even considered teaching a Bible study.

Alan Dyson, Involvement MinisterRecovery Conference
Alan Dyson, Involvement Minister
This weekend is the first ever Recovery Conference put on by the Living Free Recovery Center.  This event will be a time of learning, supporting, and encouraging people within our community who are involved with, or in, various recovery programs.  As a minister at FCC, I am very excited about what this conference is bringing to our church and our community.  As far as I know, there has been nothing like this before in Yuma.  One of the things that I have realized, as I learn more about recovery and addiction, is that I am beginning to understand that we can all use God-centered programs like the ones the LFRC uses.  I have often put myself in the group of not needing a program like this, because I am not addicted to alcohol or drugs.  So, what benefit could there possibly be for me?  Then I realized that my addictions are no less destructive, no less severe.  My addictions are simply more socially acceptable or less visible.  Recovery is not simply for those abusing drugs. God-centered recovery is what all those addicted to the sins of this world need.  We can all help, we can all use tools to combat our addictions, we can all use ways to help our fellow brothers and sisters out of the darkness and into the light.

I hope that we will all take advantage of this opportunity and attend this conference. Even if you just have a few minutes this weekend, come and learn.  If you have a few hours, even better.  If you have all weekend, make this a commitment.  I know that all who attend will walk away blessed and ready to work on their addictions.  Recovery is for all of us.  Come and start on your path towards freedom as I start mine.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Due to the Church Café and kitchen being unavailable for our March 7 Potluck Brunch, we have cancelled for March and have rescheduled for April 4.  Our special guests who were planning to be with us this month will, instead, join us then.  A reminder will appear in the Sunday bulletin prior to the event. Also, our Second-Half Prayer Network sign-up sheet is still available at our table in the Main Lobby on Sunday mornings.  If you are willing to say a prayer occasionally (when called upon), for someone who has a special or urgent need, please sign up.  And if you haven't yet picked up a prayer card to carry with you that lists the numbers to call to make a request, they are available as well. At the table, also, are some needs and desires listed that have been taken from the questionnaires that were recently mailed and returned. There, you may find an opportunity to serve, minister, or even enjoy some good like-minded fellowship or recreation.  There are many among us who are lonely and need someone who cares.  God wants to use and bless you through others!

The best opportunity most of us will have to reach another people group is by reaching someone who is an international student in our own country.

More than 400,000 international students now attend college in the USA.  Over 80 students from 20 countries have been identified on the AWC Campus. The world has truly come to us. Each Saturday evening and Sunday morning, for the next several weeks, there will be someone at the kiosk in the Main Lobby with information on how you and your family can be involved with welcoming an international student to the U.S.

This might very well be the only way a student gets to spend time in a home in the U. S.   Your involvement can be as little or as much as you wish-dinner in your home, a trip to the Territorial Prison, a ride to the bank in town, these are all things a student will appreciate.

We hope to find 8-10 families at FCC who will become part of a pilot program of an outreach to international students.  Claudia Garrido, a member of FCC from Chile, works in the office of International Students at AWC.  Through this contact we will match these families with interested students.  Hopefully the ministry will evolve from there.

Please read below reasons this outreach is so important:

 - These students are destined to be tomorrow's world leaders. Many times they return to high places of influence in government, education, or business.

 - Experts say seven out of ten international students will never enter an American home outside the campus community.

How sad that these students live here four or more years and never know typical Americans, or find out much about life in the United States.

Last month we set a goal of matching 8-10 students with families or individuals.  We have at least six of those matches.  Please see Betsy Brown, Claudia Garrido, or Laretta K. Shrader on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for more information.

Dates for House Building at ARM in Globe This Fall
I have been working with Diana Lawrence of ARM on dates for groups from FCC to go to Globe and build another house on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.

The dates are September 4-7, which is Labor Day Weekend, September 25-27, and October 23-25.  Other groups will work on the house in between times.  The plan is for the home to be finished that last weekend in October, and the team that is there (and any others that can come back) will get to be part of the House Blessing.  This is when the keys to the home are given to the family along with other gifts and a time of prayer and thanksgiving.

Retreat for Workers in Chile
As you read this, I will be in Chile.  The board of IberoAmerican Ministries, of which I am a member and officer, decided to bring all the workers home for a time of retooling and refreshing.  My part was to plan a day just for the women who so often serve in places that lack opportunities for fellowship with like-minded women.

I will be speaking on "Virtuous Women In My Life."   There will be time for fellowship, worship, and crafts.  Kappy Bickel and Noel Morago prepared greeting cards to be created during the craft time.

Please be praying for this entire retreat, that all the workers will go back to their respective fields refreshed and ready to serve with all their might. Please pray especially for me that I will speak the words these women need to hear.

Please don't wonder why the Missions Minister is going to Chile when there is a spending freeze here at FCC.  Because I made the commitment last year, and because I think this retreat is so important to the welfare of our IAM workers, I am using vacation time and personal funds for the trip.  I am blessed to be able to do this.

Spring Break Service Project
High Schoolers, it's time for our annual Spring break service project!  This year we will be staying in Yuma to serve local families.  It begins Sunday, March 29, and ends on Thursday, April 2.  We will be "camping out" at the church and traveling to and from our work projects each day.  The cost is $140 per person, and it covers everything needed for the week, including food.  There is only room for 30 students, so get your registrations in soon!  Reserving a spot requires a deposit of $50 and completed permission and registration forms.  The balance must be paid by March 25.  Forms and additional information are available from Jeff or from the Church Office.
