Pharma's new blockbuster drugs are antipsychotics - and Seroquel leads the pack. A $520 million blockbuster deal between AstraZeneca and the Department of Justice makes it the third historic U.S. settlement... in just fifteen months. Will fines over $4 billion decrease the illegal marketing of antipsychotics? Will psychiatrists hesitate to prescribe these drugs? Or is this simply the cost of doing business?
Tonight LIVE at 7:00 p.m. on the Philadelphia CNN-News affiliate WFMZ-TV, The American Law Journal presents "The Antipsychotic Wave: The Legal, Medical and Financial Fallout." A panel of lawyers and doctors join host and former New Jersey prosecutor Christopher Naughton, a 20-year broadcasting vetetran. "I think pharmaceutical companies... almost push their sales representatives... to contact whistleblower lawyers," says Brian McCormick of Sheller, P.C., the plaintiff's firm representing whistleblowers in each of the three largest pharma settlements in U.S. history. "When they report [wrongdoing] internally they don't get any results.... in order for them to do the right thing they have to go outside their companies." In addition to McCormick, guest appearances include Joseph Goldberg, corporate defense counsel and partner with Weber Gallagher, Joining the program for medical and therapeutic perspective are psychiatrist and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Joseph DeGiacomo and Dan Edmunds, psychotherapist and founder of the International Center for Humane Psychiatry.
